S63 PT #5: Source Code

p1

my first idea would be to submit illegal lines for every team (including mine, so they can't figure out it's me. I would vary the ways, but some teams would get two shadows, others two agitators, others two crease-clearers, and yet others would get 4+ players with the same role. This would force HO to hand out continuous punishments to each team in violation of the roles rules and eventually everyone would give up and the SHL would end and I'd get some free time back which would be nice.
the second idea would be to use this as a way to test some things out, so I could go in and edit all of the goalie attributes to make every goalie in the league 155 TPE build and see if they're bad enough that people notice; or vice versa crank every goalie up to full 20s in everything and see if it makes a difference. it probably would tbh! but who's to say except the DATA.

Prompt 1

If I found a way to hack into FHM I would not do anything crazy. What is the point of even putting work into the sim if I can just hit the win button? What I would do was make it so that players on the third line or career long offensive blackholes have random games of god-like offensive brilliance. I’m talking that 800 TPE grinder in their 16th season that is sub 100 career points having a five-goal game. That stay-at-home defender scoring a highlight reel 360 spin goal like Chara did forever ago. Another change I would make that would not really affect the sim all that much would be an increase in the fight threshold. Pretty much the entire league would agree that putting TPE into aggression and fighting is just flushing it down the drain. As much fun as it would be to be an absolute old school beast nobody wants to put their team at a disadvantage either. I’d just mess with the sliders that they are inverted. Now everyone is a blood thirsty goon and we have a Slapshot league.

Franchise Hockey Manager is most definitely an upgrade over the previous sim that the SHL league has used to simulate games, but there are some nuances that seem to be unrealistic. Firstly, the disparity between player talent in the league is quite large and probably unusual for a standard NHL environment in the game. We have players who are nearly maxed out on builds playing against players that are very early in their development and this is what leads to the games where teams are able to rack up 70+ shots on the net, which feels unrealistic for a professional league at the highest level where you would expect a lot more level scoring and competition between teams. I think the update scale change that the league has made is a good step towards remedying this issue, but I would also want to see it go a little further. It is a fine line between making sure TPE matters and making sure that there is some realism, and it's good the league is taking baby steps to find that right line.

Prompt 2:

I think that, by and large, the sim does a good job of emulating real hockey. Player point totals don't tend to get too out of hand over the course of the season, chemisty and player roles have an impact, and the heat/momentum system for goalies is a nice touch. However, there are also ways it could be improved. I feel there are way too many breakaway opportunities. The amount of times I see "he's in alone" or something to that effect is maddening. When you see that line, there's about an 80% chance that a goal is coming. Goalie TPE is another issue that could use adjusting. The fact that some low TPE goalies can have sustained success and not just randomly pull out a good game here and there can be frustrating, devaluing a position that is of vital importance in the sport of hockey. Ultimately, things are in a pretty good place, but these few changes would make a solid impact and make the sim even better.

Prompt 2

FHM has a lot of really great things going for it as a game engine, the whole system and all the complex knobs and dials look great, but I think the biggest issue I have with the it in terms of not meeting real life expectations is just the lack of speed and agility we see in the engine. Literally all you hear about in the NHL is about how fast the game moves and how quick the skating needs to be to keep up, but in FHM it seems like were still in 2004 and bodybuilders end up as better hockey players than those who can skate. I think the lack of diversity in terms of player builds and the seemingly impossible task of actually playing a high-tempo strategy at the gm level is a key weakness, and something which is just completely inaccurate. Some of it is likely down to how the league needs to leverage the engine, and it not mapping out well. But I think I would like to see a fix on that to help buff speed over strength and create some more uniqueness (which is really down to the engine) as well as I would like to see a better balance between strong and weak teams. It feels like the smallest margin in skill leads to an insane amount of possession and shots, maybe its just missing score effects where leading teams should have marginally less offensive output, or something, but there is a real game-y feel to seeing teams light up 60 unblocked shots in a game... this just doesn't happen every time. I wish we could see a similar product to football manager in the hockey space, where there is a real focus on providing a variety of players and strategies that are at least viable and that could help diversify the league, but maybe as a function of hockey itself everything ends up being "the same". 333 words

There are some things fhm does wrong and some things that it gets right. Among things it does wrong, you just never see that many defenseman breakaway goals in real life lol. But I think the most annoying thing is how it distributes power play time, it doesn't matter what you set the toi %, the first power play unit always gets around 80% of PP time, so it's impossible to split ice time evenly between 2 units, which is a strategy employed by some nhl teams irl. If you have more than 3 good forwards, you're essentially forced to choose which of them will get the bulk of PP points, and I hope that this is something that will be fixed in future fhm updates. An interesting addition to how shl uses the game would be editing some of the hidden attributes, for example, if older players get +1 to leadership or something like that.

Prompt 2

If FHM does its best to replicate the game of hockey, it's not trying really hard. It's a shame EHM isn't friendly enough to the type of league we're in as it's the much better sim engine. I would put Simon T above FHM, it's that bad to me in mu opinion. The only thing it's ok at is allowing the SHL to create a custom league with some options. We were told how much more build diversity we would see and not even 2 seasons after FHM becoming our sim engine, a meta build was found. Just put get to 19 in getting open, puck handling and checking and you're good to go. It makes so much sense a whole team having the same build and it working. After all the NHL is a league where all 18 skaters play the exact same way. It would be nice if mental attributes could improve once our player is in regression.

If I had the power to alter the GM AI of the game, I would make sure to start small. The occasional bad lines or bad subbing, maybe even pulling a goalie for no real reason. As the league gets accustomed to this, I would start to ramp up the bad decisions. I would play goalies as skaters and skaters as goalies. Play lines for whole periods without subbing anyone. Randomly cut, sign, and trade players on a whim, usually as an overreaction to one good or bad game. I would still keep these "random" events pretty rare. ISFL puts up with the sim doing stuff like this a couple times a season. Then after that became more acceptable, I would step it up and start to target random teams. Weeks of having your goalie face off, never making subs, basically just tank one or two teams. I would turn the league into chaos.

One of the better things FHM does is represent goalies. People get cheesed and all that surrounding how the best goalies don't have a major influence, how they are seemingly dependent on the team around them etc. etc. but at the same time goaleis are one of the most volatile real life positions. Goalies like Tristan Jarry go from WOAT's in the playoffs to GOAT's the next season. A goalie like Grubauer goes from a good team to a bad team and his numbers reflect that. That aspect of realism is considerably poor--the impact of earning on the site is something expected to be reflected in the game through all positions--but it is undeniably a point of realism.

One thing I find very unrealistic is sometimes the speed of which the game "happens" as far as the sim goes as well as how it represents results. At least in the past there were quite a few plays I could recall where nothing is happening and then there's a shot from the defensive end and it's described in some wild way despite being 2 zones over from the actual net. Or when there's a play where the defensemen holds it, holds it, holds it, loses it, and then skates out and scores. It just doesn't feel realistic or in line with the expected rate of occurences vs. actual in FHM. Regardless, that's a pretty minor complaint to be the main culprit of disconnect so that's pretty good.

Prompt one. I'll be honest with you, I just show up here and earn my TPE and BS in the locker room with the other Pride people. I don't know much about hockey and I don't really know much about how the sim works, so if we're trying to do subtle things to give my team an advantage without other people knowing, I'm probably a bit on the clueless side. So I guess what I'd ultimately end up doing is, well, Hamilton does really well, right? They have all these people that are really into the sim and testing and getting the most out of it and stuff. So I'd just go in there and see what Hamilton is doing with their lines and strategies and all that stuff and put that as my team's strategy. Then I'd put our strategy as Hamilton's strategy. Now obviously they've crafted their players for their strategy so it may not work as well for our team as theirs, but it's still going to be pretty good, right? Like I said, I don't know anything about hockey. I just know that Hamilton is good and that we are also good but not as good as Hamilton.
