The Anchorage Armada had 5 picks in the S59 SMJHL Entry Draft. Of those 5 picks, only 3 players are still on the roster: Mikhail Novikov, LaTrell McDonald, and Benjamin Jansson. Two of the players: Toejam Picker and Dustin Alexander failed to make the Armada's roster this season.
Mikhail Novikov, drafted 20th overall and with the Armada's first selection in the S59 draft, had a relatively good season for a rookie, but wasn't a standout on a solid Armada team. Novikov managed 26 points in a limited amount of ice time, averaging only 12:26 in the bottom six. Novikov was a great pickup by the Armada and was a very useful depth piece to help support the stacked top line. In terms of driving possession, Novikov wasn't the greatest on the team at it, but was still above average compared to the rest of the league. The Armada generated 4.4% more Corsi For when Novikov wasn't on the ice as compared to when he was on the ice, but this team is so top heavy, I wouldn't read too much into that. LaTrell McDonald, the steal of the draft, was drafted 32nd overall by the Anchorage Armada in the S59 draft. McDonald, who is in contention for the Rookie of the Year award, had a great rookie season on this Armada team. Collecting 38 points on the second line, McDonald feasted off not facing the best competition, since Anchorage's first line drew all the attention. Also providing value in the defensive end of the ice, McDonald was a +28, the best on the team. If you're not a believer in +/- (which I am not), McDonald had a Corsi For % of 62%, which is tied for 2nd best on the Armada. Being one of the best possession drivers on a team as a rookie goes to show how special of a talent LaTrell McDonald is. Look for McDonald to continue the great form into next season. Kid is special. Benjamin Jansson was drafted 33rd overall in the S59 draft, right after LaTrell McDonald. Jansson wasn't able to be as valuable to the Armada as McDonald was, but that doesn't mean he wasn't valuable to the team. Jansson was a pure 5v5 player for the Armada and managed to score 17 points on the 4th line, which is relatively good for a depth piece. In terms of advanced analytics, Jansson was the worst player on the Armada. He was the only average possession player on the team with a Corsi For % of 50.2%. The Armada also averaged 11.2% more shots when Jansson was off the ice compared to when they were on the ice. Willie Macdougal was a late season pickup for the Armada and instantly filled in as the backup goaltender. In a small sample size, Macdougal was great for the Armada, going 9-1-2 down the stretch. Macdougal saved 90.8% of the shots they faced, which isn't anything crazy, but it was enough for an elite offensive team like the Armada. The sample size was small, but Macdougal has better stats than the starter for Anchorage, Guy Fieri. @dmills3 GRADED! +5 TPE |
