SMJHL GM That boy ain't right
I have been part of Newfoundland since I joined the league in season 61, it's been my Junior league home and now I'm even the head GM so I wanted to talk about how good this squad has been. When I joined, NL was coming off a season 60 4-star cup win and was honestly looking to do a little bit of a rebuild but the season 62 class had something else in mind. After getting to the finals in season 61, they were unfortunately beat by Vancouver in only 4 games. This would start the zerks onto a string of dominance though, going on to winning the next three 4-star cups back to back to back including winning the president's trophy in both seasons 63 and 64. This also lead to my first player Jay O'Neil having three 4-star cups under his belt before even making it to the SHL (who would go on to winning a WJC, IIIHF and SHL championship). Even in S65 after winning 3 in a row, NL got close and were up three games to one in the finals before Detroit came back and beat them. This means that to start the season 60s, NL won four 4-star cups and were in six straight finals, if that's not dominance I'm not sure what is. That would eb the end of the decade of dominance though as they had to rebuild after winning so much, season 66 found them at 12th in the league and in season 67 they were dead last and won the draft lottery. Season 68 showed some improvement as they were able to make it to 10th and season 69 showed how their rebuild was going and got them to 5th in the league. Not included in this was the following year in season 70, they became a champion again and one another 4-star cup after a successful rebuild, because players last only four seasons in the junior league rebuilds are very fast. Bellow is the NL point totals per season for the decade:
You can clearly see the incredible start followed by the sharp decline and then the rebuild taking hold and the team starting to improve again. Next we need to compart NL against everyone else in the league to show their real dominance, all the cups paints a picture but diving into the wins shows a lot too. Below is the cumulative points per team for each team from Season 60 to season 69:
Despite being in last place for one season, NL still dominates the leaderboard with 860 points in the 10 seasons and a 410-210 record. Next is QCC with 803 points, they had a dominate team for most of the mid to late season 60s but that only ended up with one 4-star cup in season 69. Next is Colorado 797 who were dominate a lot of the decade but in unfortunately lead to no 4-star cups. The only other team to win multiple 4-star cups in this decade is Detroit who were pretty middle of the pack in terms of points. NL was a dominate force when I first started and even for a little bit after I left, winning more games than anyone and winning more cups than anyone. Hopefully I can do that again as GM to bring glory back to the Newfoundland Berserkers name.
