S65 PT #3: The Pest Around
#1

Please pick ONE prompt to write about. Do not mix and match prompts. Identify the prompt you are using in your submission - Copying and pasting the prompt will deduct from your word count so if you do this make sure YOUR submission is 150+ words excluding the prompt.

PLAYER PROMPT - Your team is down 5-2 to your league rivals, it's late in the third, and as a group you just can't seem to get anything going. You look down the other teams' bench and they're over there laughing and having a grand old time with their comfortable 3 goal lead and their gorgeous, handsome faces. Wouldn't it be nice to get under their skin a bit in any way possible? If you can't seem to beat them... what do you do?

Written Task: Does your player have it in them to be a pest? Do they enjoy finding ways to irritate their opponents even if they can't find a way to actually win the game? Or is this kind of thing beneath you? Are you a good ol' hockey player through and through? Maybe a mix of both? If you are a bit of a pest, tell me some of the tricks your player likes to get up to. If you aren't, tell me what your player thinks of other players that DO like to do these things.  (150+ words)

Graphic Task: Show me your player getting into some on-ice mischief OR show your player stopping a teammate that's about to start causing trouble.

HOCKEY PROMPT- If you don't feel like talking about your player this week, I want to ask this question about hockey and sports in general.

Written Task:  Do you think mischief like dumping water into other players gloves, snowing goalies, or just generally being annoying has a place in hockey? What do you think about these little interactions that aren't technically against the rules, but can certainly throw players off their game and make them unhappy? I'm not talking about violent stuff, just annoying stuff. Is it fun? Is it entertaining? Or do you get mad when you see people doing that? I want to know what you think about pests and people that "toe the line" so to speak in sports. (150+ words)

Graphic Task:- Edit your player into any famous "pest" moment from hockey history.

You will receive 3 TPE for fulfilling all requirements.

All responses are due on Sunday, June 5th at 11:59 PST. NOTE: IF YOU SUBMIT/EDIT AFTER THE DEADLINE YOU WILL RECEIVE REDUCED/NO TPE.

Ben Jammin is already one of the most revered and despised players in the entire SHL with his constant off-ice bantering and threats about running people into the boards or tripping them on the ice the next time he sees them. In the S62 rookie server, Ben is constantly berating his fellow draft classmates about how he's gonna look for them on the ice the next time their two teams face (especially @mer @RashfordU @Vaxlare @G2019).

This is all just fun and playful banter at the end of the day as Ben Jammin is someone who takes it upon himself to bring others together by making them all band together to stop a common enemy which in this case would be Ben Jammin himself!

It's not the only the S62 draft class that Ben likes to go after, he is also a known pest for the Quebec City  Citadelles Edmonton Blizzard  Blizzard and the San Francisco pride

This is why Ben needs to put more TPE into strength as other players like to get their licks on him whenever the opportunity presents itself on the ice.

Hockey Prompt

If there's one thing I can rant about, it's the unwritten rules of sport. I hate them, so I love seeing a shit disturber show up. Not a dirty player per se, but a master of the dark arts that will get inside your head and fucking torment you. Anyone who's ever listened to me ramble knows that I am a passionate person and I love to see when players exist to get me riled up further, in a "I hate you, but god damn do I respect you as a troll" way. Sports aren't just the competition on the ice or field or whatever it's being played on, it's about the narrative being written, the story of a season, of teams, of a world that exists within itself. And every good narrative needs good characters with personality, even if that personality is just being absolutely fucking miserable to be around.

Ah the good old "game within the game" antics. It is obviously frustrating being on the receiving end of some of these things and a lot of times it is a risky line to tip-toe. However I do think there is some merit to it and if it didn't work, people would try it.

I am reminded of a story that Scotty Bowman, when he was head coach of the Red Wings, would have the opposing locker room freshly painted before a series so that the opposing team had to endure paint fumes while getting ready for the game. Another is calling the hotel rooms of the players in the middle of the night trying to disrupt their sleep.

There are countless stories of these kinds of antics and they will continue to be a part of the sport so long as humans are competing against one another. I can appreciate some good gamesmanship so long as it isn't crossing the line like involving family members or things of that unsavoury nature.

Player task:

William Salming is not a pest. He is very humble and shy European winger who likes to lead by his example on the ice instead of off the ice or verbally. His language skills aren't good enough to make opponent's angry so he let his teammates to do that kind of dirty things. Salming only cares about how he can help his team win on the ice by scoring points and prevent scoring opportunities. If someone tries to make Salming angry or distract him mentally, Salming usually doesn't answer everything. He just goes back to bench or then smiles little bit back to opponents who try to distract him. He answers them on the ice with his performances. That's it. That's the correct answer. Dirty talking isn't part of Salming's DNA and I could argue also Argonauts overally tries to focus on playing ice-hockey instead of small talking. But on the other hand it is good to have some verbally good players on the team and also Seattle has those.

Dwight Knight does not see himself as a pest, he see himself as someone who just likes to separate the body from the puck, doing things in the confines of the game. Other teams might see him as a pest though. For this season, the real pest on the team is Panda Panico. He has found a way to get under everyone's skin. He has nothing but grit and mean flowing through his veins. He is known for hacking the top of players feet at each faceoff. One time he hacked their leg from behind and they took a dive. If the game is deemed over and he is trying to get something brewing he will knowingly charge someone late after the play for the big hit. Some think he started using performance enhancing drugs and the mean is a side effect but he has passed all of the tests the league has brought at him. Dwight is not a big fan of dirty intentional play but knows it has it's place in the sport.

Hockey prompt

In general it comes with the sport, by that I mean chirping and being annoying as possible mentally. Whether its dumping water into gloves or just chirping all sorts of nonsense to your opponent, its part of the game by default. I mean, of course we get jealous about the other team being better or even other players being better so that is a natural outcome of jealousy. While doing it, its fun as hell to get on someones nerves but when its done to you, its one of the most irritating thing in existence. Usually when guys on my team start doing that I even encourage that mischievous behaviour, and naturally if someone would do that to my boys, I would go berserk and go on a hunting trip. Nobody knows if I will just land a massive hit or give a similar payback to the guy messing with my boys. Its fun and gets your mind off of the serious things for a tiny bit, but then again the serious things are the things that keep your payroll going.

Hockey Prompt

Thought I'd share an IRL example of someone who I had to deal with who was a pest during my time in Junior.  Our team had a General Manager / Head Coach who thought he was the be all and end all.  He was not good with managing relationships with players, and as Captain, I was often left annoyed, frustrated, and in an awkward spot by the actions and decisions he had taken.

Case and point, I had arranged with him and let him know that I would be arriving very close to the start of game time (plenty of time for me to get ready for the game but after the typical "early arrival" of the players).  This was so that I could spend a little extra time with my Father on his 50th birthday.  When I arrived to the rink that day, I walk into the dressing room and literally every player looks up at me and doesnt say a word.  I look over an see two teammates frantically trying to dry off my gear.  After asking what was going on, my teammates let me know that my coach/gm thought I deserved a punishment of my gear being thrown into the shower for arriving late, to show me that it was unacceptable that I would do that.

Safe to say I was happy to see him go a couple months later.  Seems like he burned a few bridges that season.
Best part for me, had my best game of the season that night, was a nice 5 point game for me.
Sometimes the pests you have to deal with were supposed to be on your side.

Hockey Prompt:

Videl is not an nonsense instigator, and she also doesn’t believe that instigating gets you places. In fact, she believes that stuff like chirping have no place in the league, ever since she was called a slur back in the J, any instigating would get you violently hit by Videl, but there would be no penalty because she paid off the refs. Most teams have told their players to "not target" Videl due to her violent nature, and that you risk getting injured when you attempt to insult her or throw her off her game. Toronto has enacted an "No Idiocy" policy, which bans pranks, foul play, and other forms of mischief. Toronto is strict on what it’s players can and cannot do, as a classy organization, they do sometimes allow a few chirps per game, but most of the time the organization would not let them due to what happened with Videl.
