It's the night before Draft Day. Abbe Wass has a hard time sleeping. His Thoughts are all over the place. Thoughts about who he will be drafted by. At what pick will he be drafted, Will he even be drafted? There are plenty of good defensive players in this draft. All the journalists, all the scouts these last couple of days and weeks. Every meeting, every handshake, everything builds up to tomorrow.
Abbe tosses and turns in the bed as he plays tomorrow over and over in his head. What if he somehow doesn't exist in this draft as well. What if he doesn't get drafted at all, what should he do with his life? Who is Abbe Wass without hockey? He shakes off the bad thoughts and instead he tries to imagine the different scenarios about what could happen tomorrow. What if he gets picked at first. That would be an awesome accomplishment. And with Minnesota being one of the teams that did do an interview it is not a completely insane thought. But Abbe would probably fall or trip on the stairs on the way up to the stage. It would be the first time in his life he would be first choice by a team and have everyone's eyes on him, and of course he would celebrate it by ruining it with a fall. But boy would it be an honor to be first. The pressure would be hard. The pressure could become unbearable. But Abbe would probably take the pressure in the right way. But it's probably not likely that the Minnesota Monarchs pick Abbe as their first pick. This spot is probably reserved for a player with parts of the legs that are hurting, or possibly some center. He could on the other hand end up as the second overall pick, and became a member of the Chicago Syndicate. They also did reach out for a scouting interview. But would he fit Chicago, would Chicago fit Abbe? Well yes, probably. Abbe is pretty easy going, at least probably easy going enough to fit in Chicago. But once again, it's pretty unlikely that he gets picked in second place. Even with one less player to choose between, it will take a minor miracle for Abbe Wass to go as second overall draft pick. Barcus Juneau, Hip Hurts, Dieter Früstück and Kiwi Söderberg-Snooks are all defensive players that probably should go higher than Abbe Wass. Two of them are teammates and they are real hard workers, they deserve to go higher. The other two have been a pain to play against. They probably also should go a little higher. The self esteem goes lower and lower the more Abbe thinks about the competition in the draft class. Abbe turns the pillow around to the cool side. the eyelids get heavier and he falls to sleep. But pretty soon he wakes up. And he does it with haste. The dream wasn't pleasant. It was about to be the last call in the draft and Abbe was the only one left. but the team said pass and he was left undrafted. So now when he is wide awake again the midnight thoughts keep on rolling. Winnipeg Aurora, with the number 7 and 9. Is another team in the draft order that established contact. Abbe could make some real difference in Winnipeg, their defensive line up is in dire need for more players. Abbe could even step in the top 6 as the team looks right now. But is it fun to be the worst and youngest player in a team? Might be. Maybe the situation could lead to a lot of playtime and development. But then again, how likely is it that Winnipeg chooses Abbe at the 7. And it's even more unlikely that they will call him up the same season. That is a real long shot. Pick number 8 is Edmonton Blizzards. A team that not only sent one scout to interview Abbe, but two! Even though Edmonton barely is in the need of defense. The nightly thoughts pretty fast goes right past Edmonton as the gut feeling says they will choose a forward. The teams that got picks 11, 12 and 13 also did a little bit of interviewing. With various results according to the face expressions they made when they left. But on one hand the Buffalo Stampede really seemed interested. And green has always been a color that suits Abbe well. Maybe this could be the one place Abbe will go to. But then again. There are a lot of people that fight to be picked as fast as possible. And with those words echoing in his mind Abbe turns over the pillow to the cool side once more. Takes a deep breath and when the final air flows out of his lungs he is once again asleep. And this time he doesnt wake up any more. at least not until the alarm clock rings and it's time for breakfast and getting ready for finding something to do that's both fun and relaxing. Something that takes away the mind from the anxiety of the draft, but still keeps it sharp enough to enjoy every moment of it. And not to forget putting out the outfit for the event. should it be the blue tuxedo, the black smoking or perhaps the beige three piece suit. The options are endless and it will take some time for Abbe to decide. (914 Words)
