S62 PT #3- Hold this L
#1

I'm sticking with the dual prompt thingy for this season. With all of the prompt 1s over the season, I will allow the option to build a season long narrative if you stick with these prompts. Feel free to jump over to prompt 2 any time you don't feel you can continue, or jump over to prompt 1 if it feels fun to write about. Anyways, here we go.

Please pick ONE prompt to write about. Do not mix and match prompts. Identify the prompt you are using in your submission - Copying and pasting the prompt will deduct from your word count so if you do this make sure YOUR submission is 150+ words excluding the prompt.

PROMPT 1- It was an honor to be selected for this prestigious tournament, you've met your team, and now it's time to lace up and hit the ice.

Your first few games have come and gone, and you're starting to gel with this team. Your next opponent is the Hall-Of-Famers who have a perfect record thus far, and they showed you why. They might be old farts but they sure as shit know how to play hockey. They spanked you, not even close. (if you are on team HOF, you took a tough loss to the Superstars for this prompt)

Written Task: Well, it never feels good to lose. The Hall-of-Famers(Superstars) took it to you and ran circles around you all game. Describe what happened, what went wrong, how your team feels about the loss and how you can come back to fight for a top seed in the playoff rounds. (150+ words)

Graphic Task: Create a graphic depicting a tough moment from this tough loss. Weak goal, getting dangled on, laid out, etc. Label your player and at least one from the opponent team.

PROMPT 2- If you don't understand the previous prompt or that one doesn't sound fun to write about, try this prompt.

Written Task: We've all taken Ls on this site (L<----- this one's mine), feel free to reminisce about any particularly bad ones. Playoff and medal round losses always sting, but talk about some bad losses that really molded your player or you as a user. Have you recovered?

Graphic Task: Create a graphic highlighting any game loss that has impacted your career greatly. Include a player render, 3 stats about the game, and a blurb about why this was such an impactful loss for you.

You will receive 3 TPE for fulfilling all requirements.

All responses are due on Sunday, November 28st at 11:59 CST. NOTE: IF YOU SUBMIT/EDIT AFTER THE DEADLINE YOU WILL RECEIVE REDUCED/NO TPE.

Affiliate claims from either PBE or ISFL or that WSLB thing are accepted; link directly to your post and note if your username is different there.
If you have any questions/concerns, please PM me. Tasks with malicious intent will not be graded. The graders reserve the right to determine malicious intent, after discussion with me. You will not be warned.

This task is for SHL players and send downs only, it is not for SMJHL rookies.

179 words - Prompt 1

Those old coots ran circles around us young guns and it’s honestly demoralizing. We’re the future of the league and we can’t even beat those who are in the tail end of their careers who are well past their prime. The main issue we ran into was taking too many penalties. Those old farts know how to draw calls from the refs and how to disguise their dirty plays as clean and part of the game, so when we retaliate they run circles around us on their highly efficient powerplay that is the big reason why they’re feared. We can rebound from this though because they accidentally tipped their hand to us here in the round robin. By showing us their tips and tricks about dirty plays and similar we’ve memorized what they do and have spent hours in practice working to shut it down. Without their feared powerplay running the show for them, they’ll have to play 5 on 5 the entire time and that’s when our speed and energy comes into play and really dominates the scene.

Prompt 2:

Turn back the clock to July 2014. I was once a wee lad who had stumbled upon an interesting new website named Simulation Hockey League. "Oh wow, this could be interesting. Maybe I'll make an account". I went and created a player and noticed that the SMJHL Entry Draft was scheduled to take place a in a few hours time. "What perfect timing, I'll get to join a team today." So I waited for the draft. Little did I know, it would end up being the longest draft in SMJHL history. A few hours and 12 rounds later, we were nearing the last few picks. "How am I still on the board? Are these people still active? Does no one see I'm in the draft thread? Helloooo". Sadly, no one drafted me. Big L. Sat there for hours.

Fortunately, it didn't take long for St. Louis to send someone to message me. I later signed with them and made it my goal to show up every single player in that draft class. Ended up being picked 10th overall to West Kendall. A long SHL career later filled with many ups and downs, I decided to call it quits in S40. Now that player sits in the Hall of Fame, so I guess I recovered.

I would say one of the biggest L's I've had to hold onto in recent times would be when I got traded to Quebec City Citadelles in hopes of making another cup run after winning the cup previously with Newfoundland. I thought there was a good chance I would be able to win two cups. Unfortunately things did go well in the regular season with the performance of my player and the team. But ultimately we lost in the semi-finals making getting myself traded kind of pointless and went out on a stacked team who lost unexpectedly. I really did think I was going to end up as a double Four Star Cup winner. I felt sadness after that one for sure. Another minor L I've taken recently would be thinking my player would be a decent player on the Toronto NorthStars which turned out to be very untrue. Although things seem to be going good now.

I have been pretty blessed as a player throughout my time here on the site, but I also have had my fair share of L's. Perhaps the most painful L's are the ones when I was on the Edmonton Blizzard and we kept facing the Hamilton  Steelhawks in the playoffs and ultimately falling up short against the league's most beloved franchise. What hurt the most was that we kept forcing game 7's after falling behind in the series, but losing in the deciding game. Just dangling that carrot in front of us and snatching it away the very last minute.

An L that I think many of us will face this season will be for the casino because many of us had taken TOR under but it looks like they will hit the over and screw many of us over. There goes $3M down the drain for me this season!

Fantasy is a hot dumpster fire for me this season as well as i took HAM goalies with my 3rd round pick and they have been one of the worst fantasy goalies this season.

prompt two

the biggest l that i have ever had is not one particular moment in my four plus years of being a member of the simulation hockey league. rather, it is the entire simulation hockey league playoff career of joseph lombardi. he never won a playoff series. ever. which is incredibly surprising for a guy who played in the league as long as he did. the one series that stung the most was his lone playoff appearance with the seattle riot, where he talked shit before the series, played well as his team quickly went up 2-0, then shat the bed as the riot lost the next four games to the panthers. these playoff series losses always stung, but they would go on to be lessons he taught to his client mitchell van der heijden, who's won three challenge cups and a four star cup, so i'd say it's worked out

Prompt 2

Definitely taken my share of Ls on this site. I would say that the ones that hurt the most or at least used to hurt the most were with my SHL team the LAP in the playoffs as we get eliminated in the 1st round of the playoffs every season like clockword. doesn't matter if we are heavy favourites or massive underdogs, we apparently dont stand a chance against any other team according to the FHM sim engine. Hopefully this season is different. I would say I have also taken some Ls in fantasy. Last season I would have been in first place had i not made an ill advised swap at the beginning of the season and that swap dropped me down to 3rd by the end of the season. I guess I handed myself my own L to hold in that case, Hopefully my swap this season is better. Learning experience!

Prompt #2

I don’t think there is one game in particular that stands out but overall I think my call up from the J has been one big L for me. So far it certainly has not been the start of the season I had hoped for. I haven’t been producing the points I expected of myself and kind of feel like I have been letting the team down (although I am sure they would disagree with this sentiment). To answer the question about recovering from this, I’d say I am getting there and trying to set a realistic expectation for myself and not expect that I will continue the points production I had in the J. With all that being said, I still want to see the rest of my season improve and there are still plenty of games left to get those numbers up. Also, if the FHM gods can stop screwing us over I would be grateful.

My biggest L was probably Season 54 with the Vancouver Whalers. After coming off a tough year where the team struggled to adapt to FHM and only won 17 of 50 games, we had high hopes going into the season after a pretty good draft. A 3-1 start seemed to solidify this, but then the wheels completely fell off. The Whalers lost something like 18 of the next 20 games after that and nothing we did worked. Our best strategy was just hoping our goalie Name Redacted could make 35-40 saves and we could win a game. We went 11-37-2 and blew up the team, selling off our captain Sven Yxskaft and our 1C Stracimir Petrovic for picks. Thankfully, this tank job ended up paying off in the end, as we made six draft picks in the ensuing draft that all ended up being key contributors to our championship team in S56. As they say, no pain, no gain.

Commentator 1: And the game is over! The Las Vegas Legends have absolutely spanked Manhattan by a score of 8 to 1.

Commentator 2: And he really funny thing here is we originally believed Manhattan had a chance, especially since they were the first team to score a leading goal against the Legends for an early 1-0 lead.

Commentator 1: Well if you want to call it a callback, the legends took back the lead by the start of the 2nd it was 3-1 and the legends never looked back.

Commentator 2: Let’s go to Jenny on the sideline with the Rage Coach.

Sideline Reporter: If you would give us just a word to describe today’s game what would it be?

Rage Head Coach: Sheesh

Commentator 2: Thank you Jenny, lucky for the Rage they only have to play the Legends 3 more times this season. So if this brings them down the standings, it won’t be by more than a few games.

Commentator 1: That concludes our Postgame coverage, Legends 8, Rage 1.

I think that one of the biggest L's of Aumy Jr.'s career was back in the SMJHL when he was one of the loudest hockey players in an entire league. Aumy Jr. was one of the top prospects in upcoming SHL Draft and he was sure that everything will go as he planned. He was loud, had many conflicts with coaching stuff and even had a suspension with Colorado Raptors. He was still sure that he will be drafted in first round. However, he took a huge L. He went undrafted that season and whole league was pissed off on him. Even next draft when he re-joined he was drafted only with a pick from 6th round.

I think that this league haven't seen that big L ever. However, he made a huge comeback after that. He proved that he is a great teammate and high quality player. He won IIHF bronze medal with Finland, SHL Championship title with Buffalo Stampede and is very close to hit 2000 TPE mark soon. L of the decade and comeback of the decade and both for the same player? Who knows. Everyone has their own opinion.

We had a really terrible time playing against the Hall-Of-Famers team. While we should be faster and quicker because we are younger and in a better shape, it didn’t look like it while we were playing, since it seems like they could anticipate every play we were about to do and create turnover using their experience and superior hockey IQ. We ended up doing a lot of stop and go, because they were able to transition really quickly after each turnover and it seems that every time they gain the puck back, there were multiple passing options available, and we were unable to position ourselves fast enough to block passing lines. They ended up destroying since they were able to make us pay every time we made a small mistake. Even if we can keep up with the team strictly from a skating point of view, their elite passing game and their shooting accuracy kill us.
