1. Lemon +3 TPE 11. Matiss is always ready to go for competition whether that is going against other players in the SHL or his own teammates. When Matiss is on the ice he is playing for the logo on the front of the jersey and does not care who is on the other team. He will always go hard, no matter the game, and no matter who is standing across the ice from him. During the game it will just be good hard competitive hockey. For Matiss, he always wants to put out the best hockey that he can, and especially in the IIHF where he wants to represent his country and bring home a gold medal. Now Matiss will still be friendly with his own teammates outside of the ice rink before and after the game but as soon as the puck drops, he is going to give it all he’s got, and play the best hockey that he can. +3 TPE 12. My favorite part of the final series was that overall it was pretty competitive and all of the games were fairly close, which is pretty nice to see. Buffalo won the championship because of their goaltending. Their goalie came out as having the most saves and highest save percentage in the entire playoffs, which gave them a huge advantage when going into the final series. If Buffalo’s goaltender doesn’t step up, I don’t think they have a chance at winning the championship this year. Now on the other hand as far as Winnipeg goes, I am not sure what they could have done better as far as offense goes because they had the top goalscorer and the top two point scorers in the playoffs. What Winnipeg struggled with was goaltending with their goalie coming in at number 10 in save percentage in the playoffs and being outside the top five in goals against average. I think if goaltending was just slightly better that Winnipeg could have won the championship. +2 TPE

2d. I think that Buffalo Will win the cup final, and its due to the simple fact that as im writing this they already won the cup. It wouldnt have been my actual guess but here we are. I’m sure we will be seeing Winnepeg back around here soon so who knows what will happen next time 5. I think it is obvious in this scenario that a god bear would win any day of the week, buffalo are very highly regarded in indigenous culture. But a god bear doesnt regard those regards. I would put my money on any celestial entity in reality because what is the buffalo going to do. The arena and rules are irrelevant, but I assume it would be a fight to the death which seems kind of intense. Maybe its just like a slap fight or a tickle fight idk. I think we should take a second to say that if it was a celestial bear vs a celestial buffalo. Or even just a bear vs a buffalo, obviously the bear would still win, its nature, its science, its fact, I dont know what to tell you. Since the game is different I think we need to change the trophy as well, instead of a physical trophy it should be more experiential. Like a signature grimace birthday meal from mcdonalds.

2. Written, up to 4 TPE - Grab Bag: Pick up to 4 Challenge Cup related topics to write about! Each topic is worth 1 TPE. Each answer must be 50+ words. a. Winnipeg has put together an impressive streak of Challenge Cup Finals appearances, but has no hardware to show for their dominance in the west so far. What do the Aurora have to do differently to get over the hump this year? Winnipeg has a very solid lineup, and its been proven many times before. But when they hit the finals they get crushed, and to me its because they don't play enough solid defense. When your in the Finals, your playing the other best team in the whole league, and their bound to be great. but if you shut down all of their offense, what can they do? most of all, Winnipeg has the experience in these types of games, so all they need to do is take a breath and play like they have all season long. b. Buffalo, fresh off a rebuild, crushed their way through the first two rounds of these playoffs after coming in as a wildcard, scoring two consecutive sweeps against two of the best teams in the East. Have the Stampede convinced you? If so, what sold you? They have the talent to win this, with all of these young kids, but its going to be a tough series, considering all of the experience Winnipeg has in these situations. My money goes on the Aurora on this one, but I would say Buffalo puts up a fight. It will be a great series. c. Two very different teams took two very different routes to the Cup Final: which of them impressed you more? Why? Buffalo way more. Winnipeg has proven they are a great team for so many season now, just they don't perform in the finals. Buffalo on the other hand, coming in on the Wildcard, they played and beat some of the best teams in the league, a miracle coming off of a rebuild. d. If it ain't broke don't fix it: Who you got? Who wins? Why? WINNIPEG! Oh god Winnipeg deserves it so much. Being the best team in the league for so many season, the regular season at least, they have so much experience in games like this I am sure they have this one in the bag. Yet again, I don't count Buffalo out, considering the past few instances in the finals Winnipeg has had. 3. Written, 3 TPE, Guess Who's Back (150 words min.) To say Winnipeg has been offensively dominant in their playoff run so far is needlessly charitable to their opponents. Lias Ekholm-Gunnarsson has *twenty nine points* in sixteen playoff games. Mikko Rashford has *twenty seven*. However, Rebecca Montaigne has a 0.888 save percentage for this run. Can Winnipeg's absurd offense finally get them over the hump, or do they need to patch up their defense if they want to outlast the Upstate Upstarts? I touched on this briefly before. Winnipeg hands down has the best, if not then second best offense in the league. Its greatly proven by the two players you mentioned above, Lias Ekholm-Gunnarsson and Mikko Rashford. They put up absurd numbers this offseason, and good for them. But can it lead the whole team to the highly sought out championship? Not on its own. Winnipeg has to play a defensive game, help their goalie Rebecca Montague out a little bit, and the defense has to step it up to a whole different level here. The offense will definitely help get them where they need to be, but they CANNOT. I stress it yet again. CANNOT win on purely offense. And for me its been proven in prior seasons. They make it all the way to the finals, but are crushed by another team who knows how they play, and knows how to stop them. Defense, and solid at that is the only way Winnipeg pulls out with a Cup this season.

I wish a championship week where I am mentionned would be for better reasons but I appreciate the nod. THe buffallos surprisingly won in my opinion and it again shows that there are no clear guarantees that stronger teams will win the cup, it's all played on the ice. We are at a point where winnipeg has been favorites for a few season and still can't win it all. I said multiple times that they don't need to make changes, just to ride their success wave but now after so many appearances without winning it all it feels like a chang ecould be welcomed, maybe tactical changes. Code: 2. Written, up to 4 TPE - Grab Bag: Pick up to 4 Challenge Cup related topics to write about! Each topic is worth 1 TPE. Each answer must be 50+ words. a. I think the aurora has to keep pilling up on good players as much as they can, one day the flood gates will open and they will get their championship but as long as their cup window remains open, they have to add add add players and fill that roster with quality players. A tactical adjustment to their opponents could help as well, at the cost of individual successes maybe for the star players. b. As a procrastinator of course they have convinced me. Their push and finals were impressive and out of the blue. I didn't expect them to win and get this far, let alone win the cup but I guess this is encouraging for every aspiring team to recall that making it to the final dance is not reserved to the most stacked teams, that hard work can get you far as well. c. The winnipeg serie of finals appearances is very impressive, however the underdog run of buffalo is even better, especially now that I know they won it all. THe east is a slaughterhouse with many strong teams and being sent to the finals as an underdog is impressive. The aurora needs to win a final soon and I'm sure it will happen but until then they are just that, appearances. When I am playing for team canada, or at least when i did play for team canada (20 seasons in a row on the roster by the way, not a big deal, 4 gold medals) I am not easing up one might. Honestly if I think about it I might be playing even harder than I do during the regular season. Single elimination rounds working up towards the gold medal? I am leaving everything I have out on the ice, every single game grinding for the gold. If one of my teammates is coming up on a contract year, maybe I even hit them harder, have them take a lesser contract so we can build a more successful team the following year. I am doing whatever it takes to win. I wish I could have gotten my fifth medal, and if I was able to keep my spot on the roster for another 2 seasons, all things staying the same, I would have. It sucks to go dry on golds 10 seasons in a row, with all 4 of my golds being won within 5 seasons, but it is what it is. Code: 12. Written, 2 TPE - The Procrastinator Special! (100 words min.) Congrats to the buffalo stampede of the simulation hockey league. A team that I once played on, close to 15 seasons ago. They traded for me as a rental and we lost to Hamilton in the conference finals who eventually went on the win the cup, and Buffalo one the cup either the season before I played with them or the season after, or maybe even both, so I absolutely hated to see that lol. WPG should be proud of making it to the finals 3 seasons in a row, but in my opinion Buffalo is just built different and we all saw this coming. Good luck to winnipeg in the future, but this cup was buffalos to take home easy.

2.a. Well, it is pretty simple what the Aurora need to do to actually win championships. They need to change their name back to the Jets as they have never held the cup as the Aurora. Do not believe me look at the cup history. Want to win Winnipeg become the Jets pain and simple. Looks like [TEAM] won the cup! (Sorry, Micool.) What was your favorite part of the series? Who won and why? What could the other team have done differently to have a better chance? Buffalo's resilience is what really stood out to me in this year's finals. They very easily could've taken a game or two off, but they kept the pedal to the metal and grinded out a tough series victory against Winnipeg. I think a team with a little more stiff defense could've given Buffalo more of a challenge, but you have to tip your cap to the Aurora for what they were able to do. Sometimes in this league, you run up against a buzzsaw which is exactly what happened. Buffalo was simply too hot and firing on all cylinders to lose that series. I'm honestly not sure they would've dropped a seven game series to anybody in the entire league with the way they were playing. 126 words 66 | 11 | 29 | 40 | +34 | 71 | 60

My favorite part of the series was the fact that the finales went to 7 games. We got the maximun hockey possible. The Buffalo Stampedes won, I am sad because I was cheering for my friends that play for Winnipeg. Buffalo won with pure grit and determination. They won the first game, lost the three following games and won three in a row to claw their way to victory. They were able to win all kinds of game. From thight OT game to offensive festival. I don’t think that Winnipeg could have done something different. They just needed one lucky bounce and they were not able to get it. 5TPE ISFL AFFILIATE 8tpe credit to Qwest

Code: 3. Written, 3 TPE, Guess Who's Back (150 words min.) I think they could really use the help of a defensive specialist defensemen who was drafted 13OA to Winnipeg via the Hamilton Steelhawks and West Kendall Platoon in the S45 entry draft. I think his Winnipeg franchise record (hopefully still active) hits and blocks would really help their defense in a time where their offense is soaring. It's too bad that they don't have one of those handy in this playoff run. It should be noted that the defensive specialist in question here had a lower defensive rating than the lowest defenseman on Winnipeg throughout these playoffs. However, they brought back Strom Chamberlain as a backup goalie for this season so maybe they could have re-ignited the legend. With the power of hindsight, I can say that this finals appearance does not work out in Winnipeg's favor and in fact they lose the series while outscoring Buffalo 22-21. Their offensive prowess was really on show for the first two games of the series, then they lost 4 close-ish games in a row once Buffalo figured them out. Code: 5. Written, 3 TPE, Blood on the Ice (150 words min) This is the easiest question year over year because bears are too powerful and they have cosmic powers. A herd of buffalo is maybe the easiest opponent we've seen in this arena because you can abused the herd mentality to cause some damage. If a dog can herd sheep around, a bear god can probably herd buffalo off a cliff into the ocean or something. I think the bear god can also abuse the vertical to beat the herd. If the bear ever gets into a sticky situation, they can just start climbing and the herd is useless. If we stack everything against the bear god and it's just a big flat plain, then maybe the stampede has a fighting chance. But I'm thinking that they can just use wind to blow against the herd and give them a solid whack on the face. If you've ever seen a cow in a tornado, we could also take that approach because the buffalo is just a bigger cow. IIHF
Code: 11. Written, 3 TPE, Civil War (150 words min.) Slip McScruff has been around in the league long enough that the idea of playing against certain players does not bother him. It feels like he has the six degrees of separation from every other player. If he pulled punches for having a connection, he would stop throwing hits all together. It's almost like any locker room he walks into is home in this league. However, at this point that grind-set mindset doesn't even matter because he doesn't get invited to play in the IIHF. He shows up to the tournament and has free reign to hang out in any locker room because he knows at least three or four players on any given roster. The only civil war when Slip McScruff is around is what we are going to eat for dinner, and the French usually win that debate really fast with a nice basket of pommes frites and a fat bottle of wine.

Our team changed a bit with me playing on defense and adding impressive rookies on our roster, so our team looked more balanced and I thought that was the difference maker. 2c) I don't want to be too critical, but once again FHM decided which team would win the Cup by getting their goalie really hot, but I think just the fact that Winnipeg reaches the Cup final season after season is more impressive. Winnipeg assert their dominance in the regular season, but I feel like FHM robs us of the cup, which sucks, but as we say... c'est la vie. +2 TPE - 5/8 Code: 3. Written, 3 TPE, Guess Who's Back (150 words min.) It feels weird to say this after the finals, but I really thought it would be the year where the Winnipeg Aurora finally win the championship with their high powered offense. I felt like it was our most stacked roster in our finals appearances so far with most of our core playing together for a while, but alas, it wasn't meant to be. I thought our offense was red hot and would carry us over the edge this time, but it wasn not meant to be. With the great season Rebecca Montagne had, I thought their stat would improve to the mean and the type of performance the Winnipeg Aurora were used to, but once again, it wasn not meant to be. Perhaps it's due to the fact that good old Kaapo Kampainen was now playing on the blue line, although my stats were pretty good, so I don't really know what happened. Winnipeg has a mentality problem and thats why they cant get it done despite superior strength. Their veterans need to step up and lead the team. The franchise has not won since 44 which is their longest drought since the beginning of the league when they won the very first cup. Tough to see a franchise like that struggle like it has. b. Its very very difficult to be unconvinced by two straight sweeps. Teams get hot for sure but that is scorching and nobody on earth should be underestimating them at that point. They beat the 2nd 3rd and 4th in the regular season and that is not accident. Good teams beat good teams. c. The more impressive run is Buffalo for sure. Nobody really picked them to make it deep in the gauntlet in the east, let alone challenge for the cup. Winnipeg was always going to be there and they have had a stacked team for a while now, its not a huge surprise. The west I would argue is not very tough in the first place though. Code: 12. Written, 2 TPE - The Procrastinator Special! (100 words min.) My favorite part of the series was when buffalo kept pounding. Even though we went down 0-2, we never gave up hope that we could win and just kept putting on the pressure which eventually caused the aurora to lose their confidence and we went on to win 4 straight to seal the deal in 6. Even though fantobens was no longer in god like form, the rest of the team stepped up to help him out. It just goes to show that mentality is everything and even if on paper you're beat before the first puck drops, if you believe in yourself no team can stand in your way.

DAD 2. a. I mean, Winnipeg already did everything they can to be the champions. They have an insane offensive squad, their defense is pretty solid too with O’Neil, but they need more defensive dman, as I think they are way more focused on the offense. Even if it is their 3rd straight finals appearance, I’m not sure their defense can handle when it counts yet. C. Buffalo with no hesitation. They came as a wildcard, while Winnipeg destroyed everything on their road during the regular season. Buffalo also destroyed 2 great teams in MTL and NEW, as I thought MTL would win the East this year. Yes Buffalo has a great team, but I did not think that with a roster with so many young players would go that far and especially that easily. GG Buffalo. 3. Well, the results are already in. But I still think that Winnipeg needs to upgrade and patch their defense. Montagne is an incredible goalie, probably one of the greatest in her generation. Like every player, prime is gonna end someday and with this playoff run, we saw that Montagne cannot be at her highest every playoff run. They need to patch up their defense and I hope for them that they will upgrade their defense for next season. Buffalo came out of an insane playoff run as an underdog and they showed everybody that a well balanced team will always win against a one way team. I really like Winnipeg, I hope one day they will finally win the cup they deserved. Maybe they are very unlucky, but I’m sure that patching the defense will sure help winning against teams like Buffalo, because a goalie cannot do everything on every single night. Wheeler 4. Written, 3 TPE, A Challenger Appears (150 words min.) Buffalo hasn't put up the same offensive numbers as the Aurora, but they haven't needed to. Their points leader in Konstantin Selich has 19 points in 16 playoff games, an impressive number in its own right, but the Stampede's hero has been Casey Fantobens, their brick wall with a casual *0.929* save percentage over the playoffs so far. In a battle of unbelievable offense vs the stoutest playoff defense this league has seen in a while, does Buffalo have what it takes to bring home the trophy and send the Aurora back to Winnipeg yet again? I think looking back at Winnipeg's history the past few seasons, where they have fallen short of the ultimate prize despite that unbelievable offence, I think that Buffalo is in a good spot to have a great shot at the title even though they may not have the same offence that winnipeg does, just because their defence and goaltending have been so amazing these playoffs and their own offence has not been terrible either. Buffalo seems like an all around more balanced team these playoffs and ultimately I think that that is what is going to help them to make a good run at that cup in the finals here. Winnipeg will have to really step up their goaltending and defensive numbers if they want to be able to compete with Buffalo as they were just barely able to squeak by Chicago earlier in the playoffs, even though they were the much better team on paper. 12. What could the other team have done differently to have a better chance? Well Winnipeg lost another finals, I think this is their 3rd straight that they have been to and they lost, which is honestly pretty unfortunate for them as they have come so close on many of these occasions. This one would be extra stuff as they won the first couple of the games and then got reverse swept by the Stampede. I think the Aurora just needed some better defending and goaltending to be able to properly close out the series as that is where Buffalo had shined throughout the playoffs. Winnipegs goalie did not have the best playoffs unfortunately. Hopefully 4th time is the charm? Sig by @Ragnar

tea 2. 4tpe a) They don't have to necessarily do anything different. Getting this far should be reasonably received as a fantastic achievement in itself as the consistency to get as far as you can is something to be celebrated. Unfortunately with the all or nothing nature of championships, being this far almost seems to mean as much and perhaps even less than the team who doesn't get this far at all for most intents and purposes. b) Even with a couple sweeps as coming in as a wildcard, I do not think that this has gained any extra sort off perspective that they are a contending team than if they had won in a more typical fashion. This might be wanting to remain even keel that even as a wildcard team they were still good enough to get into the playoffs and sweeps can be a misleading result in a small sample size. c) Winnipeg dispatching a number of tough teams along the way such as potential upstarts in Chicago and Edmonton makes me think that even if the series went longer, still remains impressive given the fact that it would be so easy to slip up against lower seeds as Buffalo's opponents saw themselves do. However, you cannot deny the effect of consecutive sweeps. d) I would have to say, assuming that I did not know the result of the series to begin with that this is yet again another series where it's Winnipeg's to lose given the ongoing constant core of talent they hold onto as part of their long term project. There is not anything more than to get to the dance and show up, so all that is left at this point I suppose is to make it into reality. 12. 2 tpe This perhaps is really getting to repeating itself but I have such a hard time thinking of the what if's when it comes to playoff round battles. On a tactical level there could be something said about employing one strategy over another or perhaps having different line combinations or even a different goalie in hoping that something simply changes your luck. Especially given the lack of feedback from no testing and the final result still remains the same, what's to not say that this was the 5% result that simply panned out? Even if with how FHM runs now pushing the odds into a more balanced 60/40 as opposed to maybe the 80/20 it was previously, the best one can do is improve your odds as best they can and hope the chips fall favorably. |
