Mats Marner Statement on His Upcoming Free Agent Status for S60 Offseason (x2 media)
While it’s a bit early for free agent talks as the SHL season fifty nine playoffs are just got started this week with the first round of the playoffs and the second starting on Saturday I thought I would take advantage of the double media especially since I lost out on my casino parlay this season haha. I also wanted to make Marner’s intentions clear heading into the offseason especially with the San Francisco Pride being recently eliminated in six games after a hard fought series against the Seattle Argonauts. Before getting into what Marner is looking for in his next contract here is a little background on what led up to the Marner trade at the deadline and what went on behind the scenes.

The season fifty nine trade deadline was quite a shocking moment for Mats Marner after being traded from the Calgary Dragons to the San Francisco Pride on his birthday. At that point Marner had played his entire SHL career with the Calgary Dragons and many thought that he would be a life long Dragon. While the sudden last minute trade was some what surprising on the outside of things, internally with in Dragons management and with Marner it was not as much. There had been talks between general manager Mike Izzy and Mats Marner with contract negotiations through out the season fifty nine off season and into the regular season. After five straight early round exists from the playoffs since being drafted in season fifty four, Marner had made his intentions clear with Dragons management that he was wanting to see some playoff success before he would sign his next contract with Calgary.

As mentioned to my teammates in Calgary before Marner’s departure, the Dragons have had some great teams the last few seasons. Marner has had career years in season fifty eight and fifty nine with the team and am confident in the Dragons chances as a contender every year. However as good as Calgary has been on paper and in the regular season, I felt they were a bit behind the Hamilton's, Buffalo’s Chicago’s, Toronto’s, and Texas’s of the SHL world. So I expressed the idea of potentially leaving the Dragons if we were not able to have some playoff success in season fifty nine. In addition there are some rumors that close friend and brother Boris Poroshenko who was Marner’s teammate in Calgary (who has spent the past couple season battling regression) was also looking to make a cup run before retiring in the three or so seasons. With this information, Izzy being the prepared and forward looking general manager knew this situation was putting the Calgary Dragons in a tough spot because there was an inherent risk that Poroshenko and Marner would not re-sign and Calgary would lose us for nothing if things did not work out in the playoffs. So Izzy asked me if I would be willing to waive my no trade clause because Marner could get a large return on the open market and I agreed that I would to whatever deal he felt would help the team. After having these conversations early into the season and to Marner’s knowledge any news of an imminent trade no where near fruition Marner was focused on giving it his all for the Dragons through out the regular season.

While there were uncertainties in a contract year, with the way things were going for the Calgary Dragons in the regular season having pretty impressive showing night in and night out Marner assumed that the team would take the gamble and see if they could have some post season success to show Marner they could be a Challenge Cup contender. However, Marner was quite wrong with this assumption of the trade rumblings being quite as things were about to get exciting. On the trade deadline day with less than twelve hours to go Marner received a call from general manager Mike Izzy who informed him that he was in talks with the San Francisco Pride and wanted to trade Marner to a rebuilding young promising team. To be honest before the trade, Marner really never envisioned himself playing for a team that was just beginning to come out of a rebuild but wanted to comply with what ever plans Izzy had so he waived his no trade clause and gave the Pride a chance and see if it could be a place Marner could play long term. Ultimately, I enjoyed my time in Calgary and made a lot of meaningful friendship with some amazing guys in the locker room. It was a pleasure to be a part of the Dragons organization and really wish them the best these playoffs and into the future! The Calgary Dragons will always have a special place in my heart!

Turning the page and heading to San Francisco with about fifteen games left in the regular season Marner came in with the mind set of one hundred percent embracing the Pride this season and giving them full consideration about envisioning a future fit with the team. It took a lot of guts to go out and seek a trade for Marner without a contract extension and then to doubling down and protecting Marner for the expansion draft without a contract extension yet either even after I made it clear that I did not see myself signing a contract before free agency. A major reason for this was because there are going to be a lot of moving pieces this offseason and wanted to see how things play out team success wise and how the SHL landscape changes. It really goes to show the kind of promise and potential San Francisco sees in Mats Marner that they did not want to give up the chance they have in keeping Marner long term which would not be possible if he were taken in the expansion team draft.

While the trade to San Francisco was quite surprising for me personally, I think what was even more exciting was the amazing first impression the San Francisco franchise has provided Marner since day one of joining the team. The locker room welcomed Marner with open arms and everyone in the organization has been an absolute class act. There is a great mix of more experinced user recreates and first gen players that I have had the privilege of getting to know over the past couple of weeks. Overall the Pride’s locker room is a positive, easy going lively room with a lot of great people to chat with. In addition, on the ice Marner was able to fit right it with the Pride’s top line playing along side two SHL superstars with Henrik Lekberg Osterman and Sven Svenson going on to average a point a game with the short time with team. While Marner missed out on some games played due to the trade, he was on pace to finish with a career high fifty nine points if he were to play the full sixty six games. In the season fifty nine post season Marner was able to rack up four points in a tough fought six game series against the Seattle Argonouts in which the Pride were able to show their young promise against a more experienced and veteran team.

After experiencing a bit of the season with the Pride and talking with their team management they quickly became one of the front runners where Marner would sign his next contract with. Having done my due diligence with the team it seems like Marner’s fits perfectly with the Pride’s team developmental time line with their young core of season fifty five, fifty six, fifty seven and fifty eight players that would be nearing their prime when Marner will be around a two thousand tpe player. In addition, an offensively dynamic player such as Marner seems to be exactly what the Pride are looking for and what Marner brings to the table build wise has fit in really well with San Francisco so far. While I do not see the San Francisco Pride being a team that will be able to compete for a cup until season sixty three or season sixty four. I do believe that they have one of if not the best prospect pools and young cores in the league that can grow around Marner while being a top point producing player. On top of this they are much farther along in the rebuild process then other teams with this kind of young core as they have made the playoffs for two straight seasons and taken a really good Toronto North Stars team to seven games in season fifty eight and a pretty deep Seattle Argonauts team to game six with a couple close one goal losses. With that being said if Marner does not sign with an immediate cup contender in the upcoming free agency I am pretty much one hundred percent sure that I would return to the Pride at this moment in time.

This now brings me to my next point of where I wanted to notify other general managers in advance that I will be considering signing with immediate cup contending teams. Before being traded away from the Calgary Dragons my brother (Boris Poroshenko) and I talked about being a package deal to Dragons management whether it was during initial talks of resigning and if not now in free agency with the fact that the Dragons traded Marner away. In short, I am pretty sure my brother and I have the longest cup drought out of any current active member in SHL history after never winning a Challenge cup since joining the SHL back in January 2012 and that we are hoping to break the drought before Poroshenko retires. I look forward to hearing pitches from general managers about why their team is best set up to win a Challenge Cup in the next couple seasons. I can only speak for myself right now but at the end of the day I would like to take the minimum five million contract over three seasons and do not really mind where you play Marner as I want to do what ever is best to help a championship contender’s chances of helping finally win that first illustrious Challenge Cup.

Finally I thought I would help out championship contending teams with sparing them some time with digging into Mats Manrer by providing you what Marner can bring to the table for your team:

1. Elite work ethic
When I commit to something, I always stick through it and give it my all. I think the past six seasons since coming back to the SHL have shown exactly that. Having returned to the SHL in season fifty four after having my passion for the league reignited I intended to be one of the hardest working members in my draft class as I aspire to once again have a hall of fame career like I did with my last player. Even though I had a late start to my SMJHL career joining a week into the regular season of the SMJHL I have not missed a point task since being drafted into the SHL and have always found ways to gain extra tpe like working hard to achieve the mpt+ to catch up in my draft class. Being in the top ten for my draft class in terms of tpe and over 1400tpe with an expected growth rate of being over 1500tpe by the start of the season sixty regular season I can promise you I will be one of the fastest earning players on your team.

2. A Developed Player Who Could Be The Best Third Liners in the League or A reliable Top Six Forward
If you look at Marner’s player build right now you probably will see that it is extremely focused on offensive and athletic attributes. I plan to round out my defensive stats and get my stick checking and positioning to fifteen this offseason along with my checking and defensive read to seventeen which I would need one hundred and twenty four tpe overall to do. If you look at my last off season build update I was able to acquire one hundred and twenty eight tpe last season between the playoffs and off season (April fifth update post). With this future off season update I feel like Marner will become a lot more of a well rounded player who can be defensively responsible while continuing to be a major offensive threat that would work well either in a depth role on an extremely deep forward group or a reliable top six forward who will create more scoring chance they he gives up. The best part is Marner is still four season away from regression and will only continue to improve his abilities each week in hopes of becoming a two thousand tpe player.

3. Having a long term contract so that I can provide value to the team
As a player that will be under 1500tpe when I sign my contract this offseason, I will be able to provide a team great value with a five million dollar contract over three years as once the regular season starts for season sixty I expect to be over that contract cap threshold and then should be around 1700tpe by year two of the contract and 1900tpe in year three of the deal. So with those circumstances you will have Marner at one level under the salary cap threshold for most of the contract which will save your team some money.

4. Positive active influence in the locker room
I am a pretty laid back easy going person and love to talk sports being a huge hockey fan (diehard leafs fan) and played football for a long time (I am going to be helping out at the University of Ottawa Football team as graduate student assistant with in season video scouting/game prep in the fall) and am a big colts fan. I like to be a vocal person in the locker room, build connection and be a positive influence for my teammates anyway possible whether it be recognizing the stellar play of my teammates, cheering on the team during the live sims, chatting about life or just shooting the shit and having some laughs. I have never really had any problems with anyone on the site and am open to building new friendships with new teammates in the SHL.

Anyways that is it for now. I look forward to chatting with some teams once the free agency period opens more one on one and hope this helped give you a little bit of background info into Mats Marner. And finally good luck to the remaining SHL teams who are battling it out in the second round of the playoffs Cheers

Marner has been an incredible teammate to have in SFP. Whatever team lands him and Boris will be lucky, I'm hopeful it's SFP!

Is it really that depressing that someone wants to win a cup? If it’s depressing because you aren’t a cup contender..... do better?

Like what do people want from the GL teams. You want us to just... stop drafting? Stop making trades and signing people? Idk what any of us have done wrong here. Nobody has cheated their way to success (in recent memory). We’re just doing our jobs and doing everything we can to keep an edge over our divisional competition. Look at Toronto. They didn’t make the fucking playoffs lol. You think Hamilton, Chicago, or Buffalo wants that fate??

The only right thing would be an agreement where HAM CHI and BUF stops trading, drafting AND only sign IAs once the active players current contracts ends.

I don't think these things are mutually exclusive like you're making it out to be. Nobody is saying the GL teams are doing anything wrong. Or that people are doing something wrong with wanting to win.

It is depressing to be on a team where you can draft well, trade well, and ultimately those people leave before they can even make a real impact on your team to become a cup contender because you weren't a contender before them. Looking at this example, a S54 is 5 seasons into their career, nowhere near peak, and saying it hasn't been good enough, they want to be on a contender. That's disheartening.

It isn't that you've done anything wrong. Congratulations, you won the fuckin lottery basically and are a contending team at the right time that then everyone wants to join you because having to work for it isn't good enough. And for us on the outside, we keep working for it, and falling short because of a self fulfilling prophecy.

You've built a great team, you're rewarded for it. So have others, but without the reward. They can be upset about it and not be saying you're an asshole for having success or that you need to change what you're doing. They can just be upset without comment.

An old man's dream ended. A young man's vision of the future opened wide. Young men have visions, old men have dreams. But the place for old men to dream is beside the fire.
