I fully expect Edouard Lavoie to take the next step for France this year alongside Atlanta Inferno teammate, Mia Lavoie. I also fully expect France to continue improving this year and pushing for a medal yet again, despite drawing the group of death this year. It will be very tough to compete in this group, but France has a great mix of youth and experience to make it happen and to push deep into the medal rounds and vie for the gold. The French federation has worked hard to cultivate a winning team, and their play on the ice over the past few seasons has really shown how much they have improved. Expect to see them taking home medals in the very near future.

During their 20 seasons in league Philadelphia has never missed the playoffs. Which is impressive but still there are other teams with longer playoffs streaks, while other teams clean the house others try to stay afloat and do a retool while still staying in playoffs, both with varying successes. Out of last 5 Challenge Cup winners both Los Angeles and San Francisco missed playoffs about 6 seasons before they won their cup while New England has been in playoffs since S67. What in your opinion is best way to achieve success in SHL? Is it better to have high but shorter peak or should teams try to aim staying close to top but likely never reaching it for longer, potentially almost indefinitely? Can they somehow do both?

It'd been a very long time since I've been in charge of a team but given how the league works, I think that sustained success is what you want to be going for. You want to keep player engagement high with a healthy, happy locker room so you can retain your best talent. I've been a part of some of the best locker rooms in the league over the years I've been here and the best times to be in any of them have always been when you're winning. Even just having the hope of winning is enough to keep most people happy.

Write your predictions for this year's IIHF tournament or WJC! Tell me about your team! What are your expectations for your player? What teams are you watching out for this time around? Did last season's results surprise you and how much do you expect them to change this time?

The funny thing about the IIHF tournament is that it's pretty hard to predict from year to year. The few things that you can bet on is that Canada will almost certainly medal. A random team who shouldn't have a good hockey team will do surprisingly well and one of the multiple Nordic countries will medal as well. So your guess is as good as mine when it comes to how the tournament will actually play out. Andren is a member of team Sweden and has had the honour to play for them over the majority of his career in the SHL. The homer in me wants to say we're gonna win the gold with ease but I can't say that. We've been so up and down as a team over the last few seasons that I'm just hoping we medal again, though our start isn't making me especially hopeful. However, anything can happen in such a short tournament and Sweden has some awesome players on it. It's entirely possible we go on a run. For my own player, Andren is hitting his prime and it looks like he's being given the time on ice to do what he does best: hit people and score goals. So my expectations are pretty high for him this tournament. Regardless of how team Sweden does, I expect him to be at least top three on the team. Though I'll be a little disappointed if he's not number one on the team in points.

9/ There is a famous saying in European team sports: "buy while you are winning" which of course doesn't quite translate as well to American sports but at the same time it kinda does. Except it should be "draft while you are winning", sure it is easier to draft gems when you are higher up the list but it doesn't mean you can't draft gems further down, it's just more difficult. Even so if a team can constantly find decent to good players in the drafts and they combine that with good tactics along with a good leadership it isn't as difficult to at least constantly make the playoffs as it sounds. And if they are lucky enough to have a couple loyal players that gives their peak to the team they have a really good chance at succeeding in winning cups too. So to keep it short, you gotta always think of the future, especially when you keep winning. Because the further up you are, the bigger you can fall.

10/ It's not that teams don't want to tank anymore or that there would be such a bif shift in mentality. It's more that the league is becoming more and more competitive as there seem to be no easy games anymore. Each and every team can surprise their opponents. Be that by tactics, by luck or by some other factors. The matter of the fact is, the league has never been as competitive as it is right now which is a great thing from a netural perspective. After all with more competitive games, there is simply much more fun to be found in the league.

Jackass Pants and Nanashi Mumei would bring the laughs, but even if the bus breaks down mid-route, Grindle is too entertaining to be stopped.

Task 13:
The SHL community thrives on competition, so why not introduce a new international tournament to spice things up? Grindle is really pissed about Japan not having any goalie and he has something to say. He proposes the Global Invitational Series, a five-nation tournament designed to showcase elite talent from smaller hockey nations or regions that don't typically dominate the IIHF or WJC. Think of it as a way to give underdog nations and blended rosters a chance to shine.

The tournament would feature teams from these 5 regions: Scandinavia (minus Sweden/Finland), Eastern Europe (non-Russia), Asia-Pacific, Western Europe, and North America (outside Canada/USA). Rosters would be crafted from players eligible by heritage, birth, or unique qualification criteria. Potentially, a player might even, while playing for a bigger team in the standard IIHF or WJC, have a heritage team that they would play for in this tournament. It’d offer an opportunity for players who often miss out on the IIHF to represent their roots on an international stage.

This event would take place every two seasons, alternating with the IIHF, to ensure it doesn’t overshadow existing tournaments. The format would feature round-robin play followed by a single-elimination bracket, the same as the IIHF.

2. Gnabe Dabson leads in both goals and points while Tony Soprano is second for both. Is that enough to give offensive advantage to Philadelphia?

I think that it is preposterous that the good people at the SHL Championship Week prompt making factory would even deign to ask this question when they know full well that 3WW Wingmate Roc is on the Philly Forge roster this season. A stand out in the SMJHL for both Quebec and the other team that he was traded to, Wingmate Roc is a standout player both on the ice and off, and if we include the ability to fly, we're including on the ice, on the ground, and in the skies. The Forge have the strongest offence in this playoffs because we have 3WW Wingmate Roc. I think that this question calls into question the integrity of the Championship Week staff, we should not have such biased questions, such misleading questions, and such anti-Roc bias in these. I do think that while Gnabe and Tony Soprano are really good, we (the Forge) might be missing some depth that will give us three consistent lines of scoring this playoffs, especially with our third line looking a bit soft, newer players are going to lead to some lack of production, although our future is bright with so many young stars. I don't even know the opponent's team name or any of their players.

The Forge know that Cale Salad is actually not good enough, which is why 3WW Wingmate Roc may be swapping positions this offseason. While Cale has some good numbers this off-season, it's all unsustainable and lucky, with news swirling about some bribes having been given out to the refs and opposing goalies alike. We'll see how it ends up, but he is not the truth.

6. There were multiple teams that missed out on the finals that were very deserving. Firstly, my homer opinion is that Tampa Bay could easily have gone further. On one hand they finished 8th in the regular season, but they are also coming off a finals appearance and retained a lot of talent as well as added a few key players, such as Zedward, who are hungry for a cup. Additionally, TBB lost to the ultimate runners up. Another simple answer is Texas. They still have incredible talent after another semi finals appearance. They had a strong regular season yet again and the staff clearly knows how to get it done in the playoffs. Maybe luck just didn't go their way. The third team was very surprising and that is LAP. The Panthers failed to even advance past the first round of playoffs, losing to the young Calgary side. I fully expected LAP to contend and potentially even win the whole cup, due to their powerhouse team and winning culture. Back to back is always difficult, as this is now evident. But a team with 2 cups in the last 4 seasons seemed like an obvious choice to compete in the finals and not fall in the first round.

10. I think the potential tanking punishment and rule changes have helped significantly. Teams aren't as sure to gain benefits from tanking as they used to be in the older eras. I think an important note is also the boost in retention the league is seeing and this is allowing stronger picks to be taken from lower positions on the draft board

6. Which team to miss out from the Finals was best in your opinion? Why them?

The Argonauts in my opinion were the best team to not make the finals. They fell in round one to the Texas Renegades, who ended up losing to the eventual winners in the San Francisco Pride. It was always going to be either Texas or Seattle making it to the semi-finals, but I truly believe that if Seattle didn't get upset, they would have had the skills to beat the Pride. I have a few reasons for this claim. My first reason is that the Seattle Argonauts is my team, therefore I am extremely biased. The second reason is that people like upsets. "If a team upsets, doesn't that inherently mean they weren't as good?" Yes. However, I am going to ignore that because the Pride won, and the question is asking about the next best team. My third and final reason is that as I'm writing this, I have a little cold making me a lotta sick. I believe this is clouding my judgement, and perhaps if I weren't as sick, I would be able to recognize that it would actually be good for the Argonauts if I said that Texas was the best team to not make the finals. I will not elaborate because I'm at the wordcount.

SFP was the team that eventually won the cup. It only makes sense because I did a media piece on the Forge about how they keep on forging on or something. In classic reporter's curse, this doomed the team, so I apologize for that. Perhaps if the Forge hired me to make a piece hyping up the Pride it would have gone better for them.

6. Which team to miss out from the Finals was best in your opinion? Why them?

6. To be honest, in this playoffs, there was no one deserving of going to the playoffs except for the two teams that made the finals. There were so much upsets in this playoffs that I can't justify any of the competitive teams. However, teams that I had the most expectations for was the Los Angeles Panthers and the Tampa Bay Barracuda. For the Panthers, it was a huge surprise when the Dragons won in 5 games against them, I know the expectations were mostly from their history of the seasons before, but still that was a big shock. If they did get out of the second round though, I still doubt they would reach the finals as San Francisco is still in their path, but I would imagine it would be pretty close. Secondly I thought about the Barracuda, they were probably the favorite to win the right hand side of the playoff tree, but again Atlanta makes the upset again. How does the Inferno do it every year? What's their secret? Anyways, I believe Tampa had a fair chance of winning the cup. Other than those two, Atlanta actually could have a great chance of winning if it wasn't for Philadelphia. The truth is that all teams have bad matchups and maybe Atlanta could have had an advantage against the Pride if they won the semis. In conclusion, other than Atlanta and maybe Tampa, I don't think there would be another team that could be able to reach the finals. (Truthfully, I think Minnesota could have swept everyone, this was just that one universe)

Personally, I think the Pride would have won 80 percent or more of all series against the Forge. They were just way stronger than not only the Forge, but the whole East side of the playoffs. However, something the Forge could have done differently was to have some better defense or goaltending. The Pride scored 6 goals or more in 3/5 of their games.

As mentioned in the prompt, both of these teams have had somewhat similar paths during the playoffs to get to the Challenge Cup finals. Some might say it's a coin toss on who may hold the edge, but for me, the San Francisco Pride get the nod due to their excellence during the regular season. While winning the Presidents Trophy doesn't really mean all that much at the end of the day, coming into the playoffs and these finals, knowing that you have been the best team in the league all season long, would give the players that extra bit of confidence that your opponents don't have.Now, that doesn't mean that you're guaranteed to win, but it gives you the knowledge that you can win, just do what you have been going all season long. Although, being able to beat the 'best team in the league's especially in the finals, is pretty a pretty friggin amazing thing to play for as well!

First off, that is nuts that Philadelphia has been a playoff team since their inception. I remember when they came into the league and shortly after they did, I stepped away from the SHL for a bit. Finding out today that Philly has missed the postseason that entire time is wild. Good for them, that is pretty sweet. As for how to build a team, I have no clue at all! If I did, I would most likely be be a successful GM in the SHL right now. Personally, building a team from the ground up is something that I feel would build a great team atmosphere and make winning even more special. With the draft we just had in NOLA, I really hope that this is the case!

11. Road Trip

All aboard the Ryland Murphy express! Just kidding. This "suburban dad named player" and one of the biggest busts in the SHL borrowed a huge limousine styled-bus from a decent rock band, whom he is friends with. He offered the entire Chicago Syndicate roster a free ride to catch games 1 and 2 of the Challenge Cup in San Francisco. Considering that he is no social butterfly, Ryland offers to drive so that other teammates have a better bonding experience, and well, Ryland just loves to drive anyways. So they all load up in Chicago, and Ryland is excited to see every player for one last ride until the offseason. Along the way, they check out the Penguins and Sea Lions at the Doorly Zoo and Aquarium in Omaha, Nebraska...They make a stop in Boulder, Colorado to do some shopping at the Pearl Street Mall. It is known to only be available to pedestrians but it also has some pretty kick ass art galleries such as SmithKlein Gallery and Phil Lewis Art, and restaurants like Boulder Chophouse & Tavern, and Boulder Baked. One last stop on the excursion is a visit to Reno, which some people might call it the biggest little city in the world. That stop might solely be for Ryland to play some Texas Hold'em/Omaha, but the team also goes on a tour of the Ferino Distillery. The Cannella Cinnamon Cordial turns out to be a really big hit that Ryland ends up buying a bottle for every player on the team. Finally two days later, at 2 am, they make it past the golden gate bridge in San Francisco and they check in to their suites at the InterContinental, just a half mile walk from where SFP plays.

Yeah, so...San Francisco Pride won the Cup again, and I don't really think it came to a surprise to anyone...Especially when you outscore your opponent 17 to nothing over the course of two games. Even in the NHL, I think its only happened a handful amount of times (if that) that a team has been shut out in a Stanley Cup series, consecutively. I don't know how any team, let alone Philadelphia, would be able to bounce back from something that crazy. Favorite part was when it ended and players that I look up to, like Justin TIme, Viktor Hargreeves, and Rowan O’Beirne got to hoist the cup on their own ice.

4. I don't like to count on goaltending. Base Pack is a great tender, certainly. But when one of your forwards has a bad game, it sucks, but someone else can score. When one of your defense is off tonight, you can limit their minutes. But if your goaltender decides to go on a cold streak, right at the start of the finals the most important hockey of your entire career, YOU. ARE. BONED. Build your team to win with mediocre tending. If you get games like Pack is playing, great. But never count that much on one single player. That's too critical a point of failure.

9. I think a truism of sim sports is that losing seasons lose players. Some players are patient and will stick through a rebuild, but a lot of us don't want to spend our precious career with no glory at all. That means you'd better be one hell of a people manager as a GM, or you're rolling the dice if you slide out of competitiveness. That's why I'm of the opinion that's is better to never go all in on being a favorite, but rather to be a competitor for as many seasons as possible. The playoffs are unpredictable and that rental you picked up could fail to mesh, and then you're out picks or prospects and you just went all in for nothing.

11. Well, my team is in Anchorage, so this is a real Homer's Odyssey you've given us. At least it's all on the west coast. Can we bring three bus drivers and have them go non-stop? Everyone is going to sleep so badly, I don't know how much attention we'll be able to give to the games. I guess we'll stop in Vancouver, that's supposed to be nice, compared to Anchorage, anyways. Hit Seattle up for some desperately needed caffeine. Maybe we can get something concentrated enough that we can reheat it upon arriving in San Francisco and strong enough that it'll zap us awake so as to not fall asleep waiting in line for the bathrooms.

The team that made the finals from the Western Conference, the San Francisco Pride, is one of two teams that I am constantly obsessed with. The other one is Los Angeles. Whenever I have to fill out any kind of predictions thing regarding which teams in the SHL do well, I constantly give these two teams so much love. It's a weird obsession I have. However, I am yet to really be let down by either of them. Both San Francisco and Los Angeles are tremendous organizations and are run by great Sim Hockey Minds. In Los Angeles, the city of movie stars and dumbass traffic, one should not be surprised by the fact that plenty of excellent players can be found up and down their bench. One of them I have an especially big ol' crush on -- Derek Martin. Why do I think so much about Derek Martin? That is because he is on my SHL fantasy team. I'm always pretty bad at SHL fantasy (weh weh weh Reyson doesn't know puck, etc.) and am yet to have a truly successful season there. However, my selection of Derek Martin was truly a masterstroke. He was not only a tremendous part of the limited success I had in SHL fantasy this season, but a huge part of the actual real success LA had in a great season wherein they came up just short.

The Manhattan Rage had made a tremendously terrible mistake. What was that, you may ask? That would be putting Mary Hollywood in charge of organizing their trip to the finals. No, not their trip to *play* in the finals. That would not be happening. That was, of course, a product of their having gotten bounced from the playoffs by the very Philadelphia Forge club that found themselves facing off against San Francisco in the finals. Mary insisted on leading the charge for this road trip, on account of the fact that she wanted to show off her stupid run down old Mitsubishi Montero that she had driven into the ground. The team had seen her driving that thing around already, but Mary would not be swayed. However, Mary was capable of one truly horrific flaw. She could not properly read the schedule. So intrigued was Mary by the fact that part of these finals would be taking place in her own home town of Philadelphia that she neglected to take note of which games were scheduled to take place in which city. As a result, the scheduling of the trip was all off. Somehow, nobody on the team said anything to her. Nonetheless, the team found themselves stepping out of the Montero and not in San Francisco. They were on the wrong side of the country from where the game was taking place that night. RIP.
