The 06 Hurricanes are what I call schrodinger's good team. They were hardly a Cinderella - they actually won 52 games; in the 2022-23 NHL only Boston won more. That regular season gets underrated a lottttt. But they made the playoffs harder than they had to be (the Sabres basically had an AHL defense for much of the conference final, and the Oilers were a mid as fuck team that started Jussi Markkanen six games in a Cup final). Now, was it a lightning-in-a-bottle one-year thing, yeah. But that was a good team. Not to mention that, if all that matters is the deep playoff runs...he made the Finals with the Flyers and Predators too, and while he did lose both, one was against a burgeoning dynasty and one was against a team going for a repeat. And I think with the Rangers where they are they did not want to take a risky choice.

I agree with "there needs to be more variety in coaches," but it's not a good example imo. Roy is a great QMJHL coach, but the Avs were significantly better after he dipped (16-17 was kind of a punt bc he bailed so late, so if we skip that they went from 82 points in Roy's last year to 95 in Bednar's first full one, a year that also saw the Avs deal their top scorer from Roy's last year). Maybe it was the wrong situation, I'd be willing to give him another chance, but I think people get lost in the luster of the name and that one year the Avs had a good record with him (which resulted in a first round exit against Minnesota, and it was a year where even people at the time knew it was kinda fluky).

There are plenty of experienced assistants, or coaches at the college and AHL level, and even European coaches that have basically been left to rot as well. But everyone's on the Roy hype because he won the Memorial Cup and is a hockey legend coaching in one of the CHL's biggest markets.
