It’s the most wonderful time of the year (for prospects)! Talk about an exciting draft, this “Reddit” draft was loaded with talent from top to bottom, both across new players and recreates. This Deep Dive will look specifically at the top 5 players that were taken and some of the key areas that would shows them having the potential to be stars.
Here is what the first round looked like for the draft. The Picks: 1 - Jesper Aittokallio - @JayWhy - Maine 2 - Paul Koivu - @Briedaqueduc - Anchorage 3 - Ben Jammin - @James Truong - Kelowna 4 - Sconnie McHits - @G2019 - Anaheim 5 - Mikko Rashford - @RashfordU - Newfoundland 6 - Viktor Krunk - @Crunk - Maine 7 - Jaeger Jones - @Thunder39 - Regina 8 - Viktor Anderson - @Vik - St. Louis 9 - Ka Chow - @Toxic - Carolina 10 - Vin Bangsa-Wamy - @Philliesphan96 - Colorado 11 - Tommy Tightpants - @tommytightpants - Newfoundland 12 - Vasily Arkhangelsky - @Michiganonymous - Detroit 13 - Spack Jarrow - @High Stick King - Anchorage 14 - Aksel Fiske - @mer - Quebec City Your Top Five Players 1st Overall: Jesper Aittokallio @JayWhy - Maine Timber Nation: Finland Player: Recreate Current TPE: 230 Bank: $103M Current Contract: $1M What isn’t there to love about Aittokallio? With history back to the start of the SHL (yeah, that far back). Aittokallio brings more experience than any other player in this draft. Already with a popping 230 TPE, Aitto is well on their way to leading this draft class in TPE and being a contributor from the get-go. Maine got themselves an absolute gem, and Aittokallio should reward them handsomely. With Aittokallio not hurting for any cash, Maine was able to pay them league min which should free up some cash to use as needed 2nd Overall: Paul Koivu @Briedaqueduc - Anchorage Armada Nation: Canada Player: Recreate Current TPE: 226 Bank: $39M Current Contract: $1M Koivu, another recreate with a solid history in the league was second off the board. Currently with a whopping 226 TPE, this Winger also took league minimum and does not appear to be hurting for cash. Koivu has started with a very well rounded build and it should be exciting to see how they develop their skater over the seasons. The Armada should be very excited. 3rd Overall: Ben Jammin @James Truong - Kelowna Knights Nation: Canada Player: Recreate Current TPE: 226 Bank: $68M Current Contract: $1M The Knights grabbed exactly who they wanted at 3, a very solid defender with a great well rounded game and physical stats. Jammin, a recreate, has everything a GM could want. Experience, solid bank account, and the willingness to take a league min contract to help the rest of the team out. Just like the first two picks, Jammin should reward their GM and be a very consistent producer in their time in the SMJHL. 4th Overall: Sconnie McHits @G2019 - Anaheim Outlaws Nation: Unassigned Player: New Current TPE: 224 Bank: $6.5M Current Contract: $2M The First new player off the board, McHits is already showing many reasons as to why they were selected early by Anaheim. Already at the top of the pile in Experience Earned, McHits also has a healthy bank balance and appears to be quite active. This Left Winger playmaker should be in the running for rookie of the year on a very fresh Anaheim team, expect them to continue maxing their TPE all season long. 5th Overall: Mikko Rashford @RashfordU - Newfoundland Berserkers Nation: Finland Player: New Current TPE: 225 Bank: $19M Current Contract: $1M Our second new player off the board, Rashford has come flying out of the gates. This offensively gifted, but defensively responsible defensemen already has a healthy bank balance that should cover them for the entire season. As well, they were able to take league minimum to ensure that their GM had some roster flexibility. Look to see Rashford do whatever they can to get the Zerk Squad deep into the playoffs chasing another 4 Star Cup Win.
