S69 PT #4: Hockey School February 19th @ 11:59 PM (PST)

Creative Prompt
The Tomas Lind hockey school is mostly focused on the physical aspects of the game. The students will go through tasks that involve developing both their upper and lower body strength by doing multiple skating drills both with and without additional weights added on to their body. They will also participate in a form of "battering ram" exercise where they will try and push a heavy object from the slot, mimicking the opposition player in front of the net. After these two workouts, the next activity the participants are going to do is an ice bath to let the muscles recuperate and grow stronger. Of course they are also provided with vast amounts of food that comes with the fee, to prepare both before and after each training session. This camp is not going to cost them a lot as it's a vital part of the game that needs to be nurtured better than it currently is.

I plan for my hockey school is have some drills possibly. I would like the students to have as much as they can which the best thing for them. I think that a game is possible or like a scrimmage game or two in there would be fun. And let's enjoy talking and having a good time together as we know we want to have some friends as well as some good times for our students. I want us to go to this school like we are the fun teachers at the school that talk to you and train you to be the best that you can be as you try to be a pro. As I wished I had the same thing for myself going up. And I want to have this class be the best class that you have ever been to in all your life. I want to say that it is fun and I would recommend it to all parents.

PLAYER PROMPT - Backstory prompt! Since we're talking about hockey schools, did your player every go to one? How did your player learn the game?

Written Task: Tell me a bit about how your player got started in the game. Where did they hear of it? Who did they learn it from? Did they know that they wanted to be in the SHL right away, or was a long road to finding hockey? Were they a natural or did it take a lot of practice? (150+ words)

Grogu got started in hockey because playing hockey is much like being a Jedi. When it was discovered that Grogu could use the force, he was sent to an isolated planet int he far reaches of the Outer Rim, where the predominant barbaric species of humanoids played a game on this frozen world, putting knives on their feet and skating around the ice hitting a frozen piece of poo with sticks, and also each other. Knowing that Grogu was going to have to face many enemies in the future, his Jedi trainers taught him this game but gave him a light saber instead of a hockey stick. It made him more powerful but also more dangerous. Grogu became very proficient at this game, he was one of the fastest players but also because he could use the Force, he was able to steal the puck away from his opponents and confuse the goalie to score more goals. It is a bit of an unfair advantage, but it's not technically against the rules, so he gets away with it. It is unknown whether these hockey skills he has learned will be of use in trying to reclaim Mandalore in Season 3 of The Mandalorian, but it starts on March 1st so you wonlt have to wait too long to find out!

Player Prompt:

Hockey isn't huge in Denmark, but growing up in a huge city like Copenhagen, you are bound to run into all kinds of things, and hockey was something Nikolai Skovgaard was around a fair bit at an early age. His father was a big fan of the local club, the Herlev Eagles of the Danish Metal Ligaen, and Nikolai was obsessed with the sport right away. He was always looking for chances to get out on the ice and play some hockey, even if it was something like field hockey. He spent a lot of time as a teenager playing in a local youth league, where he dominated the local scene with his smooth skating abilities. Nikolai heard from a local sports agent about this league in north america called the simluation hockey league, and thought he would be good enough to try and get into that league. After some paperwork and few on ice workouts, he found himself drafted by the Quebec City Citadelles and the rest was history.

PLAYER PROMPT

Jimmy Wagner first wanted to play hockey at the age of six after seeing it played on TV. His dad worked overtime to get him some skates for his seventh birthday and he spent every minute he could learning how to skate in the slightly too large boots. Soon enough he was playing with some older local kids in Austria and they asked their dads to get Jimmy on the team with them. Most of his hockey education came from time spent on those youth teams growing up and watching clips on TV or the computer - the Wagner family didn't have much when he and Sara were growing up so learning opportunities until the two of them made it to the states were scarce. Once in the states and on the Kraken, Wagner finally started to learn more about the tactical and technical sides of the game, honing his physical talents into something more complete.

Sophie Bordeleau wants to give back to her community for how they supported her in her journey to the SHL, so her hockey school would be aimed at helping more girls get introduced to hockey and learn the sport. The hockey camp would be aimed at 6-10 year olds, and the focus would be on just having fun and learning the skills of the game. There would be plenty of fun ice time with minigames to let the kids just play while improving their hockey skills, as well as activities with the goal of getting these girls to feel confident about themselves as they grow up. Sophie is all too happy to hype up the kids on the ice and keep things light and fun. She's partnered with a local community centre to provide the camp at a low cost to these children; getting into hockey can be so expensive and she's a millionaire so she has the money to help cover costs. The goal is to lower the barrier to entry and provide exposure to hockey to kids who normally might not get it, so every bit helps.

It was really just coincidence of getting involved with hockey; I grew up around a lot of football and baseball fans, but hockey just seemed to push me in the right direction. Never had a lot of interest in football in particular, although I did end up playing baseball for a short time as a child. There was something about the uniqueness of hockey that really pulled me in and eventually led to me playing the game itself. The speed of it was really exhilarating as well; something like football was just too slow of a pace for me. My brother really helped pave the way for me as far as growing into the game. It was a bit of a long road for me, getting into professional hockey, but it always felt like the skill set was there from the beginning. The nurturing and growth along the way really made the path to the SHL easier than it could've been.

LARGEST PUNISHMENT IN SHL HISTORY

To create an event for kids to learn about hockey I’d first want to set the atmosphere and environment of this program to be friendly, collaborative, and most importantly to not be permissive of any behavior from anyone.  It’s known how the culture of youth hockey is “toxic” to put it incredibly lightly, and I would therefore have all of the adults who help in this program be vetted to the best of my ability and create an environment where any “misbehavior” is reacted to accordingly.  The worst thing you can have for this program is for the kids to not enjoy it or worse.

For the teaching, I would help greatly in this aspect but would allow the fundamental planning and lessons be crafted by actual youth hockey coaches that are well experienced in teaching kids.  I would emphasize the above points of a good and nurturing environment for the kids to learn over pure mechanical teaching, since the point of these programs is for the kids to have fun, not as a factory line for professional talent.

Written Task: What kind of fun and exciting activities do you plan for your hockey school? What skills and lessons do you want the kids to take home with them? How do you structure the whole experience? What does it cost, if anything? Is this a hardcore hockey skills experience, or something that's just meant to be a fun opportunity to meet an SHL player? (150+ words)

Egli is a firm believer that hockey starts and ends with conditioning - and as a sheep farmers son he thinks these want-to-be snot nosed suckers should start where he did. School starts at 5:00am sharp, if you aren't there it isn't Egli's problem, your tuition stays the same. These kids obviously know what a bag skate is, but what they aren't ready for is a bag run - bags of feed that is. Each kid runs to the top of a 200ft 65 degree incline with a 50lb bag of feed on their shoulders.

Then, they groom their sheep. Each kid gets a sheep to care for during the duration of their schooling.

Them sheep's also need water, two buckets per scrub. And don't you spill none of Emil Egli's water. You spill some water, you run a mile. You drop a bucket, you run a mile. You come back with one bucket, Emil Egli will break his foot off in your John Brown hind parts, and then you run a mile.

Matsmith Soderberg Tremblay is setting up a hockey camp for the kids of Chicago. He knows how important these things are, as he was once a kid who attended a Chicago hockey camp. The hockey school will have two layers to it, it will both have more for fun elements, as well as elements for people who are more serious about hockey and learning the game. One big element that the school will have is nutrition and off ice training. If you have been following Matsmith at all, you would know how important that element of learning is. A lot of focus on eating and training right to get your body in peak conditions. A fun element for the hockey school is having a scrimmage using SHL players. Each team will get one pro on their team and they will scrim with the other teams. The "Pro" has to use a goalie stick and can't shoot on the net as per the rules, to make it more fair.

Growing up in Norway, a country far better known for its prowess in skiing compared to hockey, Andreas wasn't inoculated with the sport of hockey from a young age like some other children from more hockey crazed countries would be. Growing up, Andreas' primary sport was football but was eventually introduced to hockey through the success of the Norwegian national team, which emerged as a hockey powerhouse in the season 30s. This team of plucky Norwegians, led by SHL superstars such as Chris York and Chester Cunningham, shocked the hockey world and captured the hearts of their nation. Andreas, inspired by these players, begged his parents to sign him up for hockey, and Andreas was immediately hooked. He emulated the physical two way style of his heroes, and has carried that same style of play with him throughout his career as he first moved to North America to play in the SMJHL and then to Texas as he made his mark in the SHL.
