The divisional system and playoff format seem to mimic the NHL even though the two leagues have different sizes and geographies. I'd be interested to see the SHL do something unique like a balanced 76 game schedule where each team plays every other team 4 times with 1-16, 2-8, etc playoff matches.

There are no injuries in the SHL and I think that's important to keep differently from the NHL. Not that the NHL can even turn off injuries, but keeping them turned off in our league insures peoples aren't discouraged to participate by a random injury hurting their player's performance.

I think the SHL in general would be more fun if free agency actually carried the same weight it does in the NHL. As it stands right now, there are VERY few trades that are surprising and most are just meme trades sending GM player corpses to another team for one more crack at a cup.

I sort of wish that contract negotiations and unit and player tactics were a thing again, because I think that would make things more varied tactically, but I understand why it is better to not do it that way in the SHL.

A fleshed out system for IIHF would be cool: Olympics mattering and being separate is a really cool idea, and while there's been many pitches, there haven't been any that have made it to application since the S10's. Promotion and demotion are cool concepts as well, just worrying when you considering you're no longer playing for an IIHF gold per se.
