[2x Draft Media] 2nd Annual Draft Winners and Losers
#1
(This post was last modified: 10-26-2021, 11:28 AM by DarkCanuck29.)

As is mandated by Hockey Journalist Law and readers like you, it is time for the Second Annual Draft Winners and Losers as decided by the entirely unqualified and completely biased DarkCanuck29.  Let’s dive right in.

WINNERS
These teams managed to just get it right. Whether it be quantity, quality or, in some cases both, these teams look poised to pull some real talent out of this draft.

1. Winnipeg Aurora  Aurora

2OA Mikko Rashford
4OA Spack Jarrow
5OA Jay O’Neil
11OA Jaeger Jones
12OA Tommy Tightpants
14OA Christian Kinsinger
16OA Rebecca Montagne
41OA Frederico Von Schnicktenburg
51OA Trevor Malone
54OA Jacques Lilcoque

Ten picks. TEN PICKS. Seven first rounders. You have to think that they hit on at least some of these. Mikko Rashford was the consensus 2nd pick in the draft and projects to be a defensive beast going forwards. Spack Jarrow and Jay O’Neil interviewed very well and were high on several team’s lists. Tommy Tightpants might be the best name in the draft. Christian Kinsinger may be a fairly quiet player, but is extremely determined and hugely competitive. Rebecca Montagne is the best goaltender in the draft. For the first time in a long time, Winnipeg’s future looks bright.

Dark’s Draft Grade: A+

2. Manhattan Rage  Rage

1OA Askel Fiske
8OA Paul Koivu
15OA Jeff Larsson
21OA Vasily Arkhangelsky
22OA Ignaz Pleyel
24OA Brady Bertrand
34OA Vin Bangsa-Wamy
35OA Velky Muz
42OA Vincent Catalano
58OA Rodrigo Rivic
62OA Jesper Aittokallio

Not to be outdone by Winnipeg, Manhattan selected eleven players in this draft, however, only three of those in the first round. They gave up Jack Klompus to grab the 8th overall selection, keeping things interesting on the draft floor. They managed to snag some huge names, including Askel Fiske at 1OA. Jeff Larsson at 15th overall has the potential to be a genius selection. They took some risk in the later rounds, but the risk is offset with a second strong draft in a row.

Dark’s Draft Grade: A+

3. Montreal Patriots  Patriotes

6OA Zayne Dangle
7OA Ben Jammin
18OA Brick Wall
32OA Marek Skoda
33OA Malach Skoda
43OA Connor O’Byrne
47OA Vadim Askerov
50OA Alicia Melchiott

Another team with three first round selections, they hit strong on at least two of them, picking up future star Zayne Dangle and a potentially elite goalie in Brick Wall. They also selected the walking Pepe meme Ben Jammin before pick 69 as he so desperately wanted, so Ill dock points for that. Grabbing the Skoda Sibblings in the second round is a fantastic piece of business and should help solidify the teams prospect depth. In a classy move, the team used their last selection on Alicia Melchiott, ensuring the legacy of user Emiko lives on.

Dark’s Draft Grade: A-

Honourable Mention. Calgary Dragons  Dragons

13OA Eddie Creller

While only selecting the one player this draft, Calgary hit on their selection, bringing in third generation Dragon Eddie Creller. Creller will fit into this group very nicely and fills the hole in the prospect depth left by the departure of Gerry Atrick. Calgary continues its march back to the pinnacle of the sport.

LOSERS
These teams somehow managed to do it noticeably worse than everyone else. Whether by not selecting a single person, or by drafting cotton drying products, these teams will have to up their game in the future.

1. Toronto North Stars  Stars

40OA. Lonely Stagan

LONELY Stagan is right. Toronto continues its protest against prospects and follows a draft where the selected zero times with a draft where they selected once, at the very end of the second round. Once again Toronto continues its quest to win now, despite not winning now, once again living up to the Toronto sports franchise tradition of losing in the first round. Hopefully for the North Stars, Stagan can exceed expectations.

Dark’s Draft Grade: F

2. New Orleans Spectres  Specters

NO PICKS

Deciding that Toronto was the franchise to emulate, New Orleans decided against selecting anyone this year, content to stay with their current prospect group. This is an odd choice for a team that missed the playoffs this year, but as with Toronto the year before, you cannot whiff on a pick if you don’t make a pick.

Dark’s Draft Grade: F-

3. Baltimore Platoon  Platoon

60OA Alexej Komarek

Baltimore may be a team in the so called Top 4, but they didn’t break through to the finals this year and they left the draft with only one prospect, picking at the very end of the third round. Their focus is entirely on winning now, however, we will see if it is a mistake to be ignoring the future.

Dark’s Draft Grade: F+

Dishonourable Mention: Edmonton Blizzard  Blizzard

10OA Shoyo Hinata
45OA Pope Cowsi
48OA Tukka Pack
57OA SD Core

It may appear on the surface that Edmonton had an okay draft. While there is nothing particularly objectionable about the players drafted by Edmonton individually, it was Edmonton making the picks. Those poor prospects will be ruined and forced to ply their trade for a franchise that can only be described as never quite good enough. It is rude and ridiculous for Edmonton to hoard this many picks in one draft and use them to crush the hopes and dreams of these fine players. Sad.

Very credible grades, definitely no bias. Surface level analysis of how many picks teams had with little attention paid to the use of draft capital, while not calling out Buffalo while calling out New Orleans for essentially trading out of the draft entirely from the top definitely raises an eyebrow.

I am a Calgary prospect. I am contractually obligated to hate Edmonton!

Zero comprehension for draft and prospect cycles in rebuilds (or sustained playoff success).

Outstanding job. A cogent and insightful analysis, straight down the middle without bias. The kind of balanced media the league could use more of in the future.
