These are the players i think should be in the competition for MVP award this year.
Kale Salad plays for Maine Timber and has been one of the most dominant players this year having scored 36 goals and 39 assists for 75 points in 50 games, Which means he leads in points and goals. His shooting percentage is also 23.5% for 153 shots.
Joel Farfalle plays for Yukon Malamutes and has been standing on his head this year recording a S% of 0.915. Showing why there a strong goalie to have.
Ekaterina Valieva plays for Kelowna Knights and is leading is assists with an astonishing 43 assists they also have 22 goals to give them 65 points in 51 games just remarkable performance by Valieva.
Hai Nam Hoang plays for Great Galls Grizzlies and has been doing an amazing job this year and is competing for most points right now they have 24 goals 40 assists for 64 points in 49 games
Bohdan Jarovsky plays the reigning champs Detroit Falcons and they’ve been a force to reckon with again this year going 36-9-3. Bohdan has played amazing recording 25 goals 42 assists for 67 points in 48 games it’s an unreal performance.
Amazing performances by all the players this year makes it so hard to choose.

The Ideen Fallah Trophy for MVP as decided by the Awards Committee is the most coveted individual award in the SMJHL, as such winning this award greatly increases the prospect of being drafted into the SHL (if not already). As there is a learning curve, even in the SMJHL, the usual winners of the Ideen Fallah Trophy are 3 or 4 season veterans of the SMJHL, and this year it seems that it is no different.
Leading the race for the Ideen Fallah Trophy so far are 3 veterans of the SMJHL, each with at least 3 seasons under their belt, lets break down their stats and accolades so far this season.
1. Cale Salad - Cale is having a career year so far in the SMJHL. In their 3rd season with the Maine Timber they have put up a league leading 75 points (36-39) in 50 games played. Already eclipsing their previous years points total (70) in 16 fewer games. Cale Salad has been on a tear all year, wreaking havoc in the league with their 36 goals, 5 more than the second place Brennan Kennedy III. The Ideen Fallah Trophy is Cale's to lose, but at this scoring pace, it will be hard to take it away from them.
2. Bohdan Jarovsky - In a close, but still distant second place, Bohdan currently sits second in points with 67 (25-42). With a different playstyle mainly focusing on assists, there is still a chance for Bohdan to catch up to Cale Salad in the MVP Trophy race. Bohdan has 2 games in hand with 48 games played, there is still lots of hockey to be played so never say never.
3. Ekaterina Valieva & Bastien Primeau - Both Ekatrina and Bastien are tied for 3rd in points in the league with 65 each. Ekatrina leads the league in assists with 43, and Bastien has a more even stat line with 29 goals and 36 assists. Ekaterina has 51 games played and Bastien has 48, so there is wiggle room for Bastien to overtake Ekaterina in the voting if he make a big impact in the games in hand. However, both have quite a bit of work to do to catch up to Cale Salad.
When looking the league for MVP front runners I think there is one choice as the clear leader and then another level of players with great season so far.
Starting off we have Cale Salad of the Maine Timber. Cale leads the league in goals with 36 which is currently 5 up on second place. He's not just a goal scorer as he has also added 39 assists which places him 4th in the league. This gives him a total of 75 points which is first in the league and 8 points up on second please. He is currently shooting 23.53% which is a fantastic rate.
Next we have Ekaterina Valieva of the Kelowna Knights. Ekaterina leads the league in assists with 43 and has also tallied 22 goals for a total of 65 points tied for third in the league. Ekaterina averages over 19 minutes per game and has 59.4% success rate in face offs.
Jeff Newman is also having another fantastic season. His 29 wins leads the league by 4 wins and his goals against average is 2.31 good enough for fourth. Where he is really impressing is in shutouts leading the league with 10 which is 5 more ahead of anyone else. What may hurt him is his save percentage as it's currently below .900.
Honourable mentions should go to these players who could also garner a fair bit of consideration: Bohdan Jarovsky (DET), Pawter Meowski (MET), and Nash Topalo (DET)
Cale Salad has been a dominant force in the juniors hockey league this season, consistently showing why he deserves to be named MVP. His incredible speed, coupled with his exceptional stickhandling and scoring abilities, have made him a nightmare for opposing defenses. He leads the league in both goals and points, and his impact on the ice is evident every time he steps onto the rink.
Despite facing tough competition, Salad has proved to be a reliable and consistent player, always delivering when his team needs him the most. He has a positive attitude and is a great team player, always working hard to improve his game and help his team succeed. This type of dedication is what sets him apart from other players and makes him a strong contender for the MVP award.
Bastien Primeau and Bohdan Jarovsky, are both left-wingers that should be the runner ups for MVP. Both players have been crucial to their teams' success, using their exceptional speed and skill to score crucial goals and set up their teammates.
Bastien Primeau has been a dominant force on the ice this season, scoring over 20 goals and racking up numerous assists. He has been a key player in his team's high-scoring offense, using his speed and stickhandling ability to create scoring opportunities for his teammates. Bohdan Jarovsky, on the other hand, has been a reliable presence also. He has been instrumental in helping his team maintain control of the puck and has been able to contribute to both ends of the ice. He has also been a great leader, always motivating his teammates to give their all.
In conclusion, Cale Salad's impressive statistics, positive attitude, and impact on the game make him the clear choice for MVP. Meanwhile, Primeau and Jarovsky's remarkable performances in their respective positions make them strong contenders for runner-up honors.
When it comes to the MVP race I feel like at the top of it all it’s going to be Cale Salad and it’s not remotely close. League leader in goals and points while being 4th in assists, they have 8 points up on second on the list and appears that it will only continue to get larger. On Detroit you have two people who could be dark horse candidates but might split some votes in Bohdan Jarovsky and Bastien Primeau. They’re at 67 and 65 points respectfully, but both being on Detroit might make it harder for one of them to pull ahead from the other. I want to give a dark horse MVP nomination to Joel Farfalle on Yukon. Playing goalie in the minors is never easy, but to have a .915 save percentage and a GAA of 2.58 while leading their team in starts, that deserves some love and recognition from the MVP voting community.
What is an MVP? Most Valuable Player. The player most valuable for his or her team. For me that doesn't (necessarily) have to be someone scoring most goals or having most points in a season, especially on teams that have multiple high-end players, because they're all 'kind of' valuable, but how do you define who is most valuable then? Especially for the whole league in comparison? I feel like context shouldn't be ignored, at least not completely.
In no particular order for me:
Ekaterina Valieva (KEL): The team's first line center currently has 69 points with 26 goals and 43 assists. 20 of those goals were even strength and 9(!) have been game winning goals. We also can see an impressive 59.6% face-off percentage here. The team has 3.44 goals per game, but Valieva has 3.7 GF/60 (also the highest on the team).
Cale Salad (MET) It's difficult to ignore someone who has 81 points (40G/41A), at the moment 14 more than the next player on the team and 29 points more than the third player. Someome here does seem to score a lot, including 11 (league-leading) GWG.
Bandit Heeler (GFG): I would like to bring in a goalie here as well. Because why not? GFG have currently the second lowest goals against in the league while only being 7th in the standings. Heeler has player 37 games, so is a clear starter on the team (other teams have a more even splits with a 1A/1B system), and is in the top 5 among starters for wins, GAA, GSAA, SO, SV% (and leader in OTL with 4). All of that with "only" 343 TPE applied and not having the scoring support e.g. someone like Detroit's Newman has.
With just over 10 games to go, the season is winding down and everybody is buckling up for the playoffs. One thing although, is not slowing down as the season ends, and that’s the MVP race. I have 5 players I’d like to take a look at for league MVP.
The first name that popped into my head was obvious, because you see his name every time you open up the league index. Cale Salad has been awesome this year, his Maine Timber are sitting 2nd in the league and a lot of that is due to the amazing play of Mr. Salad. Cale has already passed his career high in goals and points, last year potting 27 to this years 40 already, as well as last years 70 points to this years 81 already. With 14 games to go it looks like Cale could finish with 102 points on the year!
The next name is just as obvious to me, and for the same reason. Jeff Newman is a hot goalie, except he’s not like a pan of fresh cracked eggs in the morning hot, he’s the surface of the damned sun hot. In a season where only one of the top ten goalies holds a save percentage above .900%, Jeff has managed 11 shutouts! There is much to be said about the fact that Jeff is having the worst year of his career when it comes to SV%. Last year Jeff had 49 wins, only 9 losses, a .910% and 5 shutouts, This year he’s already at 31 wins (leading the league and putting his team in 1st).
Next on our list may be less obvious to some, Jacques Hammer for the Kelowna Knights has really shown a lot in his game before heading to the big time next year. His teammate Ekaterina Valieva has been flying high with points this year potting 69 in 54, but I believe there is slightly more value in Mr. Hammers game, he has 57 in 54, putting him on pace to end with 69 (nice) points. Good enough for his best career season, he’s likely to end with 31 goals, good enough for his second best season after scoring 36 last year. Jacques has a unique style of play that allows him to hold the puck for long periods of time, because of this he is second on his team for shots against while on ice, this is a big reason for Kelowna being in 3rd place.
Next I’d like to highlight one of the best defenders in the league, Nevek Kove of Quebec City. Nevek currently sits at 23 points in 51 GP, putting him on pace for 29, a career high. Nevek has had a very effective season putting them at
3.3 GF/p60, this is one of the big reasons The Citadelles are on pace to finish 4th in the standings.
And last but not least is another high level defender from the Great Falls Grizzlies, We have Chris Valentine. No I’m not just picking him because it’s valentine’s day, but it is very convenient. Chris has already surpassed his previous career-high point total with 26 this year, he finished his rookie year with 24, and he’s on pace to finish with 33 points this year. Valentine has one of the best PDO% sitting at 104.4%, capping an extremely effective year.
There are three players that I have my eyes on for MVP of the 69th season of the SMJHL.
1. Cale Salad - Any time a player leads the league in goals and points, he should be in the conversation for league MVP. He has Maine first in the Atlantic Division and has a 14 point lead on the second place scorer on the team. 60 of his 81 points are 5 on 5, which is very impressive and adds to his MVP like season.
2. Jeff Newman - The potential goaltender of the year has the Detroit Falcons at the top of the league. He has 11 shutouts and one of the best goals against average amongst the other keepers. Something going against him may be that his save percentage isn't that good, and there are a lot of good players on Detroit already.
3. Ekaterina Valieva - Leading the third place Kelowna Knights in scoring after a breakout year, Valieva is a faceoff ace and has 9 GWG, coming up clutch when it is needed the most.
Bohdan Jarovsky
Bohdan is an essential part in the league leading Detroit team. He is the league leader in assists, and only second to Cale Salad in points. Besides being the Catalyst to one of the best offenses in the league, Bohdan is also a strong defender, who looks to land hits and win possessions for his team. Admittedly Bohdan isn't as prolific a scorer as Cale or other MVP candidates but in my eyes, the team success combined with his defensive skill set make up for that.
Hai Nam Hoang
Hoang is a great pass first forward who has been rising up the assist ladder during the season. His big knock is that he isn't at the same level as other MVP candidates scoring wise but considering his team's moderate success and the fact that on his team he is still the highest scorer, I think it becomes clear he is more than essential to the team's success. I believe that makes him the clear-cut favorite if you value impact on a roster over team performance.
Cale Salad
The front-runner in MVP contention, goals and points. The Timber are a great team and Salad is one of the main ingredients for success, especially offensively. I personally believe he might be a bit weaker of a defender and passer as other candidates, but only marginally and his offensive production more than makes up for it.
I think at this point its going to be between Jaxon Markstrom and Cale Salad.
As far as goalies go, Jeff Newman definitely has the more impressive season but he is also playing behind a stacked team so I would argue that Markstrom is having the more impressive season and is doing a lot more for his team on an indivial basis than Newman. Although he has only played in half as many games as Newman. And giving a backup the MvP might rub people the wrong way. But I enjoy chaos.
Cale Salad is having a total bomb of a season and is the realistic choice for MvP at this point. with 9 goals up on the second highest scorer and a massive 87 points. I think the MvP is his to loose at this point as maine continues their streak of being an absolute wagon of a team that produces some of the best scorers in the league.
The season is already close to completion. Talk begins about who exactly from the hockey players would be valuable enough to give it a top player award. I'm definitely not going to be that very original and take the easiest route, I think for the most part, the winner of this MVP award is exactly one of the attackers because it's these players who make the most of the match fates. With his performance this season, a number of players are delighted. AMONG THE top 4 are representatives of two teams, the Detroit Falcons and Maine Timber. And these players are:
Cale Salad
Bohdan Jarovsky
Bastien Primeau
Pawter Meowski
Ekaterina Valieva and others also mention on their heels, but I think it's Cale Salad who deserves to be MVP this season, and if he's still going to get good results with the team at the end of the season itself, then I think that's all going to happen that way.
When looking at the players in the running for MVP, it's hard not to say Cale Salad of the Timber is the clear leader for this race. Cale is currently sitting at 43 goals and 44 assists, for a league leading total of 87 points, 11 points ahead of Bohdan Jarovsky of the Falcons (although Jarovsky has a game in hand; 12 point night incoming for him?) who sits in second place. Not only is Cale a leader in points. His +/- of +31 is 6th in the league, showing a strong proficiency at both ends of the ice. It would take a major (and I mean MAJOR) fall off for the remainder of the season for him not to be the bonafide MVP, in my opinion. A case could potentially be made for the aforementioned Jarovsky, as his assist total of 49 sits highest in the league, showing a strong team first mentality that could be important to consider for choosing a player most valuable to their team. Jeff Newman would be my pick if it had to go to a goalie, as 34 wins in 46 games played is no joke. However, with a save % of 0.896, the argument could be made that these wins have come from Detroit's dominant offense more than his sheer ability.
