Once upon a time, a fallen star was discovered laying in a secluded forest in the wilds of British Columbia, Canada. A prospector felt something beckon him to this chunk of meteorite in the forest as he was walking, and he brought it home with him. He heated it up in his kitchen oven, and it exploded. Once the light had faded, it was clear that the chunk of meteorite had fashioned itself into what would become the SHL Challenge Cup. The prospector knew what he had to do – he brought it to the SHL Head Office to show them. At first Head Office wasn’t convinced, but then the Cup began to glow again. It glowed so bright it blinded all the board members who were there. After that display of power, the Challenge Cup was forever enshrined as the symbol that would be given to the best team in the league. It is prophecied that one day, it would glow once again when it was held aloft in the hands of a player who was worthy. So far, no one has been proven worthy. 185 words Code: 7. Sweden is always a bit of an enigma to me – high TPE, motivated players, but seemingly unable to make it over that last hump. There’s always something in the way whether it be the USA, Great Britain or an underdog Japan. They are just unable to get over the hump and finish the run to the gold medal. I’m always hopeful that each season will be different but you never know what will happen. IIHF is more interesting that way that it can be completely random who does well and who doesn’t because of the smaller sample size, and the greater variability of the Federation Heads running the things behind the scenes. Before I retire I would to love to have a IIHF Gold and a Challenge Cup, and the IIHF Gold feels so tantalizingly close but as always it can still be a thousand miles away because of the one-and-done tournament format of the elimination rounds. 157 words Code: 16. Did you know that Sweden is 977 miles (1,572 kilometers) long and is bordered by Norway on the west and Finland to the east. Three stretches of water separate Sweden from Denmark—the Skagerrak, the Kattegat, and the Öresund straits. Sweden's Arctic north has been called the "land of the midnight sun," because during the summer months the sun never sets. Even in the capital of Stockholm in the south, the summer nights last only four hours and the sky doesn't deepen beyond twilight. But winter lasts until May and the nights are long and the days are short. Perfect for ice cold outdoor hockey rinks! 106 words

Atlanta is a recent expansion team reaching it's first finals appearance. Chicago has been a dominant force in the league for a long time now, with their last cup win only seven seasons ago in Season 57. If you're betting on these finals, do you go for the experienced vets in Chicago, or the hungry Atlanta first-timers? From my point of view, in the playoffs, you always to favor the teams fill with veterans and who has previous experience in the situation they end up in. On top of that, Chicago finished the regular season first in the league with 19 points more than Atlanta, hence why Chicago are the favorite to win the title. 58 words Code: d. Similar to last season's finals, we see Chicago running a balanced ice-time attack against Atlanta's targeted approach that has some players seeing sheltered minutes. Last season the more balanced attack won out. Do you think we'll see the same again? Why or why not? While I think running a balanced ice time for your forward is probably the best way to go about it, it is just not possible for some teams to reach the final by rolling all their lines, because some of their players on their bottom six just don’t belong in this league. However, Atlanta has had massive success during these series with their current approach and I don’t see why it wouldn’t carry into the final. 76 words Code: 4. Written, 3 TPE, Origin Story (150 words min.) The origin of the Challenge Cup is really mysterious to a point where we don’t actually know from where it came from and how it ended up being the trophy award to the winners of the SHL playoffs. There are a lot of rumors going around about the origins with multiple ones being as possible as the others. However, I will only focus on one of these origins stories which is the one I found the most interesting, even if it is highly unlikely that it is how the Challenge Cup came to be. From what I hear, some part of the Challenge Cup would go all the way back to the Vikings time in Denmark and the cup was forged from a bunch of metal cups that the Vikings bring back to Denmark from England during the 9th century. Then, the cup got passed around Europe for multiple centuries and was reforged multiple time until a Canadian bring it back to Canada at the start of the 20th century after a trip to England and the cup was given to the SHL when by his children when he passed away. 191 words Code: 5. Written, 3 TPE, Cup Check (150 words min.) First of all, the Four Star Cup has by far the coolest name between the two cups. It’s original, while Challenge Cup as nothing really special about it. As a GM, the Four Star Cups is harder two wins, because of the cycle of the junior league. You usually have one season where you will go all in for the cup, something two seasons if you’re lucky, and then, you will have to rebuild, because your best players will move on to the SHL and you will have to do this rebuild through the draft, but you will most likely have traded a few of your top picks since you wanted to go all in. In the SHL, you can more easily build a team that will be competitive for a few seasons. As a player, the Four Star Cup is also harder to win, because you only spend in junior and the team that draft you control you, while in the SHL, you can become a free agent and choose to sign with a team that is competitive. 179 words Code: 7. So, choosing one of the big six countries, Canada, USA, Russia, Finland, Sweden or Czechia was not a possibility. However still wanted to choose a country where the climate is cold enough to develop an hockey culture without it failing behind the other big sports like it’s the case in Ireland, Great Britain or Japan. A) As much as I hate to say this, it is hard to bet against Chicago. Chicago finished as the top team in the league, which makes them the favorite heading into this series. Their players and management team has shown they know how to win. Atlanta will have to run with any momentum they get and hope it sticks. (60 words) B) Well I am going to turn this question on its head a bit. In order to have more take aways, the other team must have the puck for you to take it away. Similar to hits, a team that does not control the puck as much often has more hits, since if you dont have the puck you can't make a hit. Atlanta just needs to play their game. (70 words) C) Discipline always plays a big role, you obviously do not want to spend to much time in the penalty box. These two teams are in the final for the reason, if one team is ending up in the box more often then not it will be trouble. The team with less penalty minutes will definitely have an advantage. (59 words) D) The balance attacked usually wins, keeps your players more fresh and gives you more opportunity to score against the other teams weaker lines. Unfortunately for Atlanta they just do not have the depth to run a balanced attack. Atlanta will need their top players to be efficient when they are on the ice. Chicago will look to tire them out. I would say it is hard to move the top 5 teams in the IIHF out of the top 5 positions. The top 5 teams usually have the largest player crops coming into their roster, which allows them to consistently add in young talent and replace the aging talent. However, these top 5 teams do usually rotate between those 5 positions. Occasionally you will see one of the smaller nations step up and surprise some teams however it is usually a rarity. For my nation, Austria we have slowly been making some progress up the rankings. In the past couple of seasons we have added in some transfers that have really helped us. Our young core is coming into their prime, so we are really hoping we can make some progress this season and for the next couple seasons coming up. The site is running pretty well, but it is not without it flaws. The first thing I would use the money on is recruitment, in order for the league to stay fresh and growing it is important for new players to continue to join the league. Recruitment would get a boost to its budget to go out and recruit players. The other thing I would use money on is site media, there is not enough site / league specific media any more. The SHN was around for a couple of seasons, but after making so much money writing articles they had no need for further SHL dollars. The 2 million of real cash would allow us to pay our writes and hopefully incentives them to continue to write site specific media regarding the league and the stats around them. Finally the remaining money would be used to switch over to a new sim where goalie stats mattered. Any money left would be used on quality of life enhancements. (167 words) 3 tpe 16/16

6. Written, 3 TPE, Dream Team 150 words min You have to create the perfect SHL or SMJHL line for your player to be on. Who do you put on your line and why? Is it something about their style of play that compliments yours? Does it only include players from the present, or do you dip into the past to find an incredible D pair? Or are you just choosing your friends ‘cause they’d be fun to win the cup with? The perfect pairing for Sven Svechnikov thankfully exists on his own team: a pair with the SHL's most iconic animal, Pasta the Turtle. The two have had their differences in the past, with both holding a playoff series victory over each other in the juniors, and both with a cup to their name. Pasta takes exception to Sven's Whaler alumni status, and Sven continues to hold a grudge for when the Berserkers knocked them out. However, the two player's styles complement each other perfectly with Pasta being a defensive specialist and Sven leaning towards generating offense from the blue line. The future looks really bright for Edmonton with these two future stars on the blue line, and hopefully they can get a cup together instead of against each other for once. Time will tell, as both of them have been growing at a steady pace and if this season was any indication they both seem to have caught on to the SHL level of play very well. 7. Milestones +3 TPE - Milestones 15. Written, 3 TPE, IIHF Hype (150 words min.) Write your predictions for this year's IIHF tournament or WJC! Do you think the same teams will be on top this year, or are we due for some turnover? How are you feeling about your country’s chances this time? Any players that you think will light up the tournament? Great Britain missed the playoffs last season by a hair, but that's not going to happen again. The youngsters have been growing at a pretty steady pace, and the rebuild is almost complete. Great Britain has taken a bit of a break the past couple seasons, but it's mainly to lull the rest of the league into a false sense of confidence. Soon the entire international community will fear the words "GOD SAVE THE QUEEN! GOD SAVE THE SHL! YOU WANKERS" as we score goal after goal after goal. This season does have a lot of unknowns though, as we saw a pretty unique group in the playoffs last season. USA, Canada and Sweden are going to continue to be powerhouses, but it seems like the Swiss and Russians are closing the gap. There's going to be a lot of compelling storylines this season as regression hits aging vets and we see which countries have recruited well over the last few seasons can do. 16. Written, 2 TPE, Home Country (100 words min.) Why did you choose your IIHF country? Is it where you’re actually from? Is it where your friends play? Was it for a specific role play reason? I want to know how you decided where your player comes from! Sven was originally from Sweden, and he had some good runs in the WJC there. However, his goal has always been the same: to prove he's the best Sven in any way possible. When an opening appeared to be a federation head in the IIHF, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to do just that. Sven applied to be a GM of Great Britain, and quickly helped lead them to a Silver and Gold medal in successive seasons. Now he is both playing and GMing for the Brits, something no other Sven has done before. By the time he retires, everyone will have to agree that he is the best Sven in the league. 18. Written, 2 TPE - The Procrastinator Special! (100 words min.) Congratulations, procrastinator! Through your terrible time management skills, you’ve unlocked a special task! [TEAM] has won it all! Were the playoffs as you expected this year, or were there some surprises? Did anything stand out to you about this season’s final series? Chicago ended up winning the cup, and I'd say it was a bit of a surprise. Chicago was definitely in the top 3 of teams I would expect to win, but probably was number 3 on that list. There were a lot of upsets in the playoffs this year though, seeing San Francisco, Atlanta, and Hamilton making it farther than I would've initially expected. Atlanta tried to make it a competitive series in the finals, but they were ultimately just outmatched. However, Micool did make it to the cup so his prophecy is getting closer to being right every season. He'll get it someday. 16/16

Atlanta is a recent expansion team reaching it's first finals appearance. Chicago has been a dominant force in the league for a long time now, with their last cup win only seven seasons ago in Season 57. If you're betting on these finals, do you go for the experienced vets in Chicago, or the hungry Atlanta first-timers? b. Chicago's lineup is much more active with their sticks than Atlanta's, racking up 97 takeaways to Atlanta's 79. This late in the playoffs, how do you adjust to a team that's so adept at picking your pocket? c. Atlanta has only 32 penalty minutes in these playoffs compared to Chicago's 45. With emotions high and the Challenge Cup on the line, do you think discipline will play a big role in this series? d. Similar to last season's finals, we see Chicago running a balanced ice-time attack against Atlanta's targeted approach that has some players seeing sheltered minutes. Last season the more balanced attack won out. Do you think we'll see the same again? Why or why not? a. I am absolutely going to be betting for Chicago in this matchup. They have the experience and they have the history. This team has looked near unbeatable all season long and I don’t know how you could bet on anyone else with any good conscience. It is the easy and obvious choice. In fact I'd be surprised if Chicago didn't roll out of this with one one loss at most. b. I think Atlanta's best bet is to play smart and safe with the puck to help mitigate Chicago's ability to take it away. Keep the passes short, don't spend too much time solo with the puck, and be efficient with your movements. Create gaps in the defense and avoid any form of one on ones just to keep things as clean as possible. c. I don't think that discipline will play a role in this game at all. Neither one of these teams made it this far by being sloppy or undisciplined. I think both teams know how to use their aggression to their advantage and both know how to kill penalty minutes. I can't imagine it shifting the results one way or the other. d. I absolutely think you will see the balanced approach succeed. Chicago runs a balanced approach because they have the talent to put on the ice to make it work. They have no need to lean one way or the other or to limit their players because the team is just that good. I think that will play a huge role in the game overall. 3. Written, up to 4 TPE - Grab Bag: Pick up to 4 Four Star Cup related topics to write about! Each topic is worth 1 TPE. Each answer must be 50+ words. a. Newfoundland has gotten 25 points in 11 games from two of their top D, Rand al'Thor and Mikko Rashford. If you're Quebec's coach, how do you adjust to Newfoundland having guys on the blue line that are just as offensively dangerous as the wingers? b. Quebec has three players shooting 20% or better in Bertrand, Utah, and Kidd. If you're the Newfoundland defense, how do you find a way to bottle up three forwards that can't seem to miss the back of the net? c. Looking at each teams' PDO, we see that Quebec is riding a bit of a hot streak while Newfoundland has actually been a bit unlucky. Do you think this a is a good thing for either team? Is Newfoundland bound to find some luck, or are they going to get stuck in a rut? Is Quebec going to come back down to Earth, or did they get hot at the right time? d. Newfoundland has appeared in all 4 of the last SMJHL finals and won 3 of them. Quebec, a consistently strong presence in the SMJHL, has a lot of playoff success behind them as well, having won several series since their last 4 Star in S58. How do you approach this series mentally on either side? If you're Newfoundland, are you worried your streak can't last forever? If you're Quebec, do you fear that you can't take down a goliath? a. If I'm Quebec, I'm looking to avoid situations where these two defensive guys can take over the game with their shooting. Quebec will need to play a tight defense when Newfoundland has the puck and keep guys in close to help support their goalie on every push. No solo play, no getting caught out of position. Tight team play will be the only solution. b. For Newfoundland to silence these absolute snipers that Quebec has at forward, I think they'll need to take advantage of the range their defenders have. These guys can clearly hit targets from anywhere on the ice, so they can feel safer keeping their defenders back even when they're going on the attack and I think it'll really limit Quebec's opportunities. c. I think that the fact of luck is a little overrated and overexaggerated across sports. Yes, luck can play a factor, but these are athletes who are in peak shape and at the top of their game. I don't think streaks really impact the game as these players got here by being focused and taking games one at a time. I think you'll see them honed in on what is in front of them and not focusing on what happened before now. d. I think Quebec has to be going into this game fairly nervous. Newfoundland made it very clear that they were the dominant team in the juniors this season and for Quebec, even picking up a win or two will have to feel massive for them. I don't think they can be going into this series thinking they can seriously win, but they can have some fun with it and maybe they can even challenge the titans that are the Berserkers. 5. Written, 3 TPE, Cup Check (150 words min.) Which league has the more prestigious cup in your opinion, the SHL or the SMJHL? Which cup is harder to win? A lot is said about the different skill sets required to GM in each league, so which do you personally think is tougher to manage? Is a trophy case with three Four Star Cups as cool as a trophy case with three Challenge Cups? Maybe you think it’s even cooler. Why? I have always thought that the Four Star Cup was both the more prestigious and harder to earn trophy in the world of the SHL. The teams in the juniors are in constant flux where they only ever get their players for a maximum of four seasons and more often than not, they don't even get that long with those players. Where as SHL GMs can assemble solid teams and have the same group of guys be good for 10-12 seasons as they slowly replace one guy here and another guy there, SMJHL GMs are looking at potentially having to rebuild half their roster almost every single season. They can't really prepare for the future because things like call ups are unpredictable and you never know when the next draft class could flop and a combination of the two could cripple your roster. I think what a team like Newfoundland has done despite all the adverse factors that can kill a team in the SMJHL is huge! 7. Milestones, up to 3 TPE Milestones are folded in with CW. Code: Task 1 Code: Task 2a Even if the series is currently 3-1 in favor of the Chicago syndicates, I would go all in for Atlanta. Some would say that’s it’s not a responsible bet, but I believe in goldengluts and hotdoge. I believe in the team. It’s Atlanta time to shine. It takes a minimum one IRL year to build a franchise and reap the fruits of our effort. It takes a full locker room of people being actives week after week and buying into a system crafted by a skillful gm. Even with you do this you face mastodonte like Hamilton that seems impossible to win. In the J you can have fake active and the cycle is way shorter. The SHL skillset is harder to manage for all the reasons that I said in my last paragraph. The biggest skill that a J gm needs is the ability to scout new-gen and makes them stick to the game. SHL gm has a better idea of the player capacity. Three challenge cups is cooler. It’s harder and it means that Hamilton lost 3 time in his career. BUT I would like to have a four-star cup one day Code: Word count : 170 Code: Task 7 +3 TPE - Milestones Code: Task 20 It would be really easy to transform the SHL in a capitalist hell hole. I can do it for cheaper than two million dollars. First I would tie the TPE to the ICE cards. No more weekly training and activity checks. You gain tpe by battling your cards. Your card team does a weekly game against another user and if you win you get 5 tpe. League job would stop paying money and I would use the money from the 2 million dollars to pay the minimum wage maintainer. The cards would only be buyable with real money. There would be a free-to-play currency too but it would be really hard to get. After that I would create a flashy mobile app with a lot of numbers and animation. It would be possible to buy cosmetics for your player. I would destroy all the LR and replace it with a fake LR full of bots. We don’t want the users to talk to each other and complain. While there is still a little more growing left for this pretty young team, this will be the first time many season that there is an actual chance for this nation to be competitive and maybe make it out of the round robin. Written, 3 TPE, Dream Team 150 words min F - Chimkin Wing F - Mats Marner F - Kriss Darzins D - Chris Goodname D - Zebulon Leavitt That would be my choice. The choice was simple, I just picked up the best Latvian players of this moment, because it's with them that I have the greatest pleasure to play together. It's not that I don't like my SHL club but just have to meet with these players once a season and that moment is pretty special, given that they're actually all the leaders of their clubs. I have also had the honour of playing a major role in Montreal this season and being a leader, and together we are one great and great five. I could make a variety of five, because I've had the honour to play with a lot of players. It would be possible to set up a player-top for SMJHL as well as a player-top for former SHL clubs. The options are different, but this time I stick to Latvians. (162 words) Code: 16. Written, 2 TPE, Home Country (100 words min.) The answer is simple. I'm a latte. And I like my country, I'm a real patriot of my country. I also think if I had offers to play elsewhere, I'd certainly give up. It's all about nothing but the fact that I love Latvia. Many don't know where Latvia is, but those who follow hockey know who Latvia is and what its strengths are. I would also recommend that everyone stay here because, although we are not a huge country, we are a beautiful and historic country. Then I can say that the Latvians are a real hockey nation that always loves this game. And I certainly don't want to see my national hockey favorites in low places every year. I'll certainly change it! (124 words) Code: 15. Written, 3 TPE, IIHF Hype (150 words min.) Every season, I have the chance to predict the tournament, and I am happy to say that I think this tournament might be more interesting than usual. Here we will also see new features in the direction of the future, as it is slowly apparent which teams choose to build more like team remodeling. The leaders will certainly see USA, Canada, Sweden and Finland teams as usual. I'm sure we'll see a pretty familiar scene in the bottom end. Germany, Latvia, Russia and Austria - these teams will certainly be more or less at the bottom of the table. As head of the Latvian team, I have the opportunity to look at this from another point. Personally, I'm trying to attract new players to the team, and I hope that will justify it in the name of the future. I'm ready to go over any obstacles to lift the team to the top and keep it there. I haven't looked into a series of results so far, so it's easy and objective for me to answer this question about that choice. I'm certainly just about winning a fight, but I'm a little Latvian about Chicago. But if we look from the historical side, I'm about Atlanta's victory and a new record in the history books. (58 words) c.) Discipline always plays a huge role, especially in moments as responsible as this. I would like to enjoy this responsibility and see how much I can pick up. Each earned rejection can change the team's game to the opposite direction, which certainly can't always be positive, so I say it's not worth playing with fire and there needs to be a huge discipline. Trivia Confirmation Word: Tremp
Just fyi, i know absolutely nothing about hockey, so pls take every answer with a grain of salt. I'm trying my best here :D 3. a) It's a good strategy to have one of the defensive guys be set up as more offensive. I'm actually planning to do the same. But it also has its bad side to it. The whole team has to play around it. The other defender in the line has to be an insane defender to be able to survive the counter attacks on his own. b) As the Newfoundland defense i would focus on blocks. You either want them to only shoot from long range because thats the only opportunity they'll get, or you want to be able to block each and every shot they take at your goal. At any cost. You don't wanna overcommit to the shots and leave open gaps behind you tho. c) It really does look like Quebec is getting hot at the right time. This is where it counts! Newfoundland is so insanely good even on a bad day that I think that they will probably have a good shot at winning this with a couple semi bad games. It's gonna be a fun final to watch! d) If you're Newfoundland you have to make sure that you're players are not acting too cocky. You want them to be confident and prepare really well. You don't want them to be overconfident and to not take Quebec seriously. It's tought for the Newfoundland Coach, but he also has experienced players that know how to handle the situation. 5.It's very hard to compare the two Leagues and their cups. I think both have their tough sides to it. As a SMJHL GM you will always have to deal with new rookies that don't know how the game works. It's your job to take em and show them everything about the league and why we enjoy it soooo much! As a SMJHL GM you have to be able to react to situations immediately. You can be screwed by a rookie losing interest, by a sudden call up or someone from your team becoming a GM somewhere else. Tbf the last one can be said for both jobs. In the SMJHL you always have to know what your team is looking like in the next 3-4 seasons. You have to know when you can push for it and when you cant. As a SHL GM you have to play the long game, you always have to make sure that you bolster your squad enough that it is in a position to fight for the cup. Which is very tough to do for more than a couple seasons. Which is why some teams decide to go for full rebuilds. It just gives them a fresh restart with new people and they can slowly but surely set their team up for a great success! 6. This is a tough one! My Center would be Makrus Jager from Edmonton, my Right defense would be Pasta the Turtle, also from Edmonton. Back ups to that would be my current defensive partners, Patey and Holden Steady. Those guys are awesome but Jager and Pasta are my OGs. For Left Wing I would take my buddy Sconnie McHits, he has been doing a phenomenal job for Detroit! We've almost reached the final this time around. I can't wait for next season! It will be awesome! On the right wing I would play my SHL GM Luke. He has been absouletyl fantastic so far and I don't know anyone that would fit better into this line up. Allthough this team or line is not very balanced. You have the two Edmonton players above 1k TPE and then the other 3 around 800 and 530 TPE. It's not a very good line TPE wise but character wise it's probably one of the best in the league 7. https://simulationhockey.com/showthread....pid3208913 1 - 3 3 - 4 5 - 3 6 - 3 7 - 3 16/16

I want to highlight @hotdog who I think is an awesome person here and I have had some great talks with before in these sim leagues and I don't think he necessarily gets enough credit for it, or at least I have not personally told him that I think he is awesome. So there you go! I think you are a cool guy and I am really happy we get to be teammates in another league. I also appreciate the work you have done here in this league and in other leagues and I hope you can find a lot of success with your teams and your players. 20. Written, 3 TPE, Ruthless Capitalist (150 words min.) Isn't this just what the SBA does? Yeah, I mean you give away TPE for money, that is the main way to make this profitable. Buying extra TPE with money instead of work guarantees that at least those obsessed with making the best players will always buy the extra TPE, like we see in the SBA and other leagues where this is a thing. Pay to win works in many games for a reason, because people want to win and are willing to pay for it. I honestly don't think it even needs anything else. The more money you spend, the more TPE you get for your player and will then have a better shot at winning MVP and other awards. Maybe also make it so GMs can pay money to get extra cap space for their team, that way GMs are also super incentivized to pay money for that extra chance to win a championship. Maybe free agents can be bought with real money too, obviously the site would take a cut. 2. Written, up to 4 TPE - Grab Bag: Pick up to 4 Challenge Cup related topics to write about! Each topic is worth 1 TPE. Each answer must be 50+ words. a. Obviously being a veteran in this situation gives you the experience and maybe calmness you need, but personally, I would bet on the underdog and they are hungry and crazy for the win and will do everything in their power to actually get the win in this finals. I really think that when you have already been there before, you are not as hungry for it anymore. c. Discipline always plays a huge factor in these games and especially in the finals. Any weakness will be exploited and you really don't want to give the other team the advantage of having extra men on the ice. It just is a huge advantage and any goal could be the deciding factor in this series so you really don't want to give the other team an advantage this way. 16 TPE - done |
