The morning of 18th of October, 2046, was pretty usual for William Salming who is in a 10th spot at the all-time list when it comes to games played. He did his basic road game routines at the hotel lobby before heading towards the ice hall. In the evening Buffalo Stampede  Monarchs was supposed to host Hamilton Steelhawks Steelhawks . But there was still something special in the air. During earlier four game home stretch, Salming climbed to 999 career points (1393gp 320+679=999, -197). It was just a matter of time when he would achieve next milestone.

Hamilton lead the Eastern Conference with a record of 5-1-1 before the game began. The beginning of the season had been fantastic. The 1st line Robo Sven - Trevor Lahey - Activity Check were on fire. Check had 16 points in seven games and Lahey-Sven duo 15 points. Lahey had already scored 10 times and Check had 11 assists. Also for Salming the beginning of the campaign was fine. He had 3+3 after seven game days. The production pace was excellent because he was playing in the 3rd line together with Carter Stankoven and EGGWARD ELRIC. The average ice time was little bit over 15 minutes.

The match against Stampede began perfectly. Second-liner Binko Koivu scored after eight minutes. After that, Buffalo countered with two quick goals after the 1st period had passed its halfway mark. But then the inevitable happened. At the 19:57 Finnish elite center Jani Mänty tied the game for 2-2 just before the 1st intermission. Koivu got a primary assist and secondary assist was marked to William Salming who had just came to the ice to replace 2nd line LW Raw Cheese McPickle. So, it was a flying change and Hamilton had a mixed line on the ice when history was made. Salming used his best skill which is playing near the boards. He won the puck battle there thanks to his strong stick and hard core which helps him to keep his balance. From the left wing the puck went to the corner for Koivu. He found Mänty with a cross-ice pass and Jani had an easy task to just tap the puck in from the right back door. Mänty also knew immediately that history was made and grabbed the puck to inside his glove so it could be gifted for Salming after the game. At the same time "there it is" were words which came out of Salming's mouth when the puck crossed the goal line.

Unfortunately the rest of the game didn't go as planned and Buffalo took two points with a 7-2 home win. It scored five unanswered goals and also Salming's plus-minus was -2 after the game. He also had three giveaways, one hit and one blocked shot with 15:47 TOI. But it was still a day which Salming will never forget. After the game he said in a TV interview that he would like to say thank you to his previous team mates in Seattle and current locker room in Hamilton for making possible to achieve such a rare milestone and join the elite 1000 point club. Only 39 players in SHL history have managed to be part of 1000 goals during their careers. For Salming, the 44th overall pick in the season 56 entry draft, it took 1394 games.

Even though Steelhawks lost the match, Salming opened one cold lemonade bottle when he arrived back to his hotel room to celebrate little bit his 1000th regular season point. But because William is a professional athlete who really appreciates every game day in the SHL, he didn't want to ruin next matches by enjoying too much. He kept his professionalism and went to bed after drinking that one lemonade bottle. Discipline is a key thing if you want to play a long career. That's why Salming already scored his 1001st point in a next match which was a back-to-back contest against Stampede. Unfortunately 5-4 goal was the last goal of the game and Buffalo won also the second meeting between powerhouses of the Eastern Conference. After 1396 career games, Salming now sits at 321+680=1001, -198. His next big milestone will be 700 assists and with the current pace he has a chance to achieve it this season too.
