S78 SMJHL PT #5 - Playoff Dreams Due: Sunday, September 15th @ 11:59 PM PST
#16

The yukon malamutes have prepared for the playoffs in quite spectacular fashion.
Chuck Lumbermouth prepared his lumber mouth even more by shaping his mouth to be even sharper, prepared to chomp down on anyone in his path (Might not be accurate at all) But it does sound scary right?
Djoe Anderson prepared by dropping any excess weight that may be holding him back in any fashion, THE Djoe Anderson does not need to be held back, especially over something as minor as a parking spot. so he decided to divorce his wife of twelve years.
The entire team participated in a hotdog eating contest, surely no one loves glizzies as much as the yukon malamutes own Djoe Anderson? well apparently there's quite some contention among the ranks as we try to determine who actually loves them more. Anyways what ended up happening is no one really treated it as a contest and we just enjoyed way more beer than we should have. In the end the winner had only eaten 3, everyone else ended up too drunk.

The Newfoundland Berzerkers spent the last few weeks before the playoffs began by trying to right the ship. A seven-game losing streak had the team needing to find some positive momentum before the post season began. We did that by winning six of our last seven games, including a pair of wins over our first-round opponent, Yukon.

The turnaround happened because Sburbine had us on the ice working until the wee hours of the morning like he was Herb Brooks. I'm actually surprised he didn't start saying "the legs feed the wolf."

Burb made sure that Ima Noobie continued to work on his game, heading into the final days before the playoffs. He gave the Noob plenty of film to study and pointed out key areas where the rookie could improve on his defensive read skills. Ima Noobie followed along, taking notes, rewinding certain plays and getting mentally ready to appear in the hockey playoffs for the first time in his life.

The Vancouver Whalers are entering the playoffs after a slightly disappointing year, but with hopes of repeating their Four Star Cup victory in S77. Well over half the roster is returning from that championship, so they have the experience needed for a Cup run, though with no veteran goalies, that run may be cut short, since Doom Guy and Cristobal Khabibulin struggled in the first half of the season. Vancouver has no superstar to lead the team, with only NoNo Jo and Olafur Atlason having 60 points, David Vent on the blueline had 36, the most for their defenders. Rookies Dominic Enselmo and Levon Dojkic combined for 48 points on the third line, showing promise for future years, when they will step up into the roles of those departing for the SHL. As of today, the Whalers have won both of their games against Great Falls, and will look to defeat them as soon as possible.

It had been a long season, one full of up and downs, but the Mutes knew they were up to the task. All year they had been preparing for the eventuality that if they made the playoffs, it would be on the back of several rookies out performing expectations. This meant conditioning was key to make it through the grind of a full season and still have something left in the tank for the playoffs. With this in mind the Malamutes hired 91 year old world renowned trainer and fitness guru Bill Carter. Bill put the Mutes rookies through a strict training regiment which involved running away from a mother wolf while carrying both of her wolf puppies. Surely the danger would whip them into shape. Yukon wasn't worried about the hockey side of things, the skill was apparent across the roster. With Bill Carter on their side surely they couldn't lose.

The Mutes didn't need to prepare. We are prepared for this battle. Win or lose we are going to bring everything we got to every game. We fought hard for the spot we are in currently in the regular season. Its brought us all closer as a team and I suspect we will make a decent run in the playoffs. We have the grit, we have the determination, and we have the effort to get us there. Our team is well rounded and our rookies really stepped it up this year and put up some tremendous points together. With the depth we are developing win or lose we have a lot to look forward to next season and the seasons to come after. Nothing but positivity over here on the mutes and that is what you need to be a winner in this league. WE WILL FIGHT ON AND PROSPER NO MATTER THE OUTCOME!

For the Newfoundland Berserkers we are coming into the playoffs as heavy underdogs and the league pundits would seem to agree. However that is just motivation for this young squad to prove the doubters wrong.

Heavy training in the week leading up to the playoffs. If we won't be the most talented we will be the most conditioned. Sprinkled in to normal practices were puckless practices, the same ones that bring up dread from seeing no pucks on the ice in minor hockey. Conditioning and edge work was the focus in these practices that are especially brutal for the goalies.

Aside from that a healthy dose of underdog movies as a team building excercise. Miracle, Remember the Titans, Rudy were all viewed. Slapshot, The Replacements and even Cool Runnings thrown in as well.

The Zerks were given a slight break to recover prior to the start of their series with Yukon and hope to come in well rested, conditioned and motivated.

Playoff Hockey.

This is what Duke Howard is made for.  Big game, big beard, big goals.

The Quebec City Citadelles are poised to catch teams off guard and play spoilers.  We went a little hard in practice the last few weeks of the season, wanting to hone that fine edge for the playoffs.  Did our late season record suffer as a result? Possibly, but no one remembers regular season records when they win it all.

After those grindstone practices, Duke stuck around the rink and hammered shots until he could barely lift his arms anymore.

Even away from the rink hockey is on his mind, catching highlights of the SHL and marveling at Max Carnage's MVP season.

Seeing the competition of the SHL only spurs Duke more to improve and climb his way into the greatest league in the world.

What better way impress the scouts than fill some nets with pucks eh?

The Kraken had their work cut out for themselves for most of the regular season. We finished 25-35-6 and 14th overall in the SMJHL which was not a stellar performance. However towards the end of the season, the Kraken started to gain some traction and the investment in the rookies started to payoff. With half the team consisting of rookies, the young guns became an important part of the team's success. The locker-room knew that the team is on the up and up and wants to stay consistent and keep progressing week to week. Although the team didn't do any thing crazy different for the playoffs; the team did recognize the hard work of everyone and held a beach day get-together to decompress and refocus the mind before playing a series with the Colorado Raptors. With their minds refocused, the Kraken are ready to take on the postseason and surprise the league with an upset series win!

Because we were able to clinch our playoff berth so early this season, Maine's preparation for the playoffs has been strategic and methodical. With the luxury of time, we have shifted from striving to secure a spot to perfecting the game plan and team performance. Homework was first done in a serious way on each of our playoff opponents. We watched a lot of game tape, trying to pick apart styles and strengths in order to find the weaknesses that we could take advantage of. This information provided a basis for our tactical changes, which empowered us to formulate a well-rounded approach toward each game. Training has, therefore, become more specific, focusing on physical conditioning and honing of skills in equal measure. High-intensity drills were, therefore, created as close to the pressure cooker of the playoffs to get the players ready for the mental and physical demands that lie ahead. We also worked on team unity. We had regular strategy meetings and held team-building exercises in order to bolster cohesion and put everyone on the same page. Of course, with all these put together, Maine is well prepared and ready for a deep playoff run for nothing less than the championship title.

Our team, the Nevada Battleborn spent hours reviewing film on our previous games, hit the weight room and continued drilling hard. Kiwi attended boxing classes in order to improve upon their fighting prowess, continuing their reign of undisputed heavyweight champion of the SHJML.

Reviewing film for our playoff match ups was essential towards our planning to work towards the championship. I had previously stated earlier in the season that I deemed Ottawa our biggest rival. So, you could imagine my thoughts facing them in the first round. NBB needs to focus on the consistency of our performances. Winning faceoffs is an essential part of winning hockey games so, being aware of this all of NBBs centers worked tirelessly on the ice to assure we would have the best chance possible to control play and play our style of hockey which has always been putting pucks on net, controlling the puck in the corners and playing hard.

Hopefully this style of play will prove successful in our upcoming playoff series!

The Walleye know they aren't entering these playoffs as the favorites by any means, but they've really done well in preparing a systematic form of play that focuses on shut down defense. As we saw in the first round against Anchorage, the team played exceptionally well defensively and was also supported by some top notch goaltending from Grant Berd. From there, the Walleye also played a very disciplined style of game that relied on not putting yourself in a position where you might make a reckless play that would result in a penalty. I believe the Walleye only surrendered three (3) opposing power plays, and were effective in shutting those down. Of course, Teddy Bloos fit this mold pretty well. A defensive specialist, Bloos worked tremendously on rounding out his game, refining his game on the penalty kill, while also thinking more creatively on how to generate chances for himself in the offensive zone by getting open.

Yeah I think our whole team prepared for the playoffs differently and in the same way. We first took a trip up the interstate and stayed at a holiday inn express. The hie was right next to a Dave and busters so we went there and got appetizers and played some games. Then, back at the hotel, we used the pool. The pool had a water slide and a lazy river. It was a little cold but it was relaxing. We spent the night and went home in the morning.

Some teammates prepared in different ways. Woodsy (lumbermouth) collected sticks along our trip and before game 1 soaked them in essential oils and used burned them as they were incense. Spicy Dijon (Anderson) made everyone friendship bracelets but coach said we couldn’t wear them during the game. Burly Earl (Biggins) wanted to start with a clean slate so he went into Chinatown and got a head to toe hair wax treatment. He would’ve missed game 1 from the pain had he not stayed in the lazy river overnight when we were at the holiday inn express.
All in all we prepared in some odd and unique ways but I’d say we are doing all right. Cheers mate.

Honestly, we did not prepare any different from how we played in the regular season. Sure, it started as a bit of a struggle but us getting the 5th seed proves we're 1 of the better tier teams and we proved it by comfortably dispatching QCC in the first round and taking a 3-1 lead so far against the fish team I forget the name of. Thanks to treating it like just another game that the Knights are hungry to win!

Most likely Maine win it all cause they are the best team by far but upsets happened all the time, so perhaps that happens in 1 of the rounds. I am just proud we kept our cool at 1-1 vs QCC and managed to prepare and plan correctly to beat the enemy. Who is to say we couldn't be the one that ends up upsetting Maine? Well probably the sim engine but still! We're doing great so far!
