Class of 71 we did it, we have all fully graduated into the SHL!  What a wild run in the SMJHL it has been.  Trades of all sorts right from the early part of our inaugural season right until the very end at the deadline.  We have experienced highs and lows along the journey and as we transition into our next phase of our SHL careers, lets take a minute to celebrate our draft class and the success we have accomplished in a once in an SHL history yearbook special!

What a bunch of amazing young players and prospects.  Most trying to figure out their way in the SHL and understand the day to day to create a successful player.  We were bombarded by SMJHL GMs in the weeks leading up to the draft.  With hopes and dreams of which team would call our name and how early would we be called to the podium to don our new colours.  There was a buzz in the air, as legends of old had recreated and come back, with new young blood looking promising with high activity early in the process.  It played out 8 months ago to nearly this day.

Defensively sound hockey. Chicken may be the poster boy for shutdown defender, he is excellent at reading defensive plays, seeing them develop and positioning himself to take away lanes or knock a puck loose. He has a great pass to get the puck out of the zone and he is above average at carrying the puck if needed. He will not be used in offensive situations; his shot would miss the broad side of a barn at 2 feet away.

A defense first mentality has become a staple to Furious Chicken’s game.  He can hit like the best of them, is always in the way of opposing players and reads the play well in his own zone.  He has become better in the offensive zone, but he will not wow you with goals being scored.  Still, he can move the puck well and he understand and reads the offensive play better creating opportunities with crisp passes.  He has amazing stamina allowing him to play longer minutes in top form and he is physically as good as anyone else in the league.

Max may be the best all-around player in this draft. No weaknesses to his game, and everything is above average to good. He is not elite in anyone area, but he can do it all and every week he just keeps getting better and better. He is not afraid to mix it up, work the dirty areas, he lays hits, he is really good in his own zone. And he has not sacrificed his face off skills to get good (56.4% won this season).

Max graduating a year early means he looks a little more complete than most of this draft class.  He has really created an impressive two way player with few weaknesses to his game.  There is a bit more of a lean towards the physical style of his game as he has made himself stronger, and well balanced with amazing stamina allowing him to compete at the highest level for a longer time.  He is fantastic in reading and moving the puck in the offensive zone, but still lacks a bit on the shooting side as perhaps one of his only weaknesses.

I don’t know what they put in his breakfast cereal, but Thomas was a human wrecking machine, 230 hits! He is also a very good all around two way player. With good stats in everything he does. There is no real weakness in Thomas’ game and his stat lines shows it, a point per game player in his rookie season is amazing. I would expect as Thomas grows he will work on his shot as a lower stat on offensive and shot blocking on defense.

Thomas’ game has gone from a one man wrecking crew to an all-world offensive star, to finally settling down as a two way threat on the ice.  He is the kind of player that every GM hopes to draft and develop as he plays a team first mentality and has been rewarded with some incredible highs from doing so.  He looks to continue to develop into a complete 200 foot player with or without the puck and owns no real weakness to his game.

One of the best pure shooters in the draft, Webb has built his game on putting shots on net. He has mastered getting open and moves well with the puck. His defensive game is below average lacking in the want to put his body on the line. He will throw out hits and has an amazing top speed with above average acceleration to get into the opposing team’s zone.

Webb has continued to develop into an offensive threat and finally in season 73 it all came together for him.  The key to his game and success is being in the opposing zone as he is a liability in his own end with below average defensive stats.  But with the puck on his stick in the offensive end he is a force to be reckoned with as he dominates the play.  With one of the better top end speeds in the league, if he can get a jump on his opponents a break away almost guarantees a goal.

Over 66 games Mercedes only blocked 11 shots!? I figured you would get 20+ by dumb luck alone, either she is the luckiest player around or unluckiest I am not sure which way you want to take that. With that out of the way she is an offensive force of nature! Phenomenal at creating room to move, great at putting pucks on the net, creating chances by screening, or moving the puck to an open teammate. Defensively she is no slouch with the exception of blocked shots, and she is fast enough to beat most defenders.

Season 73 Scouting Report:

This offensive power forward has become a player that can lift a team on their own and will them into the playoffs.  Bayle is not known for the defensive side of the puck but has attributes that can become better in their own zone.  Instead, Bayle does all of their work in the offensive zone by bashing bodies, shooting the puck and despite being a 6’11” monster dancing around opposing players with the finesse, players a foot shorter with half their weight lack the ability to do.  Mercedes is ready for the next challenge as they make their way to the SHL next season.

Oliver is going to be one of the best two-way forwards in the league. He has taken time to at the very least to touch up in each area. He is great at the defensive side of the puck and solid about the offensive side of the puck. The only weakness to his game would be he needs to get in close to really have an effective shot. Any team that picks up Castillon is going to have one of the Elite Gems in this year’s draft.

Oliver took an early jump into the SHL and has found moderate success as a young player in the SHL.  There is a lot to like about these two ways forward’s game.  He has become a better shooter and stronger at protecting the puck and is almost as strong as players who are already in their prime.  He reads plays better than before and is accountable in both ends of the ice really making he a complete player in all three zones and giving Los Angeles a player, they can use in all situations.  He has show himself to have a team first mentality as he develops.

Perhaps the most gifted sniper in this draft, he is able to read the plays, get open and handle the puck like few others, with a pinpoint accurate shot and great velocity behind it. Offensively his only weak spot is working in front of the net. Defensively Svatos is average, his hitting and blocked shots need a lot of work but that is not why you draft Svatos (not that you can). Svatos looks to be the focal point for his team’s offense going forward.

Season 73 Scouting Report:

Theodore has stayed true to his original purpose.  He is a goal scoring forward first and foremost.  He still knows how to move with the puck, and he is even quicker than he was before making him that much more difficult to contain and defend.  Defensively he has become better but is still a bit of a liability in his own zone.  But the best defense is a good offense and if Theodore has the puck he will get it to the offensive zone one way or another, and if he does he will likely score.

At this time Jay is a defensive two way defender…I feel like that is a copout but hear me out. Jay’s shot is nothing great, to be honest it is average at best for a defender. But Jay excels in all other aspects of the offensive game, great passing, puck handling and getting open. Defensively Jay is great at reading the plays and good at acting on it. If his shooting was better I would put him as an offensive or at the very least two way defender, but with a lacking shot he gets a defensive grade.

Jay took the early jump to the SHL and has not looked back.  He continues to develop as a future top two way defender, leaning a little heavier to the defensive side of the game.  His shot, while has approved is still not great.  He does rely on his other skills in the offensive zone with moving the puck, reading the play and keeping away from opposing forwards.  On defense he is developing into a strong checking monster, working the dirty areas of the ice and keeping his crease clean.  He looks to be a prototype number 1 defender that Baltimore will build around for their future defense.

Levin is the perfect two way forward, like splitting even in defensive and offensive stats. His hitting is ridiculous during the season, it must be a Grizzlies thing as all their rookie forwards have high hit counts. If there is one area to work on for Levin as a rookie for offense would be shooting range, for defense would be shot blocking, but that is being nitpicky on my part. He has done well to spread the wealth of his training to become a great overall player.

Levin has developed into a well-rounded two way forward with no real weakness to his game, but nothing that stands out as a top end skill.  A jack of all trades but master of none type.  That is not a bad thing as he will be an accountable player in all areas of the ice being able to do it all.  Shattenaxt’s bread and butter is not making mistakes and capitalizing on others that do, this kind of skill set will be a great asset in the big leagues as the game changes and others can no longer dominate the game as they once did in juniors.

I am curious how Dominik is going to develop over the next while. Most players you can see what they are doing and what their most likely next steps will be. Winters has a two way forward build but it is everywhere. He is elite in reading and understanding what is going on in the offensive zone, but only good to great in his skills he brings in the offensive zone. Defensively you could argue he is better skilled and while talented his defensive reads are not as good as his offensive reads. Overall Dominik could be the future mold of two way forwards.

A lot of centers are known for their playmaking ability, not Aumy. Aumy is a goal scoring force and an overall impressive offensive machine. Lacking in the defensive zone could be part of the off season work out, or perhaps the plan is just to be one of the best offensive weapons on the market. The other area to focus on would be general foot speed to really help create separation from the league’s elite defenders.

PURE OFFENSE maybe the greatest shot in juniors today, Aumy had one goal in mind, to score the puck.  If that puck is anywhere near their stick they are going to shoot first.  Defense is left a lot to be desired at this time and it will be an area that needs to be worked on before Aumy takes the ice at the next level, but that is what the offseason and coaching is for.  Still anyone who watches Aumy play knows you are going to see an exciting event happen soon, as the terrific shot of Aumy is deadly from anywhere on the ice.

The Kraken must love their defensive forwards hard hitting and forwards. Alexej is another one that fits the bill. A solid defensive game, with big hits, and tons of heart. Alexej is not afraid to go into the dirty areas of the ice in any zone and mix it up. Offensively this left winger is a little lacking but plays a key role in blocking out the goalie’s vision and moving the puck out of corners.

You must love a player that takes a team first mentality and develops to be a solid overall piece to see the team’s success over their own personal success.  Not that there is anything wrong with personal success.  That is the direction of Alexej.  A solid build top to bottom with no weakness to their game but highlighting the dirty jobs others do not want to do.  He screens better than anyone else and works the dirty areas of the ice with checking and stick checking to keep the front of the net busy on both sides of the ice.

A very talented two way defender that could become a powerplay QB1. Bellamy has very few weaknesses in their game. The biggest dip I can see is a lack of desire to lay out hits, Bellamy’s shot from the distance doesn’t seem to have the power most offensive defenders have. Outside of that Blake has a very healthy mix of good to great stats across the board. Foot speed would be the last area that could use a touch up to keep up with top end forwards.

Bellamy excels in the offensive zone and should be utilized as a QB 1 on the power play going forward.  While he lacks the booming shot a lot of other top offensive defenders own, he has the smoothest passes and can thread the needle to make tape to tape passes in traffic.  Defensively he is good, but not great.  That is not his game.  He is the guy to move the puck in the opposing zone, setting up a big assist and keeping his team a head in the score board.

An offensive stud with a phenomenal shot, great at getting open and reading the play for one timer opportunities. Defensively Johnny’s game needs a little work as he is average or below average in that part of his game. Simply put, you want someone that will create offense get Johnny, you need someone who is defensively minded keep looking.

This offensive wizard can do it all with the puck on his stick.  Owning a heck of a shot, really good puck handling and can see the offensive play develop and react accordingly with good foot speed.  He is strong enough and physically gifted enough to be hard to knock off the puck and fight for it.  If there is one thing that will need to improve it is his defensive game as he will be a liability on the ice in the big league.  Still you can’t say enough good things about how talented he is in the offensive zone.

A playmaking two way forward, Thomas strength is in his offensive game and how he moves the puck around. With good speed and acceleration as well as puck handling skills he is good at moving the puck. He can read the play extremely well and knows when to make a signature pass. Defensively he doesn’t lay big hits but knows how to play the body and does well reading the play. He is a solid overall player that has few weaknesses to his game, if he would work on his hitting and screening he would be one of the top two way forwards in this draft.

This offensive center is focused on a good overall game.  While there is a tendency to the offensive side of the ice, Sawchuk is accountable in their own end which is nice to see.  His specialty is moving with the puck and reading plays as they develop this has created many opportunities for success on both sides of the puck, and if I was a young prospect I would look to this build to give me direction on how to best become a useful SMJHL player.  You don’t need the biggest shot, but if you can get open and read the play you can become successful in this league.

Shootin Blanks is a two way center, one of the absolute best in this draft class in the faceoff circle. This stat helps his line get an early jump on the opposition every time he takes a draw. In every other way he is above average but not great in any other stat. Something I love he is aggressive and not afraid to drop the gloves when needed. If there is any aspect that needs to be worked on it would be to get something else elite, to take the next step.

When we talk about aggressive, angry players that play with an edge to their game Andren is the poster boy for this. HE LOVES TO HIT, and he does it A LOT! But he is more than just a one man wrecking crew, he has offensive and defensive tools, none are elite yet, but they are steadily growing. He might be one of the best at screening in this class. If he can focus on the defensive reads a bit more he will be a real threat as a defensive forward star.

Overall, a solid two way build that leans towards the offensive side of the puck.  Andren will be a real asset to the Los Angeles Panthers in the coming years.  He could work a bit more in every area of the ice as he has picked a different route then most to become a star player, this can only be seen as a good thing as he fills in the blanks other players do not excel in as well and they can compliment his weaknesses on the ice.  Arguably his biggest strength is his body of work in front of opposing nets as he causes chaos making it difficult for opposing defenders to move him around and headaches for goalies.

Focusing on a game that will make him a pain in the ass in the offensive zone.  Barg is amazing at causing issues for teams from the hash marks forward.  With a pass first mentality but owning the capabilities to move the puck either on his own or a crisp pass.  He also loves to park in front of the net and become a wall for goalie to try and work around as battles it out with defenders.  If he could work in one area of his game it would be the defensive side, that will come, but for now he is a great looking offensive forward.

The left winger is an offensive machine, don’t let his average goal total confuse you. The guy screams league leader in goals in the future. He has a tenacity to get open and dangles the puck through traffic like few others in the draft class. His defensive side of the puck is average, focusing in areas that make it difficult for opponents to get around him, and he is average in his physical development. The only weakness, is his lack of aggression/bravery but that is something that can improve over time.

A pure offensive weapon to be unleashed during the power play.  That is the best way I can describe Filip.  He has a few holes to his game, but he overcomes these holes with a dominating offensive performance.  His shot is out of this world.  And keeping him in check is next to impossible for SMJHL defenders.  How these skills will translate to the big league I am not sure.  Overall his defensive game is lacking but not terrible and he will need to work on getting stronger, but if you need someone to take a shot for the win he might be your guy.

He is offensively gifted rookie with a cannon of a shot up close, he has incredible speed and an amazing first step to blow by defenders, and he doesn’t hesitate when he gets the puck on his stick. His defensive game is lacking, and besides shooting and skating he has work to do on the offensive side. That will come along as he continues to develop.

Unfortunately for myself, Kim updated early.  So, this is based on his full build.  Kevin is a fantastic two way threat while developing into one of the better two way forwards in this draft class.  His shooting power is a little lacking, but he can dance his way to the front of the net and make amazing close range shots.  Defensively he is sound with an amazing ability to see the play develop, both on offense and defense.  Physically he is solid with no weakness to his game, making it so he can move well up and down the ice and win most battles he will encounter.

The fact that Shuffleboard only played 17 games, but his TPE is so high shows signs of a high earner as he continues to develop. A very balanced overall stat package with few weaknesses to his game. Truly a jack of all trades but master of none.

I like Johnny’s build a lot for a lot of different reasons.  He is offensively gifted and does a lot of great things with or without the puck in the offensive zone but is not the most dominate player on the ice in that offensive zone, he is a great compliment player.  On the defensive side of the puck, he is good, but not great, but knows what is happening in his own zone, and understands the play developing enough to be a nuisance for opposing players.  With his skill set he will find the transition to the big leagues a lot easier than most.  A different build for a defender but I like it!

Two way defender that is incredibly hockey smart. Really, really good at reading the plays both in the offensive and defensive zone but may be lacking a few of the tools to excel in either zone. Clearly Ryan’s calling card is how well he moves the puck, crisp passes and a quick first step with excellent control. Defensively Ryan is average in everything he does but always knows what is going on. A lack of top speed will hurt Ryan when opponents break out on him.

This two way defender is built to be stronger on the offensive side of the puck, but no slouch in their own zone.  An elite pass is the hallmark to Green’s game.  Green is most dangerous from the opposing blue line forward despite seeing the play in his own zone developing; he lacks the overall strength to really move stronger opponents.  Still he is talented enough to make his stick work and positioning break up developing plays and he isn’t scared to put his body on the line diving in front of booming shots.
