S58 PT #4 Redesigning the Rink

It should come as no surprise to anyone that the rink needs updating. But entertainment has taken over so much of our lives, that we need to incorporate some elements that will make the masses giddy.
As such, the following should be considered: 1. If a player commits a major penalty, fans are allowed to throw any objects on the ice while the player stands at the center ice for 20 seconds 2. A second, much smaller net is to be added, inside of the main goal. If a player hits this spot, they start the next faceoff up a man. 3. A player from each team will be suspended above the ice as a 6th player. They will be parallel to the ice and will be equipped with a battering ram to knock players uncontrollably off their feet. The fans will enjoy this one. 4. If a player commits a high sticking penalty, instead of going to the box for 5 minutes, they will have to play without their skates and a tiny stick, which will be highly embarrassing. In order to appeal to the audience that wants more violence in hockey the SHL has decided to give the players a choice, they can go onto the ice with a hockey stick, or a baseball bat. If they choose the stick the standard rules apply, they use it to hit the puck and try to score, but if they pick the baseball bat they can't use it to hit the puck, they can only use it to hit other players. Teams will have to decide how many batters and how many regular skaters they will have on the ice, it takes line matching to a whole new level, when the other team puts out 3 batters you better counter with 3 of your own or risk being beaten down to a pulp. Sure injuries will be up, and concussions will be a massive concern, but it's all in good fun.

Someone perhaps has already suggested this, but one idea to make SHL more ''extreme'' is simple, there are no penalties! Anything goes! You can hit players without the puck, there is no delay of the game when you shoot the puck to the stands, you can throw dirty hits and use your stick creatively. More than five players on the ice is still against the rules or spirit of the game.
I think the idea of removing the unnecessary delays of the game that came with penalties is a great way to bring action and intensity back to the game of hockey. I mean, when you think about it, at the moment a lot of time is wasted in calling the penalties and teams playing on PP/PK, just passing around finding an opening or dumping the puck so the penalty killers can go for a line change, that is not interesting - that is terrible entertainment. When there are no ''rules'' so to speak, the game is fast and truly North/South. The fans watching will get to see a lot more hits and goals, which at the end of the day is what we all want to see when we watch hockey.

The change to the area of play or equipment to make it more "extreme" for the SHL is easy choice in my mind. In terms of SHL arenas I feel like each team will now have to pick a specific kind of sandwich to be there sponsor and have a giant fresh sandwich that they are affiliated with hanging from the top of the roof each game they play. The Calagary Dragons have already started this trend with exclusive rights to the chicken parm sandwich which was infused into the roof of their arena along with a full out chicken coop outside the stadium on top of the roof to ensure that fresh chickens can be killed to keep a fresh chicken parm hanging from the rafters each game. The Dragons stadium is even called the big parm and a lot of fans getting into the theme of chicken parms. The fresh smell of a hot of the oven chicken parm can be a big distraction for opponents not use to playing in this type of environment.

The SHL has been picked up by both major sports TV shares in Canada, Sportsnet and TSN. In order to boost the ratings they have asked to follow the lead of the UFC and add more fighting/violence to the league. So the first major rule change is if you get into a fight and win the fight only the other team gets a penalty and your team is rewarded a 5 min power play. Also they are taking out charging and high hits from the penalty list. This will open the door for the lots of the old rock-em sock-em Don Cherry hockey. Scott Stevens type hits happening game in and game out. It will open the door for enforcers again lots of fighting to keep the crows interested. We will keep the clutch and grab out of the game though as it slows the speed of the game which we don’t want to do. This should open the door for the speed of the game to continue and bring back some old time tough guy hockey as well. Here is hoping that McGregor thinks he is tough enough to try out for a team and fight on some skates.

Seeing that the SHL has now been picked up by Red Bull Media House I think it is clear what will happen. The SHL games need to happen in some sort of Red Bull Crushed Ice style of rink. Red Bull has offered to make some changes to make it resemble more of a rink than a simple downhill course like it currently is, since it would be hard for one team to skate uphill only (and to be honest - kind of unfair too). So what I came up with is a rink that is formed like a horse race track or a speed skating track. A round, oval shape, in the middle is where the benches and some party people can buy VIP tickets to great seating. The track itself features a goal on each of the shorter sides with the longer sides being full of ups and downs and a few jumps and obstacles. This will probably also get rid of icing calls because icing calls are dumb anyways.

The rink is the number one area that the SHL is going to have to change to get fan intrigue to increase and get viewership against the NHL. As a premier hockey league, the NHL has done very little to change the rink over its entire existence. So, how can the SHL change its rink in a way that makes it more extreme and more fun to watch. The answer is really simple, add slopes. By creating a small grade of downhill skating toward each goal, the pace of offensive play and forechecking will be increasingly devastating.
So, center ice will be raised about three feet above the level of each goal. The ice will be curved from that level toward each end of the ice. Players skating out of their offensive zone are going to be more likely to get crushed by a open ice forechecker. And players in on the breakaway are going to have the benefit of blazing fast speed like they have never been able to produce on your standard North American or Olympic rink. With some harder hits and more high-flying offensive action, the SHL is soon to overtake the NHL in TV viewership. Thanks Jove for my sig

Fans of the Nevada Battleborn, the SMJHL's hottest team right now, are in store for some very interesting period intermissions, especially those in the Battlezone. After seeing the massive success of the Call of Duty franchise's choice to incorporate their own "battle royale" style game mode, the Nevada Battleborn have taken a page out of the video game (and Hunger Games and literally the movie Battle Royale) book and are spicing up their downtime between periods.
30 fans throughout the arena's seating sections will be randomly selected (via Bluetooth connectivity over their mobile devices through the Nevada Battleborn Fans! app) to "combat" each other in the "Battlezone" - the arena. This is done by "battling" other Chosen fans. These Chosen can approach other Chosen and, through the app, eliminate the other player. Much like Battle Royale-style games, the fan that was "approached" is the one to lose and is eliminated (but not killed outright). Throughout the arena are loot boxes, special items, armour, etc. "Honestly, fans are mostly just coming for the intermission. People come late." Rob Wright, a forward with the team, said. Rob Wright

Firstly, who said the SHL is second fiddle to the NHL? Fact check, please! Anyways, in recent years, we have seen the NHL test out 3on3 play. Nowadays, overtime is played 3on3, which has led to fast breaks going either way and plenty of exciting scoring opportunities till a goal is scored. Now, we don't just want to copy the NHL. We want to do it one better! I say we implement 3on3 play for the entire game! While we're at it, let's just throw out offsides, who cares about those anyways? My team jokes I'm a cherry picker, I'll show them! If we're getting rid of a rule, let's add one to make up for it. After all, teams might try to play more defensively in this offensive format by icing 2 or even 3 defensemen at a time. Nope! You are only allowed to have 1 dman on the ice at a time. This format should result in more scoring opportunities, defensive breakdowns, goals, pissed off goalies, and probably even injuries! All the while, the fans will love it! I look forward to next season when this will definitely be implemented.

Cable networks have picked up the SHL for syndication, however the SHL had to agree to make the area of play or equipment more "extreme". The SHL heads talked about the sport and did some research and realized many things about the fans who would watch this product. Fans love watching goals and fights, higher the score, the more entertaining the product is. Due to this revelation, the SHL has added the following rule: winning a fight = 1 goal. Goons now have a place in this league, and now teams will have to prioritize if they want to score goals, or win fights. Will a team build full goons and enforcers and try to win the SHL cup this way or will teams still try to play traditionally and win by scoring more goals. Of course, if the opposing team never drops the gloves then there is never a fight and goals will win the game, but what if it's two full teams of goons/enforcers, is it literally the last man standing wins? Come find out!

One of the changes we should make is the glass/boards is now rubber and bouncing off it will have hilarious results. I can just imagine all the flopping bodies and mangled limbs from guys bouncing into the boards and being launched back onto the ice like super balls they used to sell in those twenty-five cent machines. Also, just like in the extreme football league, no more opening face off. You gotta run (skate) towards the pick and wrestle with some other poor center for the privilege of claiming that little piece of rubber. Also pucks now explode when goals are scored. And since the technology is still new, the puck will randomly explode because who does not love a random firework show that will horribly disfigured your favorite player? I see nothing that could go wrong in this scenario. Heck, you do not like a guy? Chuck the puck at him and see if it goes off. That’s not murder or anything, right?

The change would be that the ice surface would be made smaller, and the players on the ice would be smaller. It will be a limited whistles three skaters vs three skaters with one goalie in net for each. The surface would be much smaller and oval shaped making it for non-stop action. No more dumb whistles for offsides or icings. Non-stop action. It will be goals galore and in-tight plays with some physical play. It will resemble a gauntlet type game. It is going to be excited to watch which is what TV Networks are looking for these days, quick, exciting action. In addition, equipment will be slimer especially for the goalies to allow for more high offense, but also more pain. This type of hockey is what the future of hockey should be, not this boring defensive crap. RUN AND GUN HOCKEY LIKE THE GOOD OLE DAYS AND ROCK 'EM SOCK EM HOCKEY BOYS. The high scoring will also lead to some new records and stuff but in the long run it will be worth it cause SHL hockey will be must see television.

We need to get Fox to do some more ridiculous shit with their broadcasts like they've tried before. Think glowing puck, motion trail, all that ridiculous stuff. At least it will get people writing about the SHL. More ridiculous shit could be changing the ice colour to black and changing the puck colour to white. Also, we can make both teams wear the same jersey colour. That kind of change will really show you which teams really know their teammates well.
To do even more, we need to remove any kind of penalty or suspension for fighting. Being able to punch the shit out of literally anyone you want on the ice at any time will make the SHL a way more interesting and more extreme version of hockey compared to the boring NHL. You could get rid of all penalties that aren't stick related if you really wanted to.
