S79 PT #2: Person's Best Friend Due: Sunday, October 27th @ 11:59 PM PST
#76

prompt 1: Okay so the thing about Lias is that he really doesn't like to be responsible for the well-being of anyone but himself. That's not to say he doesn't like to help his friends, but there's a reason he has zero interest in having children; he doesn't want anyone or anything to depend entirely on him for their life and sustenance. That includes pets. So if Lias has to vote for a team pet, he's probably going to vote for something incredibly low-maintenance, like a fish that can live in any kind of water and doesn't care what you put in its tank, or a cat that just sort of skulks around and maybe catches mice but on the whole is completely indifferent to the team. Lias probably gets outvoted though, and they probably end up with an actually-cool pet like a very nice cat that looks like a panther, or one of those dogs that's being trained to be a service dog or something. Also, it's named Carl, obviously.

Option 1: A loyal companion is the best gift on Earth. The only sad thing is that dogs and cats pass well before their time! Because that would bring much crying and sadness, and that may overall effect how well the team does, of course an animal with a crazy long life span must be chosen. This makes me think first off of tortises and of parrots. Although a quick google search tells me there is an "animal" called a glass sponge that lives like super duper long but I don't think the team would enjoy it all that much since it doesn't seem very friendly or interactable. A parrot is probably going to be our best bet. I mean, I have heard that you can train them to talk and stuff and what would be funnier than a parrot trash talking your opponent? "Squawk you all SUCK Squawk." Team captains oldest born child typically takes care of it and it rides around on their shoulder 24/7. Squawk!

Our mascot would likely be 1 of 2 things.

1) My current cat Doug - he is one of the easiest going and cuddliest cats I have ever known. He is slightly dumb as far as cats goes but is smart enough to catch mice if there is any - but dumb enough to starve because he cant eat out of a slow feed bowl. He loves love and people and would always be around in the locker room to give cuddles to anyone who needed it.

2) We would have to get a black lab. Why Black specifically? I don't know I have owned 2 now so I have a bias for that particular colour. They are the most social and easy going breed ever and I have yet to meet someone who isnt naturally afraid of the dogs think a lab is any bit intimidating. It would be a great mascot for kids and be able to be trained well to behave and always be an upstanding team mate.

WRITTEN OPTION 2

Everyone on the team plays their role, even if they aren't on a coaching staff or bench. Personal trainer is very important for Aumy Junior II, because he allows him to get better individually. He thinks it's very important, because that's how he can get better than others. Personal trainer of Toronto ''North Stars'' has been very professional and he might be on of the main reasons why team is doing so good. He knows exactly what each player needs and he makes them improve at the highest level. Physiotherapist is helping as well, but he is the guy who is working off the ice. Aumy Junior II is trying to have a professional relationship with each person on the squad, but it's obvious that they are very friendly and almost like a family. You just can't be otherwise in hockey. It's a team sport and team has to support each other to achieve the highest goals. That's how Toronto ''North Stars'' work!

Quote: Nothing compares to the joy of coming home to a loyal companion, or so does your GM think as they come up with the idea to boost morale of the team and to get a mascot for the team with one move. So they will get a team pet (if there already isn't one), but they let players pick what it will be. So what kind of pet will it be? What will it be called? Does it just hang around the arena or training facilities or will it go into the locker or even join the team on bench (I’m pretty sure there is no rule in SHL forbidding gooses from the bench)? Who takes care of it? Will there be dedicated staff for it or will it spend a week with each player?

I feel like this answer practically writes itself for a player on the Yukon Malamutes. We would select a chicken! No I'm kidding, we would most obviously get a badass Malamutes, but probably a pair of them so they have a friend and another buddy to play with. The breed would be Alaskan Malamute and we would name the pair Gretzky & Jagr. They will most certainly hang around the arena and training facility where they'd primarily live. They'll have dedicated "cubbies" in the locker room w/ their food and beds. They'll even travel with the team when they go to play out of town on the bus or plane! As far as taking care of it, we'd get a dedicated person whose sole job was to attend to the pups and make sure they had all the care and love they possibly need. Going home every week with a different player to a different house would be stressful, so thats why they would live at the training facility. But they would get acclimated to being personable and meeting people very early on in their lives. It would be an awesome opportunity to highlight the team, but to also visit kids in hospitals, seniors in assisted living and hype fans up everywhere!

Written option 1:

Nevada GMs JFK and Fancey decided to boost team morale, and what better way to honor the Battleborn players then by getting them an actual ram as a pet. The team will likely name it Grond after the battering ram from lord of the rings, but personally I think that makes the ram sound evil, and we want it to a good ram. The team will let grond run loose in the opponents’ locker room, destroying it and being a bit liberal with its use as a bathroom. Combined that with the Nevada desert heat, and the fact that the team cut the AC to the opponents’ locker room, and it makes for a very unpleasant visitor experience for other teams. Grond will absolutely be on the bench with the team during games. The team set up a nice area with outdoor space for grond to live in, but team captain Slava Kasyanenko insisted on bringing him home to live with him instead, and they commute together to games and practices.

Having an entourage of support for any person yet alone athlete is very important, a support system that can keep them firing on all cylinders or help recoup and recover when things aren't going as planned. For Jeyeff Effo, this entourage is just 1 person, maximum effort and efficiency. This individual has a plethora of experience in a wide range of professions and disciplines. He has been a doctor before so any time Jeyeff Effo needs medical attention whether it be for an injury or just wear and tear prevention, he has been there for him. He has been an astronaut and a psychiatrist, so he knows what it is like to be under pressure and can help guide Effo through tough times. He's been a plumber, so any time Effo clogs his toilet from the massive bowel movements he has due to his high protein diet. He's even been a step-dad, so anytime Effo needs to work through his daddy issues, he has someone to lean on. An added bonus is this person is also bald, they can rub their bald heads together to form an everlasting bond of friendship and trust. This person is Johnny Sins.

Option 2:

Beck's favorite non-coaching staff are Arnie the Doorman and Beatrice the PA announcer. Arnie always greets Marcel with a smile and a joke and lifts his spirits in order to do well in the upcoming games. Arnie has been working for Winnipeg since the early days of season 10 or so (no one knows because he's so old). We love him anyways. As for Beatrice, she is the best PA announcer in the SHL. She has the best method of delivery for goals and gets the crowd pumped. In the back, when not on duty, she'll joke with the players and tell them that if they don't score, she may or may not butcher their name when they finally do score. She has been known on occasion to heckle the players while they are practicing on home ice, which gets a positive reaction from the players. Beck likes all the staff, but those two stand out as the best two around.

For the Maine Timber, in just name alone, nothing will be more perfect for the team pet than a Maine Coon cat. They named the male cat Timber, and he stayed with the team in the locker room during games. The team debated on what to do in terms of who to give the cat to in between games, and just decided that the best thing to do was to just have the cat stay with each player during alternating weeks. Timber is super sweet, but he does have a bit of a scratching problem that almost messed up Darby's couch. So to rectify this, they got him a scratching post that looks like a tree.

At times, Timber would be shown to the fans during meet and greets, and was a very calm day when people are allowed to pet him. Some of the staff also help take care of him, with many of them bringing cat toys and food for him. He isn't allowed on the bench during games however, as that loud of a crowd might be a problem for him.

New Orleans has always had an unofficial mascot in Bailey the dog. Bailey has been a mainstay around the arena since the inauguration of the Specters. While the morale has always been good, you best believe when Bailey wonders into the locker room, everyone’s moods go through the roof. You may be asking yourself, that is a long time for a dog to be alive, and you would be right. At this point, Bailey is a ghost. Helps that we are a spooky team to embrace the ghost dog. Since it is a ghost, there is no need to feed, water, or really anything else related to care. Our local witch doctors are trying to make it so we can actually pet him, but so far tests have been negative. During home games, Bailey can be seen in a couple different places. Sometimes when a goal is scored Bailey will bark in the rafters! All in all, Bailey has been a wonderful addition to the team.

I don't subscribe to the theory that some members are more valuable than others. Every coworker that I have had the pleasure of knowing over my long career is vital. The cleaning staff ensures that we all get to work in a pleasant and sanitary environment. Everyone is picking the shiny and clean building over the rubdown dilapidated one and that is why I always shout out my custodial masters.

As much as I love my teammates, the guy playing 10 minutes a night (me) doesn't have more value than the scout who has been on the road for 8 straight months. A scout who lived out of a suitcase, out of their car is the reason that I was drafted many years ago. Someone who hasn't seen their loved ones and missed every family event just to watch some punk kids sling picks around stood up at a meeting and said I was worth something. All my coworkers are vital to our success and I love them dearly.

Earl was heading to the rink for some much needed practice, film, and off ice training. On the drive in Earl was thinking of something that could cheer him up at the rink in between work outs. A lightbulb went off in his head as he began to think of the name of the team he plays for "The Malamutes". Having a Malamute as the obvious mascot for the team is clearly the choice. Not only would it be a positive thing for fans but it would be awesome to get off the ice and have a dog running rampant in the locker room. It would boost moral for the guys and quite possibly get Earl a chance at conversing with the ladies after the games.

As Earl entered the ice rink he caught up with his GM to discuss this mascot idea with him and the GM seemed to think it was a great idea and would like to figure out a way to implement it. Earl may be thinking selfishly. But it would really be a good thing for everyone involved.

Written Option 2:

The most important person for Weston Windsor is almost certainly the physiotherapist. Although he doesn't play an overly physical game, his stark decline last season helps to show the impact that injuries can have on a player even in their early career. Throughout the entire off-season, he worked with team doctors and physiotherapists to try to help fix his knees after his strange skating style -- one regarded as quick, but which placed disproportionate stress on the inside of his joints -- began to cause excessive wear and tear on his body. Weston claims that the work of the physio and medical team has helped him prepare for the much larger burden of higher ice-time this season.

While his play still isn't lighting the world on fire, Windsor looks to be as healthy as a player of his age should be, and looks to be in good condition to make the jump to the SHL proper next season. Without the kind of focused attention that a proper medical staff can offer, Windsor's career might have risked an early end as his natural athleticism began to fail to account for his oft-reckless play.
