The SMJHL season is about to start, after we all got a taste of juniors hockey with preseason. In the 7-game span of preseason, teams got a pretty good look into what to expect, and also who the key contributors are likely to be. How is your team looking ahead of this season, and who are gonna be the main pieces of your squads?

Written Option: Talk about how your team is looking ahead of the coming season. Include at least 3 players who will be key to the success of the team, plus an explanation why they will be crucial. Must include 150 words.

Graphic Option: Create a magazine cover style graphic with a headline for the team, plus a render for a key player on your team's squad. Make sure to identify which player the render is supposed to be in the graphic.

You will receive 3 TPE for fulfilling all the requirements for any of the options. (You only need to do one of the options to get the credit and wont get additional credit even if you do more than one).

All responses are due on Sunday, October 20th at 11:59 PST. NOTE: IF YOU SUBMIT/EDIT AFTER THE DEADLINE YOU WILL RECEIVE REDUCED/NO TPE.

I am playing for the Ottawa Highlanders, which I believe will have a big upswing this season with some great additions in the rookie core and some older players ready to make the next big step. I believe there will be an improvement across the board but mainly we're looking at some great new additions from the current draft class.

The 5 ft 11 in, 210 lbs. centerman Peyton Campeau have put on a lot of muscles in the off-season, and is ready to have an break-out season. In the pre-season he managed to double his points comparing to previous pre-seasons, and led the team by a margin. With an 43% shooting percentage, we're looking at an shoot first mentality player, if paired with a proper playmaker will light up the league this season.

For our next player we don't need to look no further than Mr. Lunch himself, Hotdog Lunch!
The right winger, standing at 6 feet tall 190 lbs. will have a great pairing with Peyton, where the few snipes that don't find it's target will be swooped up by Peyton and put in the net. Truly a fearful combo.

And for our dark horse, we set our aim at Rookie Leo Carlsson. He comes in the league with a bit of mystery, picked at 5OA and great versatility.
Lowest ice-time on the team, but still managed point per game, with 5 goals 2 assists. He even showed of a bit of a goonery with a fight win. Are the we seeing the Highlanders discover a physical threatening 2-way? I believe so!

It’s been a good pre-season finishing 3rd. That finish might be a bit deceptive as Quebec scored 40 goals on a questionably sustainable shooting %. Letting in 29 goals with a goaltender averaging a putrid .849 SV% is not a good sign. If the saving % can come up to at least a reasonable .880 it might be enough to offset the likely fall the team will have in its scorching hot shooting %. Quebec has shown some signs of being able to hang in the top but we’ll see if it can be sustained over a whole season.

3 Key players are: Cristoforo Roccamontepiano, QCCBOT4, and Rodwin Dionicio.

Roccamontepiano was Quebec’s leading scorer last season and the team will rely on the center matching and improving on last season's totals. Playing in their last SMJHL season, Roccamontepiano is as good as anyone in the league gets. Lethal in offense and good in defense, likely to be one of the top stars for Quebec and Quebec will need them to perform at their best over the season.

QCCBOT4: Quebec has many goalies in the system but the starting gig will either go to QCCBOT4, Solberg, or be split by those two. QCCBOT4 has gotten all the starts in the pre-season and looks ready to start the season in the net. Struggling with a .849 SV% through 7 pre-season games, Quebec will need better goaltending if the team has any ambitions to try and fight for the Cup.

Rodwin Dionicio: The 1st overall pick in the draft has already been pressed into top power play duties. The depth at defense is not good for Quebec. The team needs their rookies to all perform and grow quickly to assist the team this season. Dionicio has been tapped as the unlikely PP1 quarterback and if the two-way rookie can put up good numbers in offense it can help mask some of the team's defending woes.

For this upcoming season for the Carolina Kraken, we probably aren't going to be making too many waves with how our current roster is shaping up compared to the rest of the league, however this will be a season to see what line combinations work out the best to develop some chemistry (since FHM 8 line chemistry is very crucial for sim success).

To highlight some of the Kraken top players that will be key for success would be the following:

Swedish Chef - Carolina's longest tenured players on the active roster and will be their final in the juniors before going up to the Montreal Patriotes. The young roster will be looking up to Swedish Chef to cook them up some delicious meals and hopefully be cooking out on the ice too, they will be utilized in almost every aspect of the game for the Kraken this season.

Leighton Oligny - Carolina's top TPE forward will be entering the season at a capped 425 TPE so they will be looking to have more impact while playing out there this season, it will be interesting who the Carolina coaches pair them up with.

Kim Chaewon - Carolina's 3rd OA pick from this past S79 junior's draft is entering their rookie season hungry and looking to grace the SMJHL with their athletic ability and poise. She will be a key piece for Carolina in the coming years.

The Newfoundland Berserkers and the big three. The ‘serks squad has an elite top pairing in Jett Labyrinth ( C ), Jason Bourne (LW) and The Great One (RW) and let me breakdown how each one of them is bringing their own special concoction to put down the opposing team. First, you have the sturdy center, Mr. Labyrinth (@Magenta) whose mitts are so silky and mesmerizing, you’d think the puck is a fushigi ball and his stick is David Bowie himself. Next, you have Jason Bourne (@SFresh3), who is literally killing the competition. Seriously, there are still some Juniors that have not been found since preseason started. Oh yeah, and he sniped 4 goals in preseason. (@TheGreatOne), ever heard of him? They say we can’t all be gretzky’s and ride jet skis, well this man can and does. With 7 points in the preseason and his daughter Paulina boosting locker room morale, The Great One is going to be a key chip in this team’s run for the cup. He knows a few things about cups, B cups, C cups, D cups – you’re gonna want to hide your loved ones when he’s on the ice.

Although the Colorado Raptors preseason started off rough, 1-2, they ended with a balanced 3-1-1 (Finishing 10th oa by the end). I believe that the Raptors have a great roster with the combination of some older players along with this new draft class that has been brought in. I feel like once we get the tactics more sorted out, we are in for a fun season!

Baron Samedi: The starting center lead the team in points going 5-5-10 with an incredible +/- of 5. You can really tell that he is a vocal point in the 1st line of the forwards when it comes to getting things done.

Raw Cheese McPickle: The star winger finished 2-4-6, and complimented that off by leading the team in Defensive Rating with a score of 83, and tied Tiny Princess in leading blocks for the team with 11.

Kral King: The 2nd line forward finished by leading the team with a great big 29 hits (3rd in the J) which is critical to getting possession

Arvinder Singh had quite the showing for the Nevada Battleborn, having a point per game through 7 games, showing a great offensive side that will hopefully show during the season. Coming in top 3 for total minutes, top 3 for power play time, and 5th for pk time, he will be crucial to the special teams this upcoming year.

Badger Hennessy, with a crazy showing in the pre-season, with 6 goals in 7 games and an immaculate 30% shooting, the Battleborn will be looking to him for that shot this season. 3 Even strength, 2 powerplay, and 1 short handed goal, proving that he can get it done whenever he’s on the ice, which will be a problem for SMJHL defenders.

Slava Kasyanenko is a great all around player, racking up 7 points, with 4 goals and 3 assists, as well as leading the team in plus/minus, showing off a great defensive game. Like Badger, Slava was a threat to opposition goalies with a shooting percentage of 26.7, showing the Battleborn have quite the team to build on

After the completion of the preseason and scoring 6 or more goals in 6 of the 7 games combined with multiple 50+ shots outings it's clear QCC will be an all out offensive team. With all of this focus on offense while having 3 rookie defensmen on the roster Quebec City will rely alot on the performance of their two goalies: QCCBOT4 and Ela Solberg. They have to be absolute brickwallls to allow the rest of the team play run and gun. Luckily if the preseason turns out to be a reliable indicator they're allowed to let in up to 5 goals a night and still get away with the "W" most of the time. Meanwhile the Quebec offense is getting carried by its Top Line consisting of: Andrea Morandi, Cristoforo Roccamonepiano and Randolph Thompson-Smythe. During the preseason those 3 were not only the line with the most Letters but probably also with the most points, combining for 16 goals, 23 assists and 39 points in only 7 games. However on some nights the topline can't win a game alone. Everyteam needs scoring depth. Surprisingly this is where Rookie and recent Draftee Shiny Rainbow enters the picture. The speedster turned alot of heads by tying veteran Andrea Morandi for the team lead in 5 on 5 points while also being 2nd on the team by collecting 26 hits on the way. Both of them finishing the preseason with 4 goals and 5 assists in 7 games at even strenght.

So: Goaltending + Top Line + Depth Scoring = Championship

Falcons Falcons Falcons

If preseason is any indication, the Detroit Falcons are looking to be a mid to upper team this season. We finished preseason with a 4-3 record, which was good enough for 9th out of the 16 teams.

As it stands, we have four players who should be standouts as they are our highest TPE - Theo Kane (F), Elliot Alderson (D), Roquefort Cotswold (D), and Smitty Werbenjaegermanjensen (D). As you can see, we have an experienced, solid defensive core. This will be the bread and butter of our team this season. Our offense is a little greener than our defense is, but should still be competitive. Our goaltending is on the lower TPE side, although Mark Andrew Flower (G) came out of his first two performances of the season with the 2nd best league-wide save percentage, so who really knows?

Overall, I expect us to make the playoffs as a bubble team, finishing somewhere between 6th-9th in the league.

I'm a little late to the party, but the waiver saga is over! I am now a member of the great Vancouver Whalers, who are just 1 season removed from winning it all in S77. Success, however, comes at a mighty cost, and that cost was a multitude of players from that championship team making the jump to the big leagues. If that wasn't enough of a loss for ya, they then AGAIN lost more players to call ups just this off-season, and now are left with 4 remaining players from that championship team.

How is the outlook this year for Vancouver? If we're being honest, it's going to be a tough one. The team is now loaded with young players looking to continue their development, as well as a few rookies (myself included) that are just getting started. While the future looks bright for Vancouver, the upcoming year will be an uphill battle to find cohesion amongst a group of young players who are still finding their identity in the league.

But the best championship victories are never the ones won by the dominant teams. The best championships are won by the underdog, the teams that were counted out from the get go, only to battle through the adversity to rise above the rest.

And you can bet your ass that we're gunning for that championship.

The Whalers will ride or die on the backs of their core 4, who will be expected to carry the load and show the rookies exactly what makes Vancouver the championship winning team that it is. And no success can be sustained without a goalie who can take over games.

1. Oliver Cornwall
One of the 4 remaining players from Vancouver's championship winning team, Oliver has made the transition from defense to forward this year, playing RW on Vancouver's top line. Not only is the team relying on the veteran leadership from players like Cornwall, but Cornwall themself will need to adjust on the fly to a brand new position on the ice. If Cornwall can make the transition seamlessly, then you can rest assured that Vancouver will be a competitive team in what will be their final season in the SMJHL.

2. Trevor Lopez
Another one of the veterans from the championship squad, Trevor will make the jump back to the left side of the defense in hopes of continuing to anchor a tough, hard to play against top pairing in Vancouver. Trevor will need to continue being a leader on this team, and will share the responsibility of showing the young defensemen on this team how to play the position at this level. Trevor is also in the final year of their tenure in the SMJHL, and will surely be looking to prove that they're ready to make the jump to the SHL.

3. David Vent
The other half of the monstrous top pair, David Vent is the 3rd of our veterans from the championship squad on our list. Like the others, David will set out to show that they're ready to play in the big league, as they are in their final season in the SMJHL. David will be looking to continue to improve on their offensive game from the blue line, and will surely be expected to shoulder some more responsibilities offensively to make up for the loss of players from call ups.

4. Ville Sato-Maki
Ville is going into their 3rd year in Vancouver, and seems primed to becoming the leader of this team following the departures of the previously mentioned players at the end of this season. Anchoring the left side wing, Ville will need to continue to show off the skills that allowed them to become an important piece of the championship squad in just their rookie season in the SMJHL. They should also expect to become a more important voice in the locker room, as they will be the longest tenured player on Vancouver next season, provided they don't make the jump to the SHL early.

5. Trent Mackenzie
What can you say about goalies that hasn't already been said? A hockey team is only as good as it's goaltending, and Trent will have to carry the load in the net in his rookie season. Trent had a fantastic season by my goaltending metrics, posting a .900sv% in 7 games, and showing flashes of the elite potential they have in preseason games against Anchorage (.960sv%) and Nevada (.940sv%). If Trent can continue this form, than you can expect one of the all time great rookie seasons for a netminder in the SMJHL to be coming, as well as a dominant year for Vancouver.

It's clear that Vancouver has the pieces to be a contender this year. It'll be up to the rookies on the team to show that, not only do they belong in this league, but that they are absorbing the knowledge they're gaining and putting that information to good use, and it will be up to the veterans on this team to guide the ship to victory.

There is a lot of excitement with the beginning of the season for the Walleye. It is our second season in Thunder Bay and we want to improve on last year’s result. The pre-season did not go exceedingly well as the team went 0-4-3 but those games do not mean much! The real season is just beginning.

If the team is going to do well then a couple of players will need to step into the limelight.

1. Grant Berd - Goalie
How Berd goes, so will the Walleye. Coming off a slightly disappointing sophomore season Berd will hope to rebound back to the levels he showed during his rookie year.

2. Jon Garfield - Centre
Garfield took a step forward last year and led the team in points. This will have to continue if the Walleye are to be successful

3. Jack Ellul - Defence
I'm a little biassed here but as a top ten pick there is an expectation that Jack will be able to step directly into the lineup.

After the first day of simming the team looks very solid and off to a great start! After having 7 points in the first three games, Peyton Campeau is taking the season by the horns and leading his team to victories. On the defensive end Cheese N'Wine looks to be a minute munching defensemen with great stamina and passing netting him 2 assists in the game vs Colorado! There are a duo of rookies who aim to play the best game they can in Leo Carlsson and Pavel Mintyukov. Leo Carlsson bursts onto the scene looking to be a solid all around player who throws their body around. Lastly, Rookie Pavel Mintyukov who aims to be a solid Two-Way Defensemen and give solid passes to those up front while holding down the fort in their own end. Pavel Mintyukov is also looking to be a dynamic fighter trying to get his Highlanders back to high energy hockey. A little Old-School punching match never brought anyone down.

After the completing the preseason For the Nevada BattleBorn the key players that are going to be important for the teams success are

Yuri Boyka - Yuri is our engine for the offence and our veteran when it comes to our offence he has big role to fill for the offence that is full of younger players

Akira Suzuki- Our goalie is going have a massive role to play for our success this season with a younger team and young line blue line Akira will be pretty busy between the pipes we are going to look to him to bail us out

Hip Hurts- He is our longest tenured defensemen and will be guiding the the new flock he will be setting the tone to the for the younger defensemen that are on the team

These 3 players are going to be very key for the success for the BattleBorn even though it is a rebuilding year you still want to do good

One thing the preseason showed is that the Quebec City Citadelles have a lot of potential. There was a lot of firepower on display that was remarkably accurate, too. Goaltending had a bit of rough go, but that is most likely due to a lack of experience in front of them. The rookies have to grow quickly into their roles, but early indications point to quite a bit of potential there as well. Another area of improvement is the PK with a meager 69,2 % rate. Success and a chance of playoff action will also rely heavily on the more seasoned team members. Especially Cristoforo Roccamontepiano, Andrea Morandi and Randolph Thompson-Smythe had a very solid seven games and can hopefully built on those performances going into the season. As for the D, the younger core will look up to the experience and leadership of Peter, who lead them in points and general performances. Five wins and 40 goals is in any case a confidence builder and we will hopefully see great things from the team. Alles les Citadelles !
