(GRADED) Deep Dive #2 - Anaheim's Offseason

It was an interesting time for the Anaheim Outlaws – their GM had departed them, and a new regime came into the front office. In came Fluw, fresh off his Great Falls Grizzlies were dispatched in 5 games by the Newfoundland Berserkers. Fluw worked closely with Head GM Geekusoid, and operated predominately in the drafting and player personnel management areas of the team. He worked incredibly well with Geek, forming a strong partnership and synergy. However, it was no secret that he had his sights set on an SMJHL Head GM role, as he was an applicant during the last expansion.
Fluw communicated with Geek and informed him that he would be applying for the Anaheim Head GM position, and he was awarded the position. He quickly named his partner in crime – Big Newff, who interestingly enough, was a SMJHL draft-eligible prospect. This resulted in some confusion for the Anaheim front office, who were told that there would be no compensatory 1st round selection required for Newff’s player, Patches III, but then were told otherwise after the appointment of Newff to Co-GM was made official. HO rescinded their decision, and Newff was to be drafted with the Outlaws 2nd round selection. Fluw’s and Newff’s first draft was an important one. There were many inactive players to replace and a new culture to build. The Outlaws held all of their natural selections and a bonus pick, a 1st, two 2nds, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th, and they used every one of their picks.

In the 1st round at 9th overall, the Outlaws brass selected diminutive defensive defenseman Lord Farquaads. Farquaads is a small-statured punishing defenseman, who focuses on protecting his goaltender and preventing scoring opportunities for the opposition. When in an offensive scenario, Farquaads keeps his game simple and prefers to dump the puck into the corner for a cycle or to take a quick shot towards the goal for a tip or deflection.

In the 2nd round at 20th overall, as discussed prior, the Outlaws selected their Co-GM Patches The III. Patches is a smooth-skating, cerebral defenseman, who is more interested in turning the puck up the ice and generating scoring opportunities than keeping the puck out of his own net. The strategy from the front office was to draft a long-term defensive pair here for the franchise to build with.

With their second 2nd round pick, the Outlaws selected promising forward Reed Kobo. Kobo is managed by Toivo, a member with a long history in the SHL community and a proven track record of building successful players. Kobo has already stepped in and contributed on the ice in a big way for the Outlaws, and he has a very bright future with the club.

With their 3rd round selection, 34th overall, the Outlaws drafted Marty Sanderson III. Sanderson is a defensively responsible winger with a middle-six upside. He is great at disrupting the play with a solid backcheck and forcing turnovers on the forecheck.

With their 4th rounder, the Outlaws selected winger Adison Bond 48th overall. Bond is a creative forward that knows how to find the soft areas of the ice to create scoring opportunities. He’s got some of those hockey intangibles and hockey sense that can’t be measured. This was a big-time value pick.
