Deep Dive #1 - The Rookies of the Regina Elk
The Regina Elk are making its SMJHL debut this season and while with the expansion draft they were able to add some older players to their team, they still will have to rely on their newly drafted rookies to help building the franchise from the ground up. It's time to look into the 10 drafted prospects of the Regina Elk.
Centers:
Jaeger Jones - From Berlin, Germany we meet the first ever draft pick in the history of the franchise. Jaeger Jones is a player with no big weaknesses in his game, he can do a bit of everything. This makes him a player with a lot of versatility where the team can build around, or he can build himself around the team. The choices are limitless with Jaeger.
Gordie Goodenough - From Calgary, Canada, we meet the second center drafted by the Elk. Gordie is a player who really will be good enough to help the Elk reach their next levels. He is a player that reads the situation on both ends of the game and knows how to position himself accordingly. His face off skills are almost a guarantee for puck possesion, a real valuable asset to have on your team.
Wingers:
Maximum Wright - From Edmonton, Canada, we have Maximus Wright, one of the most accurate shooters in the draft. With an accuracy of 15 he is bound to light up the lamp multiple times this season. While he might be a bit worse defensively, he hopes to bring some spectacle to Regina, as offensive is the best defense someone can play.
Yannick Svoboda - From Ostrava, Czech Republic, we have our second European skater. Svoboda is part of the new young Czech movement that joined our league in the last draft. He is also a fairly balanced build skater, but mostly known for his defensive and physical ratings. A player that will be usefull in both ends of the game.
Kentaro Kikuchi - From Sapporo, Japan, we have Kentaro Kikuchi, another player with a deadly accurate shot like Wright. With these two as our future right wings we are bound to score a lot no matter what line is on the ice. Kikuchi knows how to get in that open spot on the ice to receive the puck, so once he gets in position, it's most likely too late for our opponents.
Defense:
Finn McNast - From Las Vegas, United States. Finn is a versatile defenseman, who can do almost anything. With a balanced build like his he can be shaped in every type of defenseman that the team would like to see. It will be interesting to follow his progression throughout the seasons to come to see what road he will pick.
Theo Berglund - From Stockholm, Sweden, we have another just as versatile defenseman, another real balanced player with lots of opportunities to grow once they get older. His strong points are his passing, strength and stamina, so look for him to play an important role in Regina's future.
Titanus Mosura - From Tokyo, Japan, we have... a moth? A 6'8 moth monster, well that is something i didn't expect seeing on the ice. Titanus Mosura follows the tradition of the Elk defenseman being versatile in their builds, with three defenseman all being real balanced, it will be up to them to make builds that will complement eachother, but seeing this moth on the ice, will sure drive some opposing forwards in the corner out of fear.
Goaltenders:
Rebecca Montagne - From Paris, France, we have Rebecca Montagne, the starting goaltender for the Regina Elk. In a draft full of goaltenders she was lucky enough to be the first goalie selected and ending up on a franchise that needed a starter. While she is only 5'9, she has lightning like reflexes and excellent positioning. Look for her to be the last line of protection for Regina in the upcoming years.
Conner McLavish - From the United States, we have Conner McLavish as the backup goaltender, he is a better skating/passing and pokechecking goaltender compared to Montagne, but worse in the primary attributes. So far he hasn't checked in to do any further training, so he might not be a goalie they want to rely on a lot for the future seasons.
Hope you liked this deep dive into the drafted prospects of the Regina Elk.
