Deep Dive #2 - A Brief History of the Tidal
#1

For the first time since S64, SMJHL hockey returned to southern California after the departure of the Anaheim Outlaws. But the Panthers of LA would not be getting another in-town farm team. This new team would head further south to the fertile lands of San Diego. I'm excited to write about this team because for the first time since my player Conner Snooks left the Js, Nevada has a rivalry back. Yes, Colorado could be Nevada's rival, but Anaheim was much closer and was much more fierce. Back in the day when divisions were set, Anaheim, Nevada and Colorado were fierce. Now with the addition of Ottawa and San Diego, divisions are set again and Nevada finally has another nearby rival in San Diego.

In S76, a new SMJHL franchise was awarded to Corey, who put the team in San Diego and named them the Tidal. Which personally I think was a good decision. Tidal Wave is too obviously. Tidal sounds more like those who are connected to the ocean or the forces that act upon the beaches and coastlines. The constant erosive process that eats away slowly at the continents over millions of years. Eventually, everything returns to the sea. Anyway.

S76 had an expansion draft and both teams got to pick from a pool of players from around the league. San Diego's roster after this draft looked like this (highligted in green are players who would eventually move on from SDT into the SHL):

Caper Poirot - LW
Brandon Gilleyes - LW
Daquavion Davis II - LW
Sergey Ivanov - LD
Future Considerations - RW
Noah Smith - LD
Meo Vanbiesbrouck - G
Journey Man - RD
Æric Calland - C
Klims Jevsejevs - RW

Then with two picks in the S76 draft. SDT would take Gina Pinard - LW at 4oa and Sam Volta - C at 18oa. That would be the main 12 of SDTs 17 man roster.

The first season went well for SDT. Finishing just above .500 at 33-32-1 and finishing 5th in the Southern Conference. Unfortunately they would be knocked out of their first playoffs by rival Nevada. But the team saw very solid production out of their 2 draft picks Sam Volta and Gina Pinard who finished 1st and 3rd on the team in points with 71 and 67, respectively.

Due to their midtable success. SDT did not have a pick until 7oa in S77 where they took Felix Carlsson - C. Unfortunately, a lot of the expansion players had graduated out of the Js and SDT suffered, especially losing goalie Meo Vanbjesbrouch to a call-up to TBB. SDT finished last in the league with Gina Pinard leading the team with 62 points. Rookies Felix had a solid 45 points and goalie Walter Scheibli had 17 of the teams 21 wins. Great for a true rookie goalie.

With the 2oa pick in the S78 draft SDT took Roisin Armagh - LD. A very promising defender with a bright future. They then traded Colorado for 6oa to take Jeremy Snugglemuffin III - LD. They took TBFAW with their first 3rd round pick in franchise history and even went deep in the 4th for Bernard Kochese. They also traded the two players they took in the S76 draft (Sam and Gina) for a S78 young star from NBB, Christov Kovalev (S78), and a handful of NBB picks. SDT again finished last. But with a soon to be maxed goalie and 4 solid earning rookies from S79. SDT looks to be on the upswing and should become a force in the next few seasons.
