Now that season 66 is in the books, I thought this would be the perfect time to take a final look back at the S66 SMJHL Draft Class! For this final evaluation we'll be focusing on every pick in the first two rounds. In other words, picks 1 through 28 will each be graded to see how they performed in comparison to one another over the course of their entire rookie seasons. In addition, we'll also grade the GM's to see how their picks turned out in relation to the position from which they chose to select them.
To try and create a playing field as level as possible, we'll be using a metric that takes into account both offensive and defensive statistics so as to not favor one group over the other. That way we can try and give everyone a fair shake no matter how they chose to build their player. The power rating formula is as follows: (P(+/-)+/-)+HGR+FF% = RSPR. In plain English it's Points (plus or minus) plus or minus, plus Highest Game Rating plus Fenwick For Percentage equals Rookie Season Power Rating. Points and plus/minus are fairly self explanatory, while highest game rating means the highest rating of the three, no matter if that's overall GR, offensive OGR, or defensive DGR. Last but not least, Fenwick For Percentage is an advanced stat similar to Corsi except it only calculates actual shots. Which means FF% represents the cumulative total of team shots for and against while any given player is on the ice. With the preamble out of the way, let's begin with a graphical recap of the first two rounds: Now then, let's rank all 28 players according to their Rookie Season Power Rating: - - - Top 25 Percent RSPR NO. NAME 222.0 - |01| - Alexi Piastri - 217.1 - |02| - Paul Peterson - 194.4 - |03| - Theodor Larsson - 192.6 - |04| - Brendan Laroux - 191.1 - |05| - Meta Knight - 188.8 - |06| - Isaac Forty-One - 183.4 - |07| - Daniel Swift - - - - Top 25 Percent - - - Top 50 Percent 181.2 - |08| - Antonio Flusso - 176.3 - |09| - Jack St. Clair - 174.5 - |10| - Shea O'Connall - 168.3 - |11| - Pawter Meowski - 163.9 - |12| - Diablo Rose - 162.3 - |13| - Hodor - 158.5 - |14| - Nevek Kove - - - - Top 50 Percent - - - Bottom 50 Percent 156.8 - |15| - Tam Kove - 156.5 - |16| - Bohdan Jarovsky - 149.5 - |17| - Bobby McGinnis - 137.6 - |18| - Sean Davies - 134.2 - |19| - Kyle Murray - 125.3 - |20| - Terry Leviathan - 123.5 - |21| - Axel Kirby - - - - Bottom 50 Percent - - - Bottom 25 Percent 122.6 - |22| - Brennan Kennedy III - 103.9 - |23| - Rasmus Bergling - 89.8 - |24| - Pope Coswi Jr - 78.7 - |25| - Jacques Hammer - 75.0 - |26| - D Jobin - 74.8 - |27| - Jon Bell - 71.1 - |28| - Neal Newland - - - - Bottom 25 Percent Now then , let's move on to an analysis of where each pick placed in our power ratings. We do this to establish several things, such as which players moved up or dropped the most, and which GM's got the most value from their picks. (i.e. Who won the draft): 1) The number one pick D Jobin was taken by Anchorage and finished 26th. A drop of 25 points. 2) Second overall was Theodor Larsson, selected by Yukon and finishing 3rd. A drop of just 1. 3) The third pick went to Vancouver who choose Meta Knight. Meta finished 5th. A drop of 2. 4) Kelowna choose Jacques Hammer 4th overall. Hammer finished 25th for a drop of 19 points. 5) The fifth pick went to Great Falls who opted for Bobby McGinnis. Bobby came in at 17th for a drop of 12. 6) Jack St. Clair was drafted 6th by Quebec, and finished with the 9th best power rating. A drop of 3. 7) 7th overall was Carolina's time to select Kyle Murray. Kyle finished 19th for a drop of 12. 8) Maine stepped up and claimed Pawter Meowski with the 8th pick. Pawter finished 11th for a drop of 3. 9) Pick 9 was Hodor who headed off to Regina, Hodor placed 13th for a drop of 4. 10) Completing the top ten was Isaac Forty-One, selected by Colorado and finishing 6th to move up 4! 11) Nevada tabbed Alexi Piastri 11th overall, only to see him finish first for a powerful gain of 10! 12) The 12th pick went to Quebec who selected Tam Kove. Flusso ranks 8th for a big gain of 7! 16) The 16th selection went to Anchorage who picked Sean Davies. Sean finished 18th for a drop of 2. 17) Jon Bell went 17th to Kelowna, but only managed to place 27th, resulting in a drop of 10. 18) Great Falls made Neal Newland the 18th pick. Unfortunately Neal ranks 28th for a drop of 10. 19) Axel Kirby went 19th to Carolina before ranking 21st in the rookie class. A drop of just 2. 20) Brendan Laroux was chosen by Regina with the 20th pick. Brendan soared all the way to #4 for a huge gain of 16! 21) Twenty first was the landing spot for Bohdan Jarovsky and the Detroit Falcons.
