Growing up in Sweden, Gunnar had a lot of talented players to look up to, but once he got to North America, one player he definitely looked up to was Ola Wagstrom. Gunnar is three seasons behind him, so by the time Gunnar got called up, Wagstrom was really hitting his stride and was basically the top fantasy asset at the time as well.

Quote:Your task: Reflect back on the infancy of your SHL and SMJHL career. What players did you look up to? What players did you want to emulate and maybe model your game after? If there were none, you can likely find a way to express that in 25 words as well.

Immediately when I joined the league I looked toward the most successful defender in SHL history for inspiration: Alonzo Garbonzo, who has won an infinite amount of individual awards as a Dman. I wanted to emulate their success, and have managed to do so in one season and one season only.

I don't remember how to spell his name. Aitketallo or something like that. The name he still uses for his players. It was @JayWhy 's first player I think. He was a goalie and was always winning awards and was like 1700 TPE (which was a shitload back in the day). Always looked up to JY and his player.

In my rookie season, I really looked up to my Petrov siblings. I think that one that really inspired me was Boris Petrov. I had never seen anyone that punched as hard as him. In my sophomore season, I definitely did not look up to Golden Face @Dewalt27. He was, and still is, a horrible role model.

I looked up to Gunnar Soderbeg. Just look at that lettuce. First thing I spent my salary on was flying his hairstylist down to Las Vegas to do my hair.

One of the first players to welcome me to Colorado as Vandy was @hhh81 so I've always kind of looked up to them as a role model for how to be in the league. He's never steered me wrong and has become a great friend to me.

When Riko Muerto joined the league in S14, there was only one player he knew much about. But that player was legendary Dragons Hall of Famer Kain Webb, and I modeled my approach to the game after his amazing example.

Looking back at my career, Sato definitely was inspired by Sven Yxskaft to start when he entered the J, and then from there on he looked at the best of the best like Hugh Jazz and Keith Lee. Whoever's up there, you know Sato wanted to be there.

There wasn't anyone really, not in terms of player build or anything like that. But I do remember mentioning in a media piece that Maurice Picard wanted to be a mainstay for Britain in IIHF like Randy Randleman or something like that.

It was hard to look up to someone, because my player was and still is a defender. There wasn't many good defenders. I definitely looked up to Ola Wagstrom when I played in SMJHL, because he was just so damn good and dominant. He dominated league multiple seasons in a row in points, in MVP trophies and TPE. Just insane!

Someone that Bjorn Viggosson looks up to immensely is Hall of Fame forward Mike Izzy. Bjorn hopes to one day eclipse that rugged winger's hitting record.

RIP Dangel. See you on the other side, brother

The main inspiration for me when I started was my current teammate Angus McFife XVII. Incredibly well rounded player and an absolute wonderful character off the ice. If I can get close to that in my career, I know I am going to win the cup. Just like him

Starting in S5, there were some legendary names for sure, but being drafted by Minnesota, the obvious choice as a forward was to try to emulate Brodie Witzel.

Considering I created this player as my first player's kid (regardless of it makes sense or not, it's a fake hockey league after all), I would say his hero growing up was Russian legend Maria Maximova (because she only performed in the IIHF). He plays a very similar style as an offensive defenseman so it goes well with the narrative.

The best SHL center in my opinion that I wanted Mikhail Novikov to emulate was the one, the only, Sven Karlsson. Legendary center throughout his entire career with primarily the Renegades and Panthers.
