S80 SMJHL PT #1: Season Preview Due: Sunday, December 22nd @ 11:59 PM PST
#16

With the small 7 pre-season span, it looks like our team is still up to development and that the most recent draft will probably pay off with the new additions in our forward core! This season, we will probably still be a team in reconstruction and will most likely be a bottom team in the SMJHL (Unfortunately...). Nevertheless, many players will be crucial in our lineup this season. Some players like David Corrigan, Ivan Godinez, Cutter Gauthier and Jordan Lafrenière will be those kinds of players.

Now, why are they so important to this team?

-David Corrigan: Right now, he is the leader in team points with 11 points in eight games. From those points, he scored 4 times and got 7 assists! His production will make him an offensive dynamo in this year’s Kelowna team, which proves why he’ll be so crucial!

- Ivan Godinez: He is the pilar in Kelowna’s defense this season with his 348 applied TPE (Most for a defenseman in the team). He is a great two-way defenseman that will be a key to success in this season and future seasons.

-Jordan Lafrenière: He hasn't gotten the start he wanted but will surely get over that rough time soon as he is a leader on and off the ice. He is also a great playmaker that always produces something, even when he isn’t on the scoring sheet, and this is what makes him very important for this Kelowna team!

Looking at the roster for Great Falls and there are three clear, clutch and cerebral players that should be a focus for the coming season. First of all we have Jackass pants, top centre and overall workhorse for the team. Pants is expected to take on some of the hardest minutes in the J this season, and will hope to break the Point per game barrier in a significant way for the first time. Second we have Dirty Puma who is expected to make a step forward this season after a breakthrough rookie season. A tenacious defender, he should be a stalwart on the PK for the foreseeable future. Lastly we have returning lead scorer for the Grizzlies, Grindle Waters-Johnson. Grindle is expected to light up the league and once again lead the team in points. Expanding on a 15.3% scoring percentage may be difficult, so hopefully the backup surrounding the team will facilitate more assists going forward.

Grizzlies Grizzlies

Another year in Great Falls! Last year saw not so great results, with a 29-36-1 record, good enough (bad enough??) for a 12th place finish. This year, expectations are cautiously optimistic that the team can improve on that record. It’ll be tough, as the team lost four 425 capped players to the big leagues.

Evlar Gil-Galad, their starting goalie was one. This season, they’ll rely on a tandem of Martin Macklemore (an inactive second year) and rookie Matti Brynjarsson. The performance of Brynjarsson will be key, as he looks to be the teams number one goalie for at least the next two seasons after this one.

Marian Hanak was a big loss for the team at the forward position, and the team will rely on Nanashi Mumei to take another step forward after two solid seasons.

On the defence side, the team lost two key contributors. Argenti Gorilla was an offensive stud, scoring 57 points last year. They also lost shot blocking machine Solaire of Astora. And with those two loses, the team went out and spent their first two picks on defence. Kienen McKeller and Sazed Kholin were brought in, and both are expected to be the teams second pairing this season, with a chance to be their blue line mainstays for their whole SMJHL career

This year the Grizzlies have a pretty decent roster. I'm hoping that we'll finish somewhere in the middle of the pack. Right now, Waters (Grindle Waters Johnson) is by far out biggest star on the ice. We are a team that heavily is reliant on scoring, and my man is able to put pucks in net consistently. With a recent hat trick and 100 OGR on separate nights, it looks like we'll be able to look to him to give us the scoring finish that we need in times of needs. He is by far and above going to be our most impactful (point-wise) player on the roster this season, calling it here.

Secondly, I think his center, Jackass Pants will be a big help. Jackass is a playmaking two-way centerman that has had no problem scoring in recent times. He, paired with Waters will make up much of our scoring efforts. JP will be important for us though especially, as being a center he has defensive responsibilites. With our lower defensive lines having little upside due to inactivity, his role as a forward will definitely be crucial on the backend in our defensive zone.

I'd like to also give a shoutout/honorable mention to Nanashi Mumei, our team's right winger, who would fill out our first line completely. We are a very top heavy team that is reliant on the production of our L1. They are able to get up above and over the hump to really be a competitive team against the other high-producing teams in the SMJHL, like QBC and ANC.

However, my third slot is going to go to our Captain and first pairing defenseman Dirty Puma. He's our highest overall TPE player as well as our most consistent defenseman. He leans into the defensive side of things which is extremely crucial for us, as we are a team that is a little defensively flawed. Dirty Puma's ability to shut down plays on the ice will prove critical in maintaining any leads we get from our first line's scoring. I'm hoping as an offensive defenseman as well, that Dirty Puma will be able to eventually stagger my offensive capabilities so that we can make a strong first pairing together. Go Grizzlies as always Smile.

Well so far we have done fairly well as a team, we are in 6th place so far in the standings which is at least in the upper half and means playoffs will be fun hopefully. We have a good team with some obvious star players. Drew McIntyre is the clear star of the team, so far he has 29 points, 10 goals and 19 assists, the most in the team in all statistics I think. It's been great to see him play and he really needs to keep that success going for us. There are also Slava Kasyanenko and Badger Hennesy, both are centers which is interesting and both so far have the exact same stats in terms of goals, assists and points. Both have 9 goals, 12 assists and 21 points. But Slava is a +12 and Badger is a -6, probably due to the roles they play and the lines and such. It would be nice if we can increase the lower lines's effectivity and bring out hte best. My own player has done pretty well so far, with 5 goals and 8 assists, and a -1 so again probably cause I am on a lower line, but really these are already better stats than I imagined so hopefully I can help the team win in the future still.

Maine looks to return a great veteran core ahead of this season. Having only lost a few players and bringing in new top talent in rookies Apollo Seaborne and Denali Needleberg, Maine looks top see a deep run into the playoffs. There are a few players who must perform at the high level they have shown and coontinue to lead Maine. Among those is LW Valtteri Pulkkinen, who must continue leading the team in goals after doing so just a season ago. Just as important we hope to see the rookie get up to speed quickly. Apollo Seaborne will need to quickly develop into a mintue-eatting defenceman as the season wears on. Also expect Lucas Lindberg and Denali Neddleberg to provide depth scoring as they develop chemistry on the third pairing this season. All three rookies will prove to be the leaders on this team in future seasons, but will need to grow quickly if the team plans to push for a cup this season.

The Battleborn are in a peculiar spot this season. They’re not really considered among the leagues elite in terms of maxed players or total tpe, but they do have some great builds at every position, and a youth wave that will hopefully only get stronger as the season rolls on. They are also in the weaker southern conference, so if the Battleborn can get hot at the right time, they could be dangerous in the playoffs. This teams hopes ride on the performance of their stars, starting with:

Drew McIntyre - LW
McIntyre is the battleborns strongest winger, and their best offensive threat. Expect to see them log heavy minutes this season. If they are at the peak of their game, they could go far. Coming off a 28 goal/64 point sophomore season, McIntyre has already proven themself as an effective weapon, and has a chance to take it to all star levels this year.

Badger Hennessy - C
Another offensive heavy forward, Badger had a bit of a down year after moving from RW to Center. Yet some of that is probably attributed to the team wide struggles, the Battleborn need Hennessy to have his best year yet if they hope to contend.

Jack - G
Despite a 4.9 GAA in their rookie season, Jack was able to put together a number of wins in a small stretch of games. And being able to hold out for those wins is more important than any stat. Yet in the first 10 games this year Jack has been off to a lightning start. Boasting a much better save % and GAA, they has also racked up 7 wins in 9 games. If they can keep up this level of play, the Battleborn will cruise through the playoffs.

I'd now like to talk about the future success of our team, the Anchorage Armada. This team redoubles its efforts to provide thrills when played against, especially with the Duo Zamboni - Ully. It's often said that they have a pre-game tradition reminiscent of peanut butter, in reference to Zamboni's first name. This duo is often described as a real wall of ice against other teams. Some even tend to want them on their side because their duo is so incredible. On the other hand, Elaine and Hugues are sensational on the ice. They bring a breath of fresh air and send spikes of ice that pierce opposing goals. I can't forget Storm, who applies passes like a real storm. Anyone trying to take the puck away from him just can't do it, because the speed of his passes is just too strong. That's why these players are so important to the team. Without them, I don't think we'd be as crucial as our success is showing right now. I'm glad it's on our side and not the other way around.

It's going to be a tough season for the Detroit Falcons. Amidst a rebuild, they will certainly be competing for a prime draft lottery position. The team lacks the overall firepower compared to other teams. Their two recent draftees, Vasher Summers and Mathieu Mathématique will be the ones to watch this season. Both defenseman, they will be getting plenty of ice time, which will be good for their development. Being a rookie in the SMJHL is tough, and they don't really have that strong supporting cast that other teams' rookies do. The future is bright for Detroit, and they will be clinging onto that hope all season. Summers and Mathématique will be the team's future top 2 defenseman. For more current matters, keep an eye on Jeffrey Bjelland. He is going into the season as Detroit's #1 centerman, and is expected to be one of their top scorers. Elliot Alderson is the one who will be mentoring Summers and Mathématique, and maybe that will inspire him to put in some strong perfomances.

I will single out 3 players from the ranks of the Knights, which I will discuss here, and why I think they are the key to the team's success.

1. Jon-Isaac FortyOne and Gino Fortezza: Difficult to pick which of them is more important, so I give them the same place. The Knights breathe through their goalkeepers, who are the backbone of the team. When they catch the pucks, the team can breathe and play more freely. The backbone that the entire Knights team relies on.

2. Jordan Lafreniére: A newcomer who, however, carries the vice-captain A on his chest. Even though he is a newcomer, he has already proven to be very helpful, which is easy for his teammates to trust. The center forward and the quarterback will certainly be important.

3. Erik Johnson. Already took a role in LR. A helpful rookie defender who also proved to be a player. An important piece in the team's defense.

In my opinion, the Knights are a well-built team with a touch of experience and another touch of youth, which, if very confused, can go a long way. Fighting for the league win? Perhaps. Is it the worst in the league? Absolutely not.
Can you surprise? Sure.

Looking at the upcoming season, to describe the Yukon Malamutes best, one word comes to mind: Imbalanced. Whether that be the imbalance of forwards to defensemen, or the balance of those specializing on the left flank to those who call home the right side of the ice, Yukon must find a balance so that they can find success this season of the SMJHL. The first name who comes to mind on how to help with this balance is RD Isamu Knievel. Knievel is the only currently listed right side defender on the Malamutes, and while coaches will inevitably swap a player over, as the only player expressly comfortable with that side in particular, Isamu must provide a spark for a defensive group containing Earl Biggins and the newly acquired Océane Söderberg-Tremblay. Söderberg-Tremblay is another player who stands out as an impact skater for Yukon. Taken with the first overall pick, Söderberg-Tremblay looks to slot into the second line on defense and hopes to help solidify a defense to protect their tandem of goalies. The final impact player for Yukon is undoubtedly Djoe Anderson. With the top lines already having their left wingers in Chuck Lumbermouth and Christina Fantobens, Djoe will likely be asked to swap sides and give the right wing some support. Showing that they can stay effective from the other side of the ice will give the Malamutes a strong case for a top offense in the league.

It has been a bit of a rough start to the season for the Timber, but we're looking forward to the remainder of the season and improving as it goes along. We'll be looking for a couple of players to really bare the weight of carrying the team a bit, starting with Pulkkinen. Simply put, he had an amazing season last year and we'll be leaning on his ability to explode offensively to really drive play in the opponent's end. Helping with that will be Darby Reznor, playing the opposite side of Pulkkinen and nearing the 425tpe max this season. On the blue line, which is littered with junior players, Ty Justice will be playing a pivotal role in helping the tandem of Kris and Popovics from letting in too many goals. We have a healthy mixture of veterans and young players so we're all pretty excited, but the aforementioned players will be heavily leaned on to help replicate the performance we had last season.

LARGEST PUNISHMENT IN SHL HISTORY
#28

The San Diego Tidal had an amazing preseason going 7-0-0 and while hockey is a team game there were a few players whos stats really stood out

Felix Carlsson- Going into their fourth full season in the SMJHL, Carlsson is coming off a career high in goals (33), assists (45) and points (78). This preseason Carlsson was just as dominant averaging over 2 points a game in the 7 games (8 goals, 7 assists). If Carlsson can keep this up into the season, the other teams will need to watch out, i could see a player of the year from them down the road

Josie Cass- last year was Cass's first full season but the number didnt show it. Cass finished not far from Carlsson, finishing with 29 goals and 43 assists for 73 points. That was just the first full season! with now having more experience and an offseason to train, Cass might be able to crack 100 points this year. Cass had 8 goals and 7 assists in the preseason as well so 100 points might not be a far fetched prediction

Baldur-Ulysse Soderberg-Tremblay- Soderberg-Tremblay is entering their first season in the SMJHL. They may be a rookie but the preseason numbers are fantastic. in 3 games the goaltender posted a 3-0-0 record with a 2.67 GAA and .922 save percentage. The sample size might be small but if this keeps up they could be a big factor in how the Tidal do this season.

With a mediocre 3-4 start, the Detroit Falcon look like a team in need of development. Which they have taken the right direction in to that step.

The first notable player is John Gibson (no bias). Who has proven himself an active goaltender, while may not be the highest ranked on their team, he is an exceptional upgrade in activity and could progress very quickly

The second notable player is Elliot Alderson, the clear cut leader of the team. While being SHL drafted, he continues to play and lead his team. Helping our rookies and veterans progress as a real team.

The final notable player is Mitch Morris, an active shiny new rookie. Like Gibson, he is a consistent active player, while not being a highly skilled player. He also has the great activity potential, and could turn into a large piece in to Detroit’s offense

The whalers 3 keys to success are simple. Trent Makinze must be godly because we have bad team defense up and down the roster both at forward and defense. Good goaltending is required to bail us out of all the many mistakes we as a team are making. That is already showing with the results of the season and how she has the highest goals saved above average. The second player who needs to be great is Baron. He is a playmaker who needs to rack up Assists for this team to win. We are a team of a ton of snipers and need setup men and baron is an important one. This one is not a specific player but a group of players and that is the rookies we have a ton of rookies who are the future and about half the team if they do not show up we have nothing so it’s just a matter of if they show up.
