Newfoundland Berserkers Game Reactions for Day 10
Pregame coverage: Newfoundland will continue their road trip and travel to Vancouver before making their way to Quebec City. Vancouver last time out blanked them by beating them by a score of 4-0. The Zerks will be mighty hungry to avenge that defeat. While last time Quebec City and the Zerks faced off it ended in a Zerk victory, this one will be considerably trickier because the Cits will be looking to remind pundits why they were number one in the power rankings. Sadly for Newfoundland they will have two Quebec City games back to back. Best of luck to the Zerks. Game 23: Newfoundland at Vancouver The Zerks game into this game thirsting revenge and revenge they got. They shutout Vancouver on their own ice and scored two goals. They kept John St. Ark busy all night and never let him even have a sliver of hope. Good win for Newfoundland right there. Several notable performances tonight for the Zerks worth mentioning. Matty Sandeen, after not scoring a goal for nearly 20 games this season scores his second of the season just a few games after scoring his first. Sandeen also had a fantastic performance on defense and played a huge part in preventing Vancouver from having many opportunities. Pasta the Turtle bullied the Whalers tonight by racking up 3 hits while also being a big part of why Vancouver’s power play couldn’t do anything. With that let’s go to our Zerk of the Game: Hugo Gronroos who notched a shutout on 19 shot attempts. In low scoring affairs it cannot be understated just how important it is to have a goalie who can keep the goal against total low and that’s exactly what Hugo did tonight. He denied every chance the Whalers had and Vancouver fans left the arena in agonizing frustration due to his brilliant performance tonight. Congrats Hugo and what a performance! Game 24: Newfoundland at Quebec City WHAT A HUGE GAME FOR THE ZERKS. I’M BUZZING I’M BUZZING RIGHT NOW. After starting the game down 0-2 the Zerks roared back to tie it up. Goals by Aleksandrs Balcers and Leon Athanasios got us back to even. Then Quebec scored another goal in the 3rd and momentum swung back towards the Cits. Things were beginning to look dire when BILLY FREAKING BROOKS, WHO’D BEEN GREAT ON D ALL NIGHT AND EVEN HAD A FIGHT, STEPS UP AND SCORES HIS BIGGEST GOAL OF THE SEASON AND TIES IT UP 3-3 AND JUST LIKE THAT THE MOMENTUM FOR THE ZERKS IS FREAKING BACK. Shortly after Bas O’Bigbers sniped a goal that ultimately would be the game winning goal and then Ric Charlesworth sealed the deal. WHAT A FREAKING PERFORMANCE BY THE ZERKS AGAINST THE BEST TEAM IN THE SMJHL. CONGRATULATIONS! Lots of great Zerk performances in that game. All who were mentioned but let’s not forget the likes of Vaseline Podcalzone who had an apple and played good defense. Or Dwayne Gretzky who on top of his apple bullied the Cits tonight with 3 hits of his own. With that let’s go to our Zerk of the Game: Billy Brooks. Brooks was an absolute sensation out there tonight with his good defense momentum changing goal. We are so blessed to have Brooks on our team and every time he has a performance like this, the Zerks do brilliant things. Congrats Brooks! Game 25: Newfoundland at Quebec City The second game in Quebec City was a little more of a let down. Ultimately a game that couldn’t be settled in regulation or overtime, it went to a shootout were Dwayne Gretzky and Bas O’Bigbers both couldn’t find the back of the net and the Zerks lost. OTLs aren’t the end of the world but it really hurts when you feel like you could’ve won had a few more things gone our way. A lot of solid Zerk performances in a game like this. Bud Weiser, the forward who could, had massive goal that tied the game up at 3-3. Nike Kickz Jr had an insane break away were he dangled Mat Smith to open up the scoring for Newfoundland. And Dwayne Gretzky had another productive night on both ends of the buck netting 1 apple and notching 3 hits. Dwayne is no pushover. Also worth noting is that Evgeni Petrov, the rookie backup for the Zerks, was in net tonight and allowing only 3 goals against the best team in the SMJHL is no small feat and should be praised. But with that we’d like to go to our Zerk of the Game: Jesse Trudeau who scored a huge game tying 2-2 goal and had a positive +- out there on the ice. A very solid night for the guy which netted his very first Zerk of the Game award. Congrats. Postgame Coverage: With that the Zerks take 5 of 6 points and have a really solid 3 game stretch for themselves. While still not the number one team in the East they’ve closed the gap and shown that they have what it takes to keep up with the big teams in this league.
