Introduction:
In the season 65 Simulation Major Junior Hockey League Draft class there was a group of brothers with the last name Koivu eligible to be drafted. The players that make up this list are Ricky Koivu, Wide Peepo Happy 3 Koivu, and Jolmi Koivu. All 3 went to seperate teams, now lets summarize how their seasons played out. ![]() To start off we have Ricky Koivu, the forward drafted 12th overall by the Anchorage Armada. Ricky had a respectable season given the record that his team ended up with, scoring 20 points. His offensive side of the game shows potential, but there is far more room for him to grow on the defensive side. Look to see him score more points next season, and hopefully the team around him will be better so his defense looks a little better. The Armada ended up as the 2nd to worst team in the SMJHL this season, so look for Ricky Koivu to be a big presescence in leading this team to a successful rebuild and potentially fighting in the playoffs for a cup in his time in the SMJHL. ![]() Secondly we have Wide Peepo Happy 3 Koivu, a defenseman drafted 18th overall by the St. Louis Scarecrows. WPH3 had a pretty good season overall for a rookie defenseman, scoring 2 goals and 12 assists. Given St. Louis' losing record it is tough for someone to have a positive impact on defense, so the -25 looks a little better viewing it from that angle. This season the Scarerows made the playoffs, but with the improvements of Wide Peepo Happy 3 it is to be assumed they will be fighting for a higher seeding spot than they are this season. Next season I wouldn't expect too many points for WPH3 Koivu, but I expect a far better defensive impact. ![]() Lastly, we have Jolmi Koivu. Jolmi was drafted 36th overall by the Colorado Raptors. Jolmi had arguably the best season of the Koivus, netting himself 35 points. That was good for 17th out of all rookies. Its worth noting that the Colorado Raptors are a contending team, finishing with the top seed in the Pacific conference. This means that defensive impact and scoring would be inflated given him playing with higher quality teammates than his brothers. Next season look for Jolmi to have a bigger role in the successful Raptors offense and potentially scoring more points. Conclusion: Overall it is safe to say that the Koivu brothers have a bright future in the league, the rookies will surely look to get better in their 2nd and 3rd seasons in the Simulation Major Junior Hockey League Seasons. With the legacy of the Koivu brothers already set by Paul Koivu of the Anchorage Armada and younger brother Tommy Koivu, a top propsect in the S66 SMJHL draft, look for the Koivu brothers to be running the league in a few seasons.
