SMJHL S60 Playoff Breakdown
#1
(This post was last modified: 07-31-2021, 04:15 PM by Aleris.)

One playoff round in the books, on to Round 2. Now lets dive into the pairings and predictions!

Newfoundland Berserkers Berserkers vs Timber Maine Timber

Maine upset Anaheim, and their prize. A ticket to pain against their division rival Newfoundland. Newfoundland is coming off a record point season in the SMJHL. They only lost 10 of 66 games. They really put together an all-around team effort all season. Maine has proven themselves to be on the upswing though, including a solid win against the Berserkers about 3/4 of the way through the season. Maine has a lot to be happy about beating Anaheim in the playoffs. Will they beat Newfoundland? No. Will we see them go deep next year and the year after? Very likely. Prediction: Berserkers in 5.

Vancouver Whalers Whalers vs Scarecrows St. Louis Scarecrows

I honestly expect the St. Louis/Detroit series to be closer, but the Scarecrows broke out the brooms and swept the Falcons. St. Louis finished just two games below .500 on the season, but they aren't a team that Vancouver can overlook. They have the best goal differential among bottom half teams showing that they are not an easy team to beat. However, Vancouver is surging. The hottest team coming into the playoffs having snatched the North West from Anchorage in the final stretch. St. Louis is going to put up a fight, but I see Whalers in 5.

Carolina Kraken  Kraken vs Citadelles Quebec City Citadelles

Quebec City easily handled Kelowna in Round 1. This match-up is the closest one of Round 2. Both teams finished within 2 points of the each other. Carolina is a very good team. Winning the South East division without too much trouble and finishing 6th in the league. Quebec City can't be overlooked. Yeah, they finished 2nd in the North East, but having Newfoundland in your division is tough. These teams are about as evenly matched as it gets with the season series tied 3-3. Its even hard to pull these two teams apart looking at goals scored and goals against through the season, both stats being within 15 of each other. This series will be close. Quebec City in 7.

Colorado Raptors Raptors vs Armada Anchorage Armada

Anchorage easily beat Nevada in Round 1. Not to anyone's surprise. But despite being 3rd overall in the league, Anchorage has cooled off a little since the start of the season. Losing the North West division at the last moment to Vancouver must sting and it'll either light a fire to prove themselves in the playoffs or haunt them. This series may be the one to show it. Colorado is almost opposite Anchorage. They caught fire at the end of the season and overtook a declining Anaheim for the South West title. It shows in the head-to-head match up on the season. Anchorage won the first 3 meetings, Colorado won the last 3. Can Colorado keep there momentum up against Anchorage? We will have to see. This has potential to be the best series of the playoffs. Armada wins it in 7

That's it for Round 2 predictions and analysis. Am I right? Am I wrong? Am I just a stinky Ram who hates the other South West teams? Let me know!
