The S62 SHL Draft was surely one for the history books, and it was a wild Sunday evening for me following along at home. I’d like to first say congratulations to all of the prospects who were drafted! I’m going to start by going through the draft pick by pick, and then take a further look at how I felt each team did. I’d also like to apologize for the delay with this article, but I started a new job recently (YAY) and this got put on the back burner. I’ll leave links to the previous rankings below, and you can find more information about how the ratings were formed in the pre-season article. Last season they nabbed the underrated Towelie with their first pick, and this season they grabbed Viktor Krunk well above his position on the GCS Rankings. The GCS system doesn’t yet incorporate whether someone has a presence in other sim leagues, and that’s something that I think played into Krunk going much higher than my rankings would have estimated. That’s something I’ll be taking a look at improving for next season. This was another solid draft for Atlanta, as they keep their prospect pool well stocked for the future. Baltimore Platoon Picks: 60 Draftees: Alexej Komarek (46) EAV: 60.0 (-14.0) RAV: 46.0 (+14.0) Baltimore made no selections in the S61 SHL Draft, and followed that up by making just one selection at the S62 SHL Draft. The pick is GM JR95’s newest player, meaning the pick itself was redundant, but Komarek is still a good prospect to bring into the organization. Hardly seems fair to judge them as they effectively made no picks in this draft. Calgary Dragons Picks: 13 Draftees: Eddie Creller (19) EAV: 13.0 (+6.0) RAV: 19.0 (-6.0) One and done for Calgary at the draft, selecting only Eddie Creller, who of course has a strong connection to the Dragons organization. Calgary had a much more active draft last season, pulling in four new prospects, but Creller has the potential to outwork all other prospects in the Dragons farm system. Chicago Syndicate Picks: 27, 46, 55 Draftees: Stephan Gill (23), Aldo Huber (40), Lord Skrolk (51) EAV: 42.7 (-4.7) RAV: 38.0 (+4.7) Unfortunately, it seems Chicago’s only prospect from the S61 draft is no longer with the organization, but on the brightside the Syndicate had a strong draft for S62. All three picks were ranked slightly higher by GCS than where they were drafted, so I feel like Chicago got great value out of their picks, and added three great personalities despite having no 1st round pick. Edmonton Blizzard Picks: 10, 45, 48, 57 Draftees: Shōyō Hinata (5), Pope Coswi (59), Tuuka Pack (68), SD Core (61) EAV: 40.0 (+8.3) RAV: 48.3 (-8.3) Shōyō Hinata at 10 is such a great pick in my opinion. Hinata was one of my top prospects going into the draft, and while I’m reluctant to call this a “steal” I think the Blizzard probably feel quite lucky to get him in the middle of round 1. For me, landing a great prospect like that takes a little pressure off the rest of your picks, and Edmonton clearly targeted players they felt a good connection with. I’m really curious to see how Edmonton’s S61 and S62 group compare in three or four seasons. Hamilton Steelhawks Picks: 20, 44 Draftees: Cup Noodle (27), Akashi SixNine Jr (30) EAV: 32.0 (-3.5) RAV: 28.5 (+3.5) Hamilton swung hard at the S61 draft, but only have one prospect left to show for it. This season they were picking much lower, and went with a couple of relatively safe picks. Cup Noodle and Akashi SixNine Jr both appear to be on the track to being regular SHLers, and they should be ready to go in a couple of seasons when the Steelhawks really need them. Hopefully this group lasts longer in Hamilton than the S61 group. Los Angeles Panthers Picks: 17, 37, 88 Draftees: Yannick Svoboda (20), Ka Chow (35), Lewis Hamiltonisblessed (62) EAV: 47.3 (-8.3) RAV: 39.0 (+8.3) LAP didn’t make any picks in S61, but they did auto-draft Tanner Fox due to being the team’s GM. I’m not sure if any of these prospects will reach Fox’s level, but the Panthers made smart picks nonetheless. Hamiltonisblessed could be a potential steal of this draft, but the Panthers will need to help him reach that potential. Yannick Svoboda and Ka Chow both should make good additions to the LAP room when they make the jump to the SHL. Manhattan Rage Picks: 1, 8, 15, 21, 22, 24, 34, 35, 42, 58, 62, 66 Draftees: Aksel Fiske (4), Paul Koivu (13), Jeff Larsson (8), Vasily Arkhangelsky (45), Ignaz Pleyel (17), Brady Bertrand (28), Vin Bangsa-Wamy (40), Velký Muž (43), Vincent Catalano (47), Rodrigo Rivic (57), Alex Kidd (53), Jesper Aittokallio (3) EAV: 29.3 (+3.0) RAV: 32.3 (-3.0) Once again the Manhattan Rage put up an absolute ton of draft capital at the S62 Draft. The group of nine draftees last season almost seems a bit small compared to this group of twelve. The high number is a bit misleading though, as it was last season, with some prospects already cut loose from the organization, but it shows the dedication and work their scouting department does regularly. Fiske, Koivu, and Larsson alone would be a tremendous haul, but the Rage continued by adding Arkhangelsky, Pleyel, and Bertrand who all appear to be headed to stardom themselves. On top of that, they added some more long-term prospects that could surprise some people in a few seasons. Minnesota Monarchs Picks: 26 Draftees: Theo Berglund (16) EAV: 26.0 (-10.0) RAV: 16.0 (+10.0) Only Theo Berglund for the Monarchs, but this is an absolute steal for Minnesota. Berglund was a bit of a late riser, but I’m still shocked GMs were sleeping on him a bit. It’s too bad they didn’t have any more picks to go with this one, but if you’re only landing one prospect it’s great to have such a talented one. I imagine a few GMs will be kicking themselves for letting Berglund slip past them at the S62 SHL Draft. Montreal Patriotes Picks: 6, 7, 18, 28, 32, 33, 43, 47, 50 Draftees: Zayne Dangle (5), Ben Jammin (8), Brick Wall (15), Gordie Goodenough (25), Marek Sköda (48), Malach Sköda (52), Connor O'Byrne (37), Vadim Askerov (32), Alicia Melchiott (~) EAV: 26.8 (+1.0) RAV: 27.8 (-1.0) Montreal had one of the best drafts, bringing in a ton of great personalities and promising future stars. Several of these prospects were being undervalued by the GCS system, and so when the dust settles on this draft group I think it will make Patriotes management look quite adept at scouting. New England Wolfpack Picks: 25, 52 Draftees: Anzelms Krastiņš (31), Skating Dino (56) EAV: 38.5 (+5.0) RAV: 43.5 (-5.0) The S61 SHL Draft does not look good in hindsight for New England, and the S62 SHL Draft already looks like a big bust for the Wolfpack. They didn’t have a 1st round pick in either draft, so you expect them to land some lower prospects, but these were two large draft classes back to back, and they appear to have dropped the ball at both drafts. Philadelphia Forge Picks: 30, 70 Draftees: Lenny Hawk (48), Rafael Boeck (44) EAV: 50.0 (-4.0) RAV: 46.0 (+4.0) Philadelphia had a great draft last season, but they also had significantly better picks to use. However, it looks like the Forge have managed to land a couple of solid prospects, and with Boeck appearing to be a bit more active again, this could be a decent looking draft for them in a few seasons. San Francisco Pride Picks: 31, 36 Draftees: Borje Samuelsson (36), Ezra Wong (50) EAV: 33.5 (+9.5) RAV: 43.0 (-9.5) Last season I had a lot of “concerns” about the Pride’s crop of prospects, and so far things don’t look great when reflecting on their S61 draft. Despite that though, I think the Pride were one of the biggest winners at the S62 SHL Draft. They made a couple of big trades to improve their team, and then used their remaining picks to land two well respected users from the community. Ezra Wong was greatly undervalued by the GCS system, because wongy is an incredibly successful user around here, and has been a locker room favourite with every team he’s been on. Speaking strictly about draft picks, I’d say the Pride had a solid outing here and appear to have landed two great recreates. Seattle Argonauts Picks: 3, 23 Draftees: Sconnie McHits (14), Wendolene Ramsbottom (7) EAV: 13.0 (-2.5) RAV: 10.5 (+2.5) Sconnie McHits was a player I specifically highlighted in the final rankings as having a good chance to be a top-5 pick despite being undervalued by the GCS system. Ramsbottom sliding into round 2 was a bit of a surprise to me, but what a fortunate turn of events for Seattle. The Argonauts had my favourite draft last season, and follow it up with another outstanding display of their scouting prowess. Texas Renegades Picks: 19, 38, 39 Draftees: Dirty Boots (20), Kentaro Kikuchi (34), Merlin Metzler (38) EAV: 32.0 (-1.3) RAV: 30.7 (+1.3) Dirty Boots was one of the friendliest prospects in the draft, so I’m sure the Renegades are thrilled to add him to their stable of future stars. Texas also landed back to back picks in the 2nd round, selecting Kikuchi and Metzler, who both bring good resumes with them to the Renegades organization. Toronto Stars Picks: 40 Draftees: Lonley Stagan (40) EAV: 40.0 (~) RAV: 40.0 (~) Not a big draft for Toronto, and after adding zero prospects in S61, their prospect pool is looking quite bare. Stagan was a teammate of mine in Nevada, and I’m a big fan, but the North Stars are going to need to bring in more prospects than just him and their GM’s player. With new management in charge, it’s hard to fairly evaluate the situation here, so I’m just going to say that Toronto landed a good one in Lonley Stagan. Winnipeg Aurora Picks: 2, 4, 5, 11, 12, 14, 16, 41, 51, 54 Draftees: Mikko Rashford (1), Spack Jarrow (2), Jay O'Neil (12), Jaeger Jones (10), Tommy Tightpants (17), Christian Kinsinger (22), Rebecca Montagne (10), Frederico von Schnicktenburg (33), Trevor Malone (64), Jacques Lilcoque (60) EAV: 21.0 (+2.1) RAV: 23.1 (-2.1) I have to imagine that seven 1st round picks is an SHL record, and Winnipeg made excellent use of all seven in my opinion. They acquired a great mix of energetic first gen players and legendary recreate users, adding to their already overflowing cupboard and setting themselves up for a bright future. The Buffalo Stampede, New Orleans Specters, and Tampa Bay Barracuda all skipped out on this draft, and I won’t try to speculate on their motives for that. Interestingly, Tampa Bay also opted out of the S61 SHL Draft, being the only team not to make a pick in either S61 or S62, and I think that may catch up with them sooner than later. Thank you all for reading along with the GCS Rankings this season. I have a lot to work on for next season, including changes to the rating calculations, and I am pretty excited to focus on a smaller draft class for a change. I hope you’ll all check out the S63 GCS Rankings, and you can expect to see the Pre-season Rankings in about a week from today.
