An Interview with a Dominant SMJHL Player - Javelin Bodine
#1

Here we are halfway through the season and we’ve had a few players stand tall about the rest of their peers. One of those players is Javelin Bodine who has been nothing short of impressive on the back end of the Anchorage Armada. Bodine has helped his team get off to a roaring start with a record of 21-7-3 which is good enough to place them first in their conference and second in the league. They are 13 points ahead of second in their conference.

Through 31 games Bodine has impressed offensively putting up 7 goals and 22 assists for a league leading (amongst defenders) 29 points. Bodine is tied for sixth in goals, two behind the leader and is tied for the lead in assists amongst the the defensive group. We’re not done yet with Bodine making it into the top 5 defenders in shots as well, currently sitting at 77 shots. Bodine isn't just an offensive weapon. They are willing to throw their body around as well. they have 60 hits which is good enough for seventh in the league. What makes Bodine even more impressive is they are a rookie. Anchorage cannot be disappointed with their third overall pick so far this season. I was lucky enough to sit down and chat with Javelin to get some insight into how they have been conquering this league from day one.

Bodine doesn’t feel any of the pressure that comes with sitting atop the league in numerous stat categories, as they gave credit to their coaching staff and mentality to being able to play freely. “I didn't ever expect to be in this position at this point in the season. I think that mentality takes the pressure off and lets me play freely on the ice. The coaching staff does a great job of just letting me play my game.” Bodine said. The humbleness of this future star continued when asked about the key to their consistency and success thus far. Bodine stated there was no weight on their shoulders due to the team “welcoming me with open arms and pushing me to be better every day”.

It sure seems like the Armada locker room is tight knit as Bodine wasn’t done giving praise to their teammates. “My teammates have been incredible throughout this whole season. They have grabbed me by the hand and dragged me along to this success. I love my teammates and couldn't imagine being anywhere else in the league”. Either this locker room is incredible or the management is paying players for lip service. If I’m being honest, it’s likely the former, what locker room wouldn’t be pumped and rallying together when they are off to as hot of a start as Anchorage?

As if leading all defenders in points is easy for a rookie, Bodine nonchalantly stated that their personal goal was to remain atop the standings. “Considering my position in the league standings for statistics, I'd like to continue to stay where I am for defensemen and finish out the season near point per game”. This only makes sense for a player that success comes easy to. With half the season left, Bodine will have to dig deep to continue with this success.

The solid start for the Archangels has fueled Bodine's desire to win. They are now expecting a lot out of a team that has finished mid-table for many recent seasons. “I also have growing expectations for our team as well. I think we are now true cup challengers in the J”. The team is certainly excited to see themselves atop the standings and are looking to continue with their early success for the remainder of the season. Time will tell if their expectations meet reality. I’m not so sure Anchorage has it in them to maintain this early season success but I am certain of one thing. Bodine will continue to wreak havoc on the league for many seasons to come.

Thank you to Blix900 for taking the time to answer my questions. Best of luck in the future, except when playing against Chuck and the Kraken.
