What an off season we are having! with roster move, trades, and really stacked draft, this offseason had been interesting. The draft comes to a close and you can really start seeing where GM's are taking their teams and the progress teams who are rebuilding are making. Looking over this years draft we really see a abundance of recreates but still some quality numbers in the 1st Gen players as well. I feel its a good draft class when you have a good balance to both. I feel each team has really made good strides forward in this draft and no team really "failed" the draft just going to grade team based on comparison to others in the draft. If you see your team with a low grade its not that I feel the team won't compete or anything its just comparing to other teams they just might not have made the splash needed in this years draft. Ok so here we go!
Anchorage Armada - S64: 12-47-7 Notable Departures: Spack Jarrow, Paul Koivu Holes in Lineup: Wingers Draft Picks: 4,16,30,44 4OA - Philippe - Eko Eel RD 16OA - Edward Elric G 30OA - Matty Ice RW 44OA - Giulio Cesare Polerio RD Draft Grade - C+ Future Outlook - B+ This does come to much of a surprise here. This grade isn't indicative of their picks as much as addressing their needs. They lost 2 of their top 3 scorers, who happened to both be wingers. The went D off to start. Eko Eel is a great pick at 4OV or possibly higher, I just don't see it meeting needs the team had coming into the draft. All 4 draft picks are well selected I would have liked to see some movement earlier in the draft to trying and find some replacements at wing. I feel this rebuild will start turning the corner soon and with these additions its going to really be fun to watch. The draft this year just didn't address the key needs with such big departures. Carolina Kraken - S64: 22-36-8 Notable Departures: None Holes in Lineup: C, LW Draft Picks: 7, 18 7OA - Julian Eaglesong C 18 OA - Thomas Nitro LW Draft Grade - B+ Future Outlook - B+ This was an overall good draft for the Kraken. They filled spots that seemed like the holes in their roster and even brought in what looks to be a fresh blood 1st Gen. With little change from last years roster and no real notable departures this CAR team can look to progress with a big step this year. They were a bit light on picks and did not seem too eager to move back into the first 2 rounds but with the roster the way it is, that does hurt them much. The future is bright here knowing they are not losing anyone and could even keep the majority the year after too. Lets just see how some of these young prospects develop to see just how bright this team can be. Colorado Raptors - S64: 44-13-9 Notable Departures: Shoyo Hinata, Vin Bangs-Wamy, Jamal Nightingale, Magnus Galtisson, Jalal ad Din Afinogenov Holes in Lineup: W, D Draft Picks: 12, 17, 27 12OA - Koty Kochan C 17OA - Tom Pedersen W Draft Grade - C- Future Outlook - D Well, where to begin? COL is in for a tough road ahead. They are losing the core of their lineup and a majority of their top scorers. The lack of top 10 picks (0) and lack of top 20 picks (2) show if after the draft there is alot of work to do here. I believe the current roster is light which means they will need to pick up FA to fill and no FA or prospect can really fill the shoes of those who left. This is the start of a long rebuild. I don't know how much effort was put in to getting higher up picks or trying to gain some more but the lack of picks and amount leaving just doesn't give much progress as other teams this draft. Detroit Falcons - S64: 43-18-5 Notable Departures: Sconnie McHits, Zayne Dangle, Wendolene Ramsbottom Holes in Lineup: D, LW Draft Picks: 11, 43 11OA - Julian Florsch D 17OA - Jim Bob Alabama D Draft Grade - C+ Future Outlook - B With the GM moving up and couple others closing in on their last year, DET is in need of some quality earners in their limited picks. They are still really solid core roster with some big drafts last 2 season, but with any good roster age becomes a factor. They addressed the bigger concern if depth at D with both picks being used on D-men. I still feel the future is solid here but it really depends on how more years some of their S63 players have left. They are stacked in the S63 era and if they possibly all get the call next year it could be same situation as COL this year. Great Falls Grizzlies - S64: 29-31-6 Notable Departures: Brick Wall, Vadim Askerov, Lewis HamiltonIsBlessed, Frederico Von Schnicktenburg. Shylo Moxii Holes in Lineup: W, D Draft Picks: 14, 35, 40 14OA - Alisters Vismanis LW 35OA - Xman Damson Jr C 40OA - Alvin Towne G Draft Grade - B- Future Outlook - C+ DA BEARS! The Grizzlies seemed active in this years draft making moves to try getting some more picks. They are losing some players but also have some growing in the system. I don't see a big step forward here possibly another middle of the road team this year, but moves are happening and progress is coming. They made good selections here picking up a G knowing Brick leaving and Hank getting deeper in his career, stashing a G in the draft let them earn so when Hank leaves you have a solid player ready to fill in. Also getting Vismanis where they did was a good selection as well. Solid bank and great track record on player creation. Kelowna Knights - S64: 31-28-7 Notable Departures: Tim Riggins, Christian Kinsinger, Ben Jammin Holes in Lineup: G, D, W Draft Picks: 8, 15, 21, 32 8OA - Rikkert Biemans LW 15OA - Graj Virrok G 21OA - Munko Aitmukhambetov RW 32OA - Casey Fantobens G Draft Grade - B+ Future Outlook - B The Knights did well here. They are managing what would be a stealthy rebuild. They have worked alot of inactive veterans in the lineup to compete each year while still acquiring numerous picks each year and rebuilding the bottom of the roster under the blanket of high end TPE inactives. They are drafting well to cover the positions that will be exposed when the IA's are no longer there so it wont even be like they lost a step. This was a smart draft for KEL and the future is still bright here. Well done. Maine Timber - S64: 41-24-1 Notable Departures: Viktor Krunk, Alexis Paquette, Jesper Aittokallio, Smailliw Edac Holes in Lineup: C, W Draft Picks: 6, 28, 37 6OA - Emil Egli D 28OA - Nibbles The Squirrel RW 37OA - Sir Devoir G Draft Grade - C+ Future Outlook - C Well, the Timber didn't quite fill some holes that were needed but made good use of the picks they did have. They will be losing some decent scorers and I still feel they are somewhat weak in the middle of their lines, but picked good picks then it came to them in the draft and sometimes you just need to take the best that is available. I know its a goalie and they tend to drop but getting a user like Wildfire at 37 is a great value. They are losing a backup and with time we could see Devoir take the reigns so well drafted here. I just am not seeing a big jump in progress as a roster "yet" there is steps forward I just see other team closing in on MET rather than them pushing away. Slight regression here. Nevada Battleborn - S64: 41-16-9 Notable Departures: Wing Wang, Connor O'Byrne, Dobby Hintzskanen Holes in Lineup: LW, C Draft Picks: 10, 22, 38 10OA - Steven Connors LW 22OA - Dominik Froste LW 38OA - Luigi Ferraro RD Draft Grade - A- Future Outlook - A- BATTLEBORN! This was a great draft for Nevada. They lost few solid LW's to the SHL and went right at filling those holes in this draft. Connors is a 2 time Four Star Cup winner and should be a big piece in the future of Nevada. This lineup is just scary from top to bottom. The GM's have done such amazing work building this roster and I feel this is a front runner for the championship this year. Very well done in this draft. Newfoundland Berserkers - S64: 57-8-1 Notable Departures: Alexander Mackenzie, Jeff Larsson, Tommy Tightpants, Emeril Lagasse, Mikko Rashford, Jonas Johansson Holes in Lineup: RW, C, D, G Draft Picks: 23, 42 23OA - Kayden King D 42OA - Samuel Piccard G Draft Grade - C Future Outlook - B- This is the team I feel everyone was waiting to read about. The Berserkers have been top dogs for awhile now, but things always come to an end. I just feel with the losses they are having in the offseason its time to see the regression. I also feel they had a pretty stacked S63 where some are on their last year as well so possibly another big loss after this coming season too. With that being said they only got 2 picks this year and none in the top 20. This isn't great progress for how much is leaving this year and upcoming. They did get some decent players in those 2 picks this year but I still feel it fell short to what they are losing. I don't see the team dropping to the bottom in the standings considering a solid S63 class still at the helm but I don't feel they will be nearly as dominant as past years. Regression to come. Quebec City Citadels - S64: 46-17-3 Notable Departures: Aksel Fiske Holes in Lineup: RW,G Draft Picks: 3, 26 6OA - Otis Boudreaux RW 26OA - Nikolai Skovgaard D Draft Grade - B Future Outlook - A- Wow, talk about straight progress here. QCC is losing a good player in Fiske, but thats about it. They made a run at the championship last year and their roster nearly wont change. This team is going to fight it out with NBB I believe for top team. I am not even sure how but getting 6th pick as the 2nd best team is only pushing this team even farther. The is some amazing GM work and player growth here. I am a big fan of this team and hope they do well this year. Great work. Regina Elk - S64: 34-28-4 Notable Departures: Jaeger Jones, Yannick Svoboda, San-Sam Emerson, Rebecca Montagne Holes in Lineup: G, C, RW, D Draft Picks: 20, 34 20OA - Ralph Ryan C 34OA - Angry Gilmore LD Draft Grade - C+ Future Outlook - C+ The Elk are a tough team to read. They are losing some decent spot on the roster and are in need of some young talent to fill those roles. The draft did not really work its self out. They did trade up to get 5 spots up from 25 to 20 but that minimal of a move and losing picks later in the draft is just limiting your depth for possibly a same quality player 5 spots down. Now I do not know if there were players involved in this trade and if so it could likely increase my draft grade a bit but for now and just seeing the surface, I wouldn't say it was the best draft for Regina. Though the picks at the numbers were good they did fill positions they needed. The future is tough to grade here. They did lose some top end players and have some developing but I also don't see a huge jump in standings this year or even next. Maybe a jump when the S65 gets another cap. We will see. St. Louis Scarecrows - S64: 22-41-3 Notable Departures: Sisyphus Embros, Rolf Korhonen Holes in Lineup: D, G, RW Draft Picks: 5, 13, 24, 31, 36 5OA - Tommi Koivu LD 13OA - Bavel Pure RW 24OA - Jonathan Mercer RD 31OA - Konstantin Ayrapaa-Mottonen LD 36OA - Anthony Dionne G Draft Grade - A- Future Outlook - A- The Crows have really started the offseason with a bang. They added big goal scorer in Brandon from Yukon, for late round pick, and then worked to acquire 5 picks this year in the draft all in the top 40. They arent really losing alot this year Rolf moving on is big but can be filled with the numerous picks available and thats what they did. Going with 3 D-men this year to add depth and a big RW to fill a spot with Embros leaving this is huge progress forward. Great moves by the GMs here and the future is just that much better knowing they made the playoffs and are only gaining positively this off season I see a bump to the standings this year and even more for seasons to come. Fantastic Vancouver Whalers - S64: 11-46-9 Notable Departures: Benjamin Surkhi-Ze'ev Holes in Lineup: W, C, G Draft Picks: 2, 9, 19, 39, 47 2OA - Edge Rocks RW 9OA - Benson Fiorentini LW 19OA - Pyotr Gallen RW 39OA - Mayson DeMonta C 47OA - Manny Vector G Draft Grade - A- Future Outlook - A- The Whalers did very well this draft. They are deep in a rebuild, but are building fast. They are not losing alot here, kinda of like STL. They are only growing with this offseason. They are adding 5 picks in this draft and as shown above they are in need of Wingers. They did just that. They used their first 3 picks on solid wings to add to the roster and then picked the other 2 needed positions C and G. This is going to take some time for these last couple drafts to develop but you can be sure that VAN (like years past) will be climbing the standings and looking for the word dynasty to ring again in Vancouver. Very nice. Yukon Malamutes - S64: 29-30-7 Notable Departures: Lesgo Brandon, Drakocarr Sunazzo, Jeremy Hall, Trevor Malone Holes in Lineup: C, D, W Draft Picks: 1, 25, 29, 33 1OA - Oles Kobliska C 25OA - Pablo Pombo RD 29OA - Flackoveli Lagerfeld RW 33OA - Joey Pizza RW Draft Grade - B+ Future Outlook - A- The Malamutes are crushing the offseason with big moves not only with players but with the team as well. The team rebranding was all part of revamping the atmosphere with the new GM's. They have been making HUGE strides to take ths organization back to the top. hey made big moves ahead of the draft and as well in the draft, all while securing the 1OA pick. They filled the holes they had and added even more depth to an already young team. With the departure of their top scorer they have more than enough big players to fill the shoes and there is only more coming. The organization is in the right track to the top and the GM's are making it clear they mean business. The was a fantastic draft for Yukon and the future shaping up to be great as well. Well this wraps up the team by team draft recap. Again simply opinion based rankings and on progress alone not just on overall team. I wanted to really show some insight I saw from the draft and the teams I feel took big steps forward with this draft and which teams fell a little short when it came to improving from the draft. Thank you all for reading (if you somehow made it this far lol) Until next draft! (2,620 Words)
