First Round Rookies

1. Moritz Seider – Detroit Falcons

Seider was off the board instantly, and it was clear that Detroit went out and got what they wanted. They started firming up that blueline right off the hop. Seider’s season had him putting up a respectable 25 points, and averaging close to 20 minutes a game. Already being thrust into big minutes, it’s clear that Detroit expects a lot out of Seider. His +/- was pretty rough, but that’s to be expected as a rookie playing big minutes on a team near the leagues bottom. Expect to see him develop into a more well-rounded defenceman, and logging time in all situations.

2. Binko Koivu – Colorado Raptors

Binko came in and took on a big role with over 20 minutes a game and logging some serious shorthanded time. He only put up 20pts over the 66 games that he played, however he was solid when he was on the ice and molded him out to be a physical more defensive defenseman.

3. Lord Zomp – Anchorage Armada

Zomp was the first forward taken off the board, and showed us why through this season. While he may not have been able to be a rock defensively for the Armada, he contributed well on the offensive side of the arena potting 16 goals, and adding quite a few helpers as well. He shot at an impressive 15.4%, which shows that when he takes on a bigger role that he will be able to be a true threat in the league.

4. Holden Steady – Detroit Falcons

Detroit wanted to bolster their defense corps heading into the season, and they went and just got a second highly touted defenseman right off the hop. In terms of points and time on ice, Holden was very similar to Seider, however he was able to do it with less PP time. While young, you can expect these two to be a dynamic duo for Detroit in short order.

5. Justin Time – Quebec Citadelles

Time didn’t have the most fun season as a goalie. He lost more than he won, and had a GAA of 3.35. However, a rookie goaltender taking on such a huge amount of responsibility playing 54 games in the 66 games season is a really tough spot to be in. The results improved through the season, and it is clear that time is shaping up to be something special for the Citadelles. Goalies usually take a little longer to full develop, so I expect a strong second season to come.

6. Robert Bergen – Anaheim Outlaws

Bergen played a more sheltered role in his first season with the Outlaws, averaging under 16 minutes a night. This shows in his lowest in first round point total. He did play a significant amount of time on the penalty kill which shows that Anaheim is looking to make him a cornerstone of their defensive sets in the future.

7. Chad Nickelback – Nevada Battleborn

Nickelback had an interesting first season. He put up some impressive point totals on a well-performing team, but he did that all playing out of position as a forward. It is nice to see him able to perform where needed, however we will need to wait until next season to really get a feel for him as a defensive anchor or play generator.

8. Ashley Stubbs – Regina Elk

Stubbs didn’t get a ton of playtime this season (ATOI 14:30), and scored at a lower rate than many in the season as a result. Regina was right around middle of the pack this season, and they will be looking to Ashley to step up in the future to help them climb those rankings. Taking a few more PIM than many rookies, Stubbs largely played 5v5 which may change in coming seasons

9. Tam Bunnings – Maine Timber

Tam Bunnings had an incredible rookie season on a strong Timber team. Lighting the lamp 17 times and adding 31 assist had this rookie scoring at a high rate and helping boost the Timber to their high finish. Averaging over 20 minutes a game, and spending significant time on both the powerplay and the penalty kill, Maine has great faith in this rookie which will only continue now that they have a little more experience.

10. Mikael Jakobsen – Kelowna Knights

Jakobsen was the lowest of all rookies in icetime, but he went out hard in that time he had. Averaging only 11.5 minutes a game, he still managed to put up 19pts. While on the ice though, there was a bit of a liability with the other team frequently outscoring.

11. Evan Winter – Colorado Raptors

Winter is another rookie who jumped onto the ice and really made a difference. Putting up 47pts with 19 goal, Winter was a major contributer for the Raptors. A bit of special teams time on both sides and a solid +9 through the season. Winter is an all situation player who has a strong future in the J ahead of him.

12. Backup Goaltender – Vancouver Whalers

Thankfully for the Whalers, Goaltender never had to be true to his namesake and back the team up in nets. He did however play a whopping 23 minutes a game. That led to him being on the ice for a ton of goals. A respectable 29pts put up, but a very disappoiting -57 which blows most other rookies out of the water. It was a lot of pressure to put on a rookie and hopefully he can recover next season

13. Outdoor Truck – St. Louis Scarecrows

Outdoor Truck had a pretty solid season all in all. Not having put a ton of time on the ice, he put up a respectable 24pts, and found his way to the box a number of time. His shooting percent wasn’t the highest (8.3%) but he played some hard minutes on the penalty kill and wasn’t afraid to go into the dirty areas.

14. Luca Hunziker – Newfoundland Berserkers

With the last pick of the round, a very solid defenseman went to the strongest team in the league. Hunziker had a very strong season, putting up 27 points as a defenseman, all while playing under 20minutes a night. He’s shown that he is going to keep the legacy of the Beserkers alive as such a strong performer.
