S73 SMJHL PT #2 - Season Preview
#31

The Colorado Raptors season is off to a rough start after a first week of play. We currently in last place in the league with a record of 4-10-1. Our goal differential is -24, also last in the league. We hope to turn our season around while playing by grinding out some gritty wins down the stretch. The Raptors are one of the youngest teams in the league with a large rookie class (myself included). With the guidance of our veteran players, this rookie class will grow together. We will then take that experience to build chemistry, work together and hopefully pivot into becoming a winning team.

We will rely on some key players to make that happen:

First our captain, Jussi Mutou, who leads the team in scoring will be the backbone of our team. The leadership and scoring prowess he provides will be a valuable example set to all of the rookies on the team.

Next we will rely on Mutou's linemate, Xavier Beausoleil, another veteran on our top scoring line. Xavier is has an invaluable presence in the locker room, a natural leader even though he doesn't wear a letter. Xavier and Jussi are our anchors on the first line, providing us our best chance at winning.

And finally, we look towards rookie goaltender Tanner Pitts to make stops in net to give us a chance to win. He is currently adjusting to the pace of the SMJHL but once he does, he will be a brick wall for us in net.

Written option: Talk about how your team is looking ahead of the coming season. Include at least 3 players who will be key to the success of the team, plus an explanation why they will be crucial. Must include 150 words.

It is hard to not be excited about playing with the likes of Mercedes Bayle, who leads our team with 25 points, along with tough guy Boho Biscuit and Power play specialist Rowan O'Beirne! I think our balanced lines with everyone contributing will lead to a great success to our season!

Written Option:

The Kelowna Knights have an uphill battle for the season ahead, with the top-heavy Western Conference proving stiff competition. Current leading goal-scorer Activity Check will be crucial to the team's success this year, as the Knights have struggled at times to outscore their problems. Starting goalie Five-Hole Sieve will be a key factor, as the team's goal differential points to struggle both in the blue paint and in their own defensive zone. Crystal McLeod has been generating a ton of offense at Even Strength, and will be key in driving play outside the special teams battle. Rookie Centerman Rodrigo Banes is struggling to keep his head above water, and will need to pick up the pace if the team is to get contributions from their depth forwards. His defensively-oriented play has shown promise at times, but more offense will be needed if the Knights want to improve their -1 Goal Differential and have any serious hopes of being a Playoff Threat.

Cracker Pizza is going to be a critical piece for the Newfoundland Berserkers this season.  The rookie provides a versitility this team desperately needs.  He has the size and brains to play forward or defense.  His success will be critical.
Team Heem will have to grow into more of a leadership role on this young team and take more responsibility.  The prime minutes are ripe for the taking and he'll need to step up.
Sad Ketchup is a bonafide stud. We've yet to see where goals will come from for this squad but Sad is the safest bet for a breakout season. We'll have to see if coach Burb will want to give him anymore responsibility past putting the puck in the net.  In the past Sad has been known to shy away from physical play and making the sacrifices nessacary to win. To quote Sad himself "too hard, too scary".

Regina going into this season should be one of the top 3-5 teams in the league. We return a lot of good vets and got some very high upside rookies to help round out the team, especially on the blue line. The top 2 players to drive the team for sure are going to be Mercedes Bayle and Rowan O'Bierne. Bayle is already leading the league in scoring after just a 1/4 of the way through the season. O'Bierne right on their tail only 3 points back on the same line. Those 2 should be the main factors into how far the team goes and driving play for the full season. On the blueline there's some top players but also some new rookies who should help round out the depth and as the season goes make it into a real strength. Mikkel Enevoldsen and Bartholomew Chungus Gingersnap III will be nice compliments to both the offense and defense and both are already making impacts in the plays while still being newer to the team and game.

Success for the Québec City Citadelles might not be what most people expect. Normally when a team looks for success they aim to win it all, to make a deep run in the playoffs after failing to qualify the year before. Québec however aims to improve their massive list of rookies and have fun in the upcoming season, although... there's nothing more fun than a trip to Denny's and for that, Québec needs to do whatever they can to help NetMan get some shutouts! Net Man himself is a solid goaltender, nominated for most underrated player last season. While a 0.897 SV% nor a 3.91 GAA is incredible, Net Man is still the key contributor to make these shut outs happen. To his sides and slightly forward up the ice is the defensive core of Jagrbomb, Mall, Roze, Tymer, J.P. V2 and Rappaz-Creek. While four of these players are rookies, Jagrbomb and Mall have already been taking ample steps in mentoring these young faces to become stalwarts in front of Net Man. Finally, a good team can't win off defense alone, that's what the offensive rookies are for. Desjardins, the Solberg Sisters, Pawn, Sperado are all going to be key contributors to the offense especially when being mentored by Jeff Hunziker and alternate captain Ryland Murphy. These young guns will show their offensive talent not only this season but in the seasons to follow and QCC will be a force to be reckoned with.

As the Colorado Raptors are one of the younger team, GM New York Rangers Seventy and Three and Coach Takk Eight Hundred And Six also agent of young promising player Xavier Beausoleil put the expectation low for the locker room but there is some excitement about the future. First of the Captain of the team, Jussi Mutou, will be the dynamo of the offense as the 1st line is looking to carry a heavy load as the rookies compose the majority of the forward core. At defense we have the general Update Portal who is the pillar in the back linking everyone together and helping the children get the rythm of the league. The rookie to look at on the roster is Shadow Fenix who is centering the top line, banging in goals and also probably moms and also dads with their consent because that is hot and the way to go.

Colorado will be winning the cup in two seasons with this core

Being part of the Quebec City Citadelles there are a lot of expectations for us to make the playoffs and our team success will obviously be dependent on the team as a whole. However, Shawn Pawn is not just an tool to be sacrificed for others success. Shawn Pawn will be critical to the teams success. Although he may not see a lot of playtime, when he is on the ice Shawn Pawn is sure to be a focal point of the success of Quebec City. Despite Shawn Pawns lack of presences on defense. He should be a possession machine, getting open frequently. Now the pair of players that will be the most important to Shawn Pawns success and ultimately QCC is Sonja and Froya Solberg. Both being Shawn Pawn's linemates, they will be doing the heavy lifting. Froya being a very balanced and defensive minded center is extremely important in covering up for Shawn Pawn's flaws. Sonja is the ideal linemate for Shawn Pawn being a solid two way player with great distribution and front of net presence. All three of them will need to continue to grow if QCC should look to have success.

I think the future for the Colorado Raptors  is mixed with turns and dips to braces for, hills to climb and a swamp to wade through but I think we'll come out just fine. So here are three guys that I think will be major keys to our success:

1. Nik Smith [RD]
Smith, a stout 6'2" 226Lbs, currently leads the Raptors in shot blocks with a staggering amount of 75! The next closest skater in all of SMJHL is Remington Richardson III with 57; he would need to have blocked 32% more in order to tie with Smith. Smith just needs to keep doing what he's doing.

2. Shadow Fenix [C]
Fenix, 6'1" 190Lbs, is a rookie that leads the team in (10) Goals, (14.3) Shot % and (6) EV Goals. The future looks bright for the Raptors having drafted someone that is also tied for 8th in goals for the entire SMJHL. Fenix will continue to progress and continue to give the Raptors that offensive boost we need.

3. Napoleon Dinklage (LD)
Dinklage, a robust 5'8" 205Lbs, needs to step up their game make better decisions. 24 PIM and a team-low 4 points (2G 2A) is surely not the way Dinklage wanted to start the year and he knows it. He's recently been seen working with his HS trainer Chris Krinkle on how he can be a better offensive threat Napoleon is second in the SMJHL for (46) Hits, so if he can bring that same energy to other aspects of the game, the Raptors have a much better shot at turning things around.

The Citadelles have gotten off to a rough start but that's no reason for the Quebec faithful to go MIA just yet - there's some diamonds to be sifted from the rough! Celeste Desjardins's fantastic rookie campaign is the brightest spot on the team by far - either at the top or in contention for pretty much every offensive statistic advanced or not and playing with some needed aggression, leading the team in hits. She also leads the team in power play goals - do the wonders not cease? Jeff Hunziker is making the most of his third season in the SMJHL, eating up minutes and leading the team in points, as well as one of the better power play performers. Last but not least is Jaromir Jagrbomb doing a fantastic job of anchoring the QCC defense with 27 blocks and a +6 on a team with only 3 players with positive +/- to begin with!

The Kelowna Knights are definitely underdogs in the league, facing off against some heavy contenders they will likely be a bubble playoff team. Going into the regular season Activity Check is our top goal scorer and will need to keep it up as the team's backend has struggled to keep pucks out of the net and will need to offset this, Five-Hole Sieve will be maybe the most important player, as the team needs to improve in keeping GA low and that improvement starts with the goalie. The whole story of the team is a challenge of +/- the team can be high scoring but the goals against can be many, and the defense falls apart. Rodrigo Banes was the team's first round pick and hopefully his more defensively sided play can help reduce the goals against the Knights, because if they can't slow down the scoring then their games will be exciting to watch but the outcome will fall more often out of their favor.

For the Kraken to succeed this upcoming season, a lot of pressure is going to fall onto the established, capped blue-liners in Lazer Gato and Wesley Kirkpatrick. In order of applied TPE, Rence Sykut is capped at 350 and is a natural centre, and then there is a drop off to Lilian Flapberg, Roger Murdock, and Dalton Candors in the lower 200's to high 100's. With the 3rd best defensemen being a forward, there is a lot of pressure on Gato and Kirkpatrick to headman a strong blue line and eat big minutes as the top pairing players--while of course teaching Sykut and Murdock how to play the new positions.

At forward it's tough to think of any players who are vital outside of the entire top 6. All key members--Aumy, Kastraba, Svatos, Mograine, Betzee, and Stro--are experienced, are at cap, and have put up strong counting numbers to start the year. Instead I'd put some onus on Bjorntjanst. As the Kraken's 1st round pick he is starting on the 3rd line. It is vital for any contender to have strong top to bottom depth, and as the projected 5th overall SHL draftee (shoutout Luke) there is obvious potential and room to drive play as the season goes along. There are naturally going to be growing pains but the early returns have DOB with positive posession statistics that suggest they can push for more points as the physical growth comes along. There is immense potential for DOB to drive play and, much like the defense mentioned above, support other S74 draftees on the same line to do the same. Cup inbound btw.
