PORTLAND, ME. - As we near the end of the first period of the season let’s take a look at how the second place Timbers rookies have fared. The Timber currently sit in second place in the league with a 17-4-1 record with 35 points. Scoring 90 goals and allowing just 59, the team consists of a solid group of veterans as well as an exciting crop of newcomers. Let’s take a look at the Timber newcomers and how they’re contributing in their professional debuts. This year’s rookie class consists of three draft picks: Defender Emil Egli, Right Wing Nibbles The Squirrel, and Goalie Sir Devoir. Defender Matthew Mayhem joined off of waivers shortly after the start of the season to round out the class for Maine.

Emil Egli is off to a solid start as he’s adjusted to the pro game. Averaging over 18 minutes of ice time a game and chipping in 3 goals and 9 assists for 12 points on the attack in addition to a constantly improving defensive performances. Egli has a +6 +/- through his first 22 games. Stacking up big hits as well as contributing on the offensive end of the ice, Egli has been everything that management had hoped for and more out of their first round draft pick.

Nibbles The Squirrel has impressed with 18 points (5 goals and 13 assists) through his first 22 games. The pint sized Right Wing has been seeing almost 18 and a half minutes of ice time each game and has  a +/- of +3. Nibbles may be small but opposing teams are always careful to keep him in their sights as he’s making a name for himself and earning a reputation as an offensive weapon that can light the lamp at any second.

Rookie net minder Sir Devoir has had a solid start to his career as the backup to one of the best goalies in the league in Adam Rage. Devoir has won 5 out of his first 7 games and has shown impressive dedication to training off the ice in his maiden season. Always the first on the ice at practice and the last to leave the facility, Devoir has made a name for himself both in the locker room and the surrounding community. He looks to continue to build on his success and learn from Rage as the two continue to be a top tender throughout the SMJHL.

Matthew Mayhem joined the team with high expectations for himself and has had an up and down start to his career through just 13 games. Matthew burst onto the scene claiming that he would be one of the best defenders in the league, and while he’s shown glimpses of greatness he’s still got a long ways to go before teams take note of his name. He’s notched a goal and an assist, both coming in the same game and has a +2 in the +/- column. Mayhem has been learning the ropes on the 3rd defensive pairing and looks to solidify himself as a reliable defender as the season progresses.

The newcomers hope to continue to improve their skills and help propel the Timber into a playoff race this season and continued success going forward.
