Deep Dive #2: This SMJHL Season

Let talk about this season as whole. Quebec City, and Colorado are in the finals with other teams that came so close like Maine. Now as far as stats go. It was an insane season from a scoring stand point. Multiple players with the 70+ point range. Insane offensive potential. Looking at a high scoring season it does not mean we didn’t see good defense. We had some solid defensive teams as well, but the main aspect is the fact that we had a Point and Goal scoring battle between Pulkkinen and Cristoforo.

The battle was so an enticing one. Cristoforo lead most of the way, but Pulk came around near the middle of the season and it went back and forth from there. Now the interesting thing is trying to see who could honestly win the battle. Part of the reason it was so enticing is Quebec City and Maine were also in a race for first place in SMJHL Standings. That hasn’t been seen in a bit. It’s now conclusive that this season like any other was electrifying.

Now let’s look at some stats shall we? Pulk lead the league in goals with 55, Cristoforo came in second with 52, and O’Nayse came in 3rd with 50. Doug Weight lead in Assists with 79, Cristoforo with 66, and Koala came in 3rd with 64 total assists. Now when you add up the math Cristoforo with an insane total of 118 points. Unreal line to come across, you don’t see that many points very often. O’Nayse with 112 Points, and Pulkkinen and Weight with 109 points total. Now unfortunately for defense no one averaged under 3 goals a game. Kind of a left down when it comes to defense. Most people like 2.50 ish, but if everyone is doing it. It just means that the offensive power has become elite and the defense needs to work their way into limiting the high danger chances going into next season.

We are unfortunately losing some of the best players to the SHL as a whole. It has been without a doubt a fun season to watch. I’ve never seen a season where we have had 5 100 Point+ getters in a season, but again. Elite play, high octane, high speed, high intensity.

When you look at the defensive side we even had a defenseman almost get 70 points. It’s unreal to see the offensive upside for all players on the ice where defense sort of takes a back seat, but hey we love offense. The fans love offense. It keeps them engaged all the way through every game. It keeps them on their toes.

If we look at Goalies stats as far as Sv% Saves and GAA. Sv% no one was in the 91% range the highest being 90.9%. We can conclude that defense and goalies might not be as good, but it’s almost certainly because of the changing of the game offensively.

Now we also had 6 players with over 200 shots blocked. A ton of blocked shots through out our season, but it doesn’t save everything. Some of these shots get ripped from anywhere and it is without a doubt the greatest time to be a SMJHL fan.

“The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth comes again. ... There are neither beginnings nor endings to the Wheel of Time. But it was a beginning.”
