In our first edition of the Yukon deep dive series, we are going to take a look at the Malamutes S68 draft class. While our second deep dive will talk more about how these rookies perform, the point of this article is really to introduce the new players, see where they came from and how they got here. Let's start off by taking a look at the malamutes draft pick ownership heading into the draft.

Round 1

Pick 9
Pick 14

Round 2

Pick 21
Pick 23

Round 3

no picks

Round 4

Pick 50
Pick 52

Looking at the list of picks it's clear that some pick management has been going on on the malamutes side, though we aren't here today to dive into quite that side of things. Instead we'll take a look at how they were used and who they bring to the roster, starting with our first rounders.

Round 1 Pick 9 - Edvin Kalberg

If Edvin Kalberg could be described as one thing, it's massive. This boy comes in at 6 foot 7 and 243 pounds, making him easily one of the biggest players in the league - and he isn't done growing either. His biggest strengths on the ice are definitely on the defensive side of things, as he has smjhl ready gap control and positioning. That alone makes his size all the more useful. He doesn't excell particularly at anything offensive but let's be honest, he doesn't have to. Expect blocks, hits and all around sound defensive play from Kalberg in his first season.

Round 1 Pick 14 - Jason Robinson

To end the first round of the draft, the Malamutes brought in another defender who holds a slightly different skillset in Jason Robinson. While Robinson is still defensively responsible, he doesn't have the frame Kalberg does nad comes out at the other end a little less effective because of it. That said he isn't a slouch defensively and what he lacks he more than makes up for in his offensive potential. Robinson is an elite passer and reads the play at a very high pace. It will take some time to adjust to the SMJHL, but once he does Robinson should be an offensive force from the blue line.

Round 2 pick 21 - Andrei Nikitin

Early enough in the 2nd round the Malamutes found themselves on the clock and this time looking to add a forward to the crop. They did just that by drafting Nikitin, a reliable two-way forward who doesn't particularly excell at any given area, but doesn't have any glaring weaknesses either. He's a true swiss army knife that can fit up and down the lineup for the Malamutes, so expect to see him playing a variety of special teams units in the near future.

Round 2 pick 23 - Bandit Heeler

Rounding out the roster positionally, Bandit Heeler will step in immediately as the Malamutes starting goalie. At 6 foot 5 and 225 pounds, Heeler is a big body in the net who relies heavily on his stellar positioning to make his saves. While we do expect his reflexes and agility to grow over time, he hasn't seemed to have many problems performing in other leagues. As a teenager he was always a top goalie and it will be exciting to see how that translates

Round 4 pick 50 - Bowie Benning

Unfortunately for Benning and the Malamutes, he was nowhere to be found on draft day and has yet to present himself to a team practice.

Round 4 pick - Peter Mollinek

Mollinek is another player who has yet to present himself to a team practice and seems to be another miss for the Malamutes, though we were late in the draft anyways.

That concludes our Deep Dive for today. As we can see, the 4th round doesn't seem too promising for the Malamutes, but luckily they had 4 picks before that and they should all pay off. Tune in next time to see how the rookies and the Malamutes start their season!
