RANKING EVERY ROOKIE SO FAR (the first two round in this post)
#1

Here in Jagg's Mega Collosus Media, Im going to be rating EVERY SINGLE ROOKIES PERFORMANCE, in the SMJHL

FOR NOW i will only be ranking players taken in the first two rounds of the draft, these elite few were selected with high hopes, therefore, in my opinion, they should already be showing up and showing out

This might very quickly turn into a ginormous Deep Dive, so without further introduction, starting in draft order:

Océane Söderberg-Tremblay, Defense:
Oceane has been a very solid piece added to Yukons defense. OST has been averaging 22 minutes a night, which is typically first pairing minutes in the Js. 18pts in 35 games isnt outstanding but is decent for a defenseman. A solid solid pick but just hasnt shown up in the way youd hope for a 1st overall
Player Grade: B+
Pick Grade: C-

River Yekaterina Volkova, Forward:
River has frankly underperformed for being such a high pick, i think alot of this is attributed to seanys leadership, i mean the Whalers struggling in general. Just to be fair to River, im going to compare against other on the Whalers, currently tied for 2nd in goals at 10, aswell as 3rd in points at 24 , clearly river is a key piece, but is being a key piece on a meh team really something to be proud of?
Player Grade: B-
Pick Grade: D

Dee Centerman IV, Jr., Forward:
IVJR has started a little slow, however, to his credit, he is only getting 17:30 ATOI, which is on the lower end for this team, that has played well through 37 games. IVJR has contributed 21 pts across the entirity of the tidals season thus far. His build is clearly directed more defensively, with some decent playmaker ability in the puckhandling and passing categories, IVJR is built currently to help his linemates be more aggressive and find some points here and there, he also converts on a small % of his shots at only 6.7%
but ill be generous here, and consider him as more of a defensive anchor than a point getter, especially at this point in his career
Player Grade: B
Pick Grade: C+

Claude L'Castor Goalie:
Claude is the first name i personally recognize on this list, Beavie is wonderful to talk to, extremely active, has made some very enjoyable media to read, and i as a rule despise reading, im trying to be a welder for Christ sake, and yet its always a joy to see the gifs of claude wrestling, and the passion beavie has found for this league. Claude was not only the first goalie drafted this time around, but on top of that, this is a first time create. Clearly the Battleborn GM was very impressed by Beavie for Claude to go so high, and so far, id personally say this pick was a hit, Goalies in general are kind of a mystery in FHM, but atleast with someone so active you know youre getting the best odds. Claude has arguably been the better half of the tandem in Nevada aswell, with a 3.59 GAA, a recorded shutout, and a s% just below 900 at .894, which considering how high scoring alot of these Js games are, is an impressive stat in of itself, especially on a team riding the 500 line
Player Grade: A
Pick Grade: A

Kienen McKeller, Defense:
As the 2nd defender taken in the class, McKeller has struggled with the Grizzlies, 11 points in 36 games is below what I personally wouldve hoped for out of the 5th overall, aswell as getting absolutely thrashed while on the ice, at -29, which yes +/- is a team stat, but he sits towards the bottom of his teams +/-, with only fellow rookie, Sazed Kholin below McKeller, at -31. Now to be fair to the kid, hes clearly playing what most teams would consider top pairing minutes, with nearly 23:00 ATOI, despite being on the second pairing
He happens to lead this team in takeaways as well, but the kids afraid to get infront of the puck to help his goalie out at only 9 blocked shots, averaging just 1 every 4 games. i think this one will find his footing in the coming seasons, but there was better value at this pick in the forward position
Player Grade: C+
Pick Grade: D

Tom O'Donnell, Forward:
Tom seems like a decent player, but hes getting 3rd line minutes, and refuses to shoot first, which might be to his detriment being on a low line for the Walleye, hes also 6th on his team with giveaways despite his lower minutes. His stat page shows a player struggling with the speed of Major Junior Hockey. He has only had 15 points so far. However there are some bright spots to his play, O'Donnell is clearly not afraid to be physical, averaging just under 2 hits a game, and hes a very clean player, only having racked up 2 minutes this season. Tom is extremely disciplined, and has something to prove, maybe hed succeed for the Walleyes on the penalty kill, hes clearly not afraid to get into a scrum and fight up and down the ice, the skill and finesse will come later on with this one, i hope to see him get more involved on the pk to see what the kids got. to me this kid looks like hes not being utilized to his fullest extent more than his abilities as a player
Player Grade: B-
Pick Grade: C
Coaching Grade: F, do better >:(

Vasher Summers, Defense:
Im not gonna sugar coat it, The Falcons have been terrible this season, this is likely one of the worst situations a rookie couldve ended up in for this season, very little help to help these rooks succeed. Vasher has one purpose, get you off the puck, walk the puck out of the zone, then sit at his own blue line until the horn sounds and hes allowed to go home, take his flinstones vitamin gummy, watch "how to be an elite hockey defender" videos on youtube, while drinking tap water from a glass he found at the local goodwill that became his favorite for how strong and consistent it is. This man could not give less of a shit about getting points, Passing? thats a forwards job. Shooting? now youre pushing his buttons, dont be surprised if he gives you the most russian death glare a californian can give you, before making you look like a toddler skating for the second time in their young life, refusing to elaborate, and having zero interest in whether his team scores or not
Player Grade: B+
Pick Grade: B+

Optimus Autonomous, Forward:
Mr tesla robot has been having an extremely average rookie season, hes definitely had an impact in ottawa, banking 20 pts, 17 of which being assists, in 36 games. i personally would hope for a little more out of a top 10 pick, but that would ignore the entire story. seeing as hes literally a robot, he must play some decent defense too right? and to that i answer, surprisingly, yes! having 24 blocked shots, despite averaging 9 seconds a game on the penalty kill. Where optimus lacks in goal getting potential, he makes up for in being an extremely underrated two way player. this is definitely a robot id let date my daughter
Player Grade: B
Pick Grade: B+

Khalfani, Forward:
I personally might be biased, as i currently am a part of Kelowna. However, i believe OBJECTIVELY, Khalfani is the best forward drafted in the top 10 for S81, racking up 13 goals and 17 assists in just 35 games, being the only forward drafted this high to be close to a point per game. Khalfani also isnt afraid to be physical, averaging exactly a hit per game. He is also the only forward in the top 10 to be on a PK unit, averaging 2 minutes of killing a game. This man also has a 17.6% shot percentage on 74 shots, and he isnt the one that even wants to be looking to shoot, he just happens to have the open ice and shot so often to try it, and its be working out far more often than any other rookie on the list so far. If i had picks 1-8 as a gm here, id be pissed that khalfani slipped through the cracks and fell all the way to 9
Player grade: A-
Pick Grade: A

Baldur-Ulysse Söderberg-Tremblay, Goalie:
The 2nd of the Soderberg-tremblays to be drafted, also just so happens to be a goalie, boy would i feel bad for their parents if they werent already filthy rich from playing professional hockey themselves. BUST (lol fkn nerd) has surpisingly shown up alot more and prevalently than his sibling taken earlier at the top pick of the draft, already having played 29 games, 2.5x as many as the other tendy in san diego, but is still not the best goalie taken in the top 10. Comparing to Claude directly, their s% is essentially identical, being only .004 apart from eachother, and considering the tidal have a more stout defense, thats a little bit of a let down from the BUST, allowing 3.78 GAA, and never having recorded a shutout
It seems as if this bloodline produces mediocre hockey players at best, kinda like the Sutters in the NHL
Player Grade: B
Pick Grade: B

Lucas Lindberg, Forward:
Another bang average forward from this class, 23 pts, 3rd line minutes, however lindberg has been very physical, 68 hits, and an above average s% at 12%, yet another forward from this class possibly being overlooked to be called upon for defensive special teams, overall solid, but there was still better at this pick
Player Grade: B
Pick Grade: C+

Malte Högberg, Forward:
FINALLY, another forward thats been a standout, a cut above so to speak, and thats in spite of getting less than 17 minutes ATOI. Hogberg absolutely benefits from being on a team with some of the best point getters in the entirity of the Js, and compared to the team on average he is in the lower 50%, but hes kust 5 points away from being 5th on his team in scoring. the beserkers have been so dominant because they have a great top line, but they have talent in their bottom 6 that could all individually make arguements for being top liners for atleast a dozen other teams. Hogberg is no different, 14.6% s%, and even gets in on the penalty kill, likely for the physicality he can bring to the 2nd pk unit. fantastic pick from Newfoundland here in the draft, there was better, but this was a top 3 available at this pick
Player Grade: A-
Pick Grade: A

Reg Kirkby, Forward:
Kirkby is essentially identical to hogberg, but if you compressed the image from HD to 720p, its a little noticeably worse, but essentially the same thing, 3rd line minutes, 28 points, mostly assists, some pk time, brings a physical element, these two were 100% drafted in the correct order in regards to eachother
Player Grade: B+
Pick Grade: A-

Hetaksh, Forward:
Here we are ladies and gentlemen, one of the future ROTY ballot players, Hetaksh
40 points in just 35 games, split down the middle between goals and assists like a 1st year surgeon, at 19 goals and 21 assists. there is a gap in his game from the stats page, which is defense. however, do you really want your young stud superstar getting into the corners, losing stamina, and needing more time on the bench, or do you want him to be ready to get straight on the ice right after the kill to create high quality chances, id hope everyone would choose the latter. Heta has more points at even strength than everyone in the top 10 other than Khalfani. This kid is a stud, and the first true gem of a skater found in this draft
Player Grade: A+
Pick Grade: A+

Sevrin Quinn, Forward
Its a Miracle! 2 players drafted in a row, that are both point per game forwards. However, Quinn is not like Heta in my eyes, Quinn had alot of assists, he doesnt really shoot, which is fine, but that means you have to put him with someone that can put pucks in nets and butts in seats. however it is worth noting that all but 2 of quinns points are even strength points, while getting just over 17 ATOI. also unfortunaely, im gonna have to knock em down a step of a grade for losing the only fight theyve fought. interestingly, quinn might be an elite faceoffs circle guy, at 58.5% in over 300 faceoffs so far this season.
Player Grade: B+
Pick Grade: A-

Matthew Leroux, Forward:
I had a feeling a 3peat was too good to be true, Leroux has been a below average forward on and squirming team, only putting up 15 points, but oh silly me FOR ONCE THERES A DEFENSIVE FORWARD BEING USED IN A DEFENSIVE WAY, MY PRAYERS HAVE BEEN ANSWERED. Leroux has 42 shot block and an average just under 3 minutes of PK time a night, he leads whalers forwards in take aways, he has the 3rd best +/- out of all whalers players, his only problem is he has 1 PIM for every game hes played. if this kid figures out to keep good stick discipline and maybe get a few more points, he could be a force by his 3rd and 4th seasons in the Js.
Player Grade: B+
Pick Grade: B+
Coach Grade: A, Good job Seany :D

ROUND 2

Jordan Lafrenière, Forward:
Rookyi is also im personally familiar with, in the KEL discord hes active multiple times a day, hes very passionate about the performance of his player. because of that, i know Lafreniere started out very cold, and through the last weeks of sim has gotten hot, getting all the way up to 27 pts, 20 of which being assists. Hes done better than half the forwards drafted in the previous round, very solid pick up for kelowna. and unlike the other forwards that have defensive upside, Lafreniere gets to see the ice in the PK aswell, extremely solid 2 way forward, definitely a hit of a pick to start the 2nd round. the pick grade isnt going to be influenced by the next pick, as it also belongs to kelowna, and these two couldve been drafted in either order and wouldnt matter.
Player Grade: B+
Pick Grade: A-

David Corrigan, Forward:
DC, The Scott, Drunk Tank Resident, no matter what you call this kid, He is currently my front runner for ROTY, racking up 46 points in just 35 games. However, it is worth noting, since my previous Deep Dive, hes slowed down in the points department, he used to have a double digit lead in points to Heta, now the difference is a measly 6. When i wrote the previous deep dive, i thought the range of points he could end up at was ginormous, however i did figure hed likely slow down, the range i said out loud was anywhere from 70-120, knowing that there was a very high chance DC ends up under 100 points. No SMJHL rookie has ever hit 100 points, it would be quit the feat from DC to hit that. however hes only 54 points out with 31 games to go. its not unprecedented to hit that much of a stride, but that would be a pace somewhere around 1.7 PPG for 31 games straight. I personally dont see that happening, however would love to be proved wrong. This guy was 1 of 2 of the best rookie in this class as far as immediate impact, and he went in the 2nd round. which means seany passed on him twice.
Player Grade: A+
Pick Grade: A+

Brett McMann, Forward:
McMann is another sardine in a class that is full of sardines (i like sardines, but they are abundant). McMann has been a good contributor, nothing special, doesnt really like to play defense, but clearly has some good defensive upside nonetheless, 3rd line minutes for a reason IMO on this one, decent s% at 9%, all but 2 of his points were in even strength, this kid has to grind for every point hes got. He also has a good amount of takeaways, at 28. McMann is exactly what id expect to see from a 2nd rounder.
Player Grade: B
Pick Grade: A-

Captain Obvious, Forward:
Captain O and his teammate McMann are even on points, but cleary O has some better defensive upside, as he sees the ice for the kill. O has also had more goals, at 12, leading to a higher s% at 13%. Captain has played pretty clean so far aswell, only seeing 6 PIMs from infraction, and 5 from getting his face turned concave. Cap is a true DFF, putting his body on the line to block shots, already feeling 27 so far this season, decently physical, again a guy that is only going to improve, and is willing to be solid both ways to help the team when it gets grimy. Yet another solid pick up for the Tidal.
Player Grade: B
Pick Grade: A-

Sazed Kholin, Defense:
FINALLY another defender to talk about from this class. Frankly hes been disappointing thus far, only 5 points in 36 games, despite being built like a DFD with some offensive upside, and furthering my dismay, Mr plays no offense, Vasher Summers, has more points on a worse team than this poor sap. This is all in spite of top pairing minutes. lackluster in the takeaway department aswell, not all that physical for a TWD, averaging a hit a game, i guess a bright spot is that he can take faceoffs for some reason, and win a 3rd of them, which is not usually anywhere near the realm of defensemen. On the brightside he is playing a large amount of the PK every night, averaging 1:30 a game in the shorthanded. Kholin has been ok so far, i think hell be solid, but not one i see getting drafted to the show as a major junior rookie.
Player Grade: C
Pick Grade: B

Charlie Parks, Forward
Parks has been a little above average when it come to rookie forwards, being part of 24 goals, 16 of which he netted himself. Rookie shooters arent all that common, and to be frank, this one might be bottlenecked by the line he plays for in colorado, getting 3rd line minutes. and while he might be a future top echelon goal getter, he has some decent defensive upside with 17 blocks and 50 hits. Parks also has a good little clutch gene, netting 3 GWGs for colorado in his first half a season with the team, aswell as a ludicrous 19.3 s%. i feel like it rough for true goal geters to really take off in their first year in any league, but parks has been putting up a good showing for a rookie on a stacked team, if i were COLs gm, i might consider moving him up in minutes, might find yourself higher in the standing come playoff time
Player Grade: A-
Pick Grade: A-

Jack Ryan, Goalie:
Jacks been placed in a very meh team, been struggling tremendously as a result of his scenario. it seems like he has to come in quite often for the starter, Grant Berd, aswell as gets pulled frequently himself. but ryan in a similar sample of games, has been the more consistent goalie,, allowing a lower GAA, higher SV%, and being the only goalie to pitch a shutout for the walleye this season. I personally think the walleye shouldve tried to pick up a point getter here, as a goalie isnt really going to help them win games when they struggle to score frequently, but a good goalie nonetheless
Player Grade: B+
Pick Grade: D+

Honza Havran, Goalie:
Honza, is 1 of 3 very promising goalies, with previously mentioned L'Castor and Undrafted Rookie John Gibson, Honza has done extremely well on one of the top teams in the league, recording an absurd .921, 3 shutouts, 2.27 GAA, and has out performed his rookie counterpart in net with him, Matt Retinol. Not only did the Kraken find an absolute gem with Honza, but i believe this is the best pick they couldve made at this point in the draft, they already picked up their stud forward in the first round, excellent drafting from Carolina.
Player Grade: A+
Pick Grade: A+

Franjo Frankopan Jelacic, Forward:
It seems like FFJ is confused on what direction he wants to go forward as a hockey player, 16 points with 10 of those being goals is extremely solid, but nothing that impressive. that is until you consider he has a 21.3 s%, which means he should probably shoot more, but hes not. hes also on the kill for the whalers, but lacks shot blocks, at only 12, so again doesnt seem like a complete liability, but hasnt really performed either. Jelacic has just underperformed everywhere a Center can other than goals, where id say he is average, and faceoff%, which is definitely an upside, but again nothing outstanding. i at the same time feel nothing but alot of confusion.
Player Grade: C
Pick Grade: C

Bubbles Puff, Defense:
Puff has been a wonderful DFD with offensive upside, contributing on 14 goals in 35 games, all the while getting bottom 4 minutes. for some god forsaken reason this traumatized soul has had to take nearly 40 faceoffs, only god know why, and even then AS A DEFENDER has won 43.6% of them. if you are a forward, and are losing to a defender in the circle, you need to retire, idc if youre a winger that scored 200 goals and 1000 assists in 35 games, youre a liability, you need to go see coaching and come back to not lose to a defender in the circle, WTAH is that. other than faceoff shenanigans, pretty band average DFD, solid [pick for a team thats already picked a ROTY contender forward, and a potential award winning goalie, filling the gaps is important at this point, i think the toughness of bubbles will show in the distant or possibly near future.
Player Grade: B+
Pick Grade: A

Ty Sinclair, Defense:
This defender has been relatively quiet all things considered, 15pts in 34 games is decent enough, 2nd pairing minutes, ok defensive showing, pretty standard DFD with offensive upside. I really have so little to say about him, hes not really bad at anything imparticular, not really a standout either, just a solid 2nd pairing defender for a solid colorado team
Player Grade: B
Pick Grade: C+

Soobin, Forward:
This man is a great pick up late into the 2nd round, very strong offensive player, splitting his 30 points right down the center, 15 goals and 15 assists.a little bit of a defensive liability, however it doesnt appear that he cant hold his own if it came down to it, at the end of the day a guy like this might end up on the offensive special teams, likely a top line winger in the coming seasons, so he doesnt need to be an insanely promising backchecker aswell, a build like this is one alot of teams would take with open arms insanely quickly if given the chance to have a damn near a point per game forward despite his defensive short comings. be careful tho, over half of his points are on the powerplay, if he can find open ice and make things happen more often in 5-5, we might have a future first rounder headed to the show, but if hes only ever able to get it moving mostly off the powerplay, i might wanna let him slide in the draft, after all you cant always depend on penalties to get you what you need, especially come playoff time
Player Grade: A-
Pick Grade: B+

Apollo Seaborne, Defense:
Seaborne seems like hes trying to build to be a TWD, however right now, hes playing like one of the best rookie OFDs with ok defensive upside, 20 points in just 36 games is great for a rookie defender, but hes not really blocking too many shots as a defender, and has been barely below average when it comes to hits and physicality, although it seems like that will very much improve with time, the defense can come later, with experience and time in his new setting of Major Junior, but showing he sees the ice well with contributing on points with great frequency isnt always something that can be taught. Seaborne is another defender who has turned their back on godhimself, and has show up ALOT in the face off circle, however his % is more what id expect from a defender taking faceoffs, right around 1/3 of the time winning the puck back to presumably a forward lining up where he should be, because nothing makes sense, my life is a lie, everything i know is fiction, and my beliefs a mere fairytale. i could see this astronaut ending up high on an SHL roster right out of the Js, especially if he figures out how to play defense with significantly more consistency, this could be a first year top pair defender come season 84 of SHL
Player Grade: A
Pick Grade: A

Phoenix-Orion Söderberg-Tremblay, Forward:
Posty is yet another mediocre player from this mediocre hockey family that has produced nothing but melodic mediocrity, my moral mind merged melancholically on this conclusion: that these three got taken so high purely based on name recognition, much like Eli Manning riding on the coattails of his elder brother, Peyton. this is the most bang average forward ive ever seen, the most baseline, not good at anything, not bad at anything, jack of all trades. however the saying goes "A jack of all trades, a master of none, however OFTEN better than a master of one" this is the exception, i guess atleast he isnt an absolute bust but good lord i feel this couldve amounted to something better, instead of this heathen of a "future superstar"
Player Grade: B-
Pick Grade: D out of spite

Cutter Gauthier, Forward:
WOW LOOK AT THAT, A FORWARD, WITH NAME RECOGNITION RELATED TO HOCKEY, LIVING UP TO HIS NAME RATHER THAN BEING ABSOLUTELY PAINFULLY AND ABHORENTLY AVERAGE. Gauthier has 31 points in just 35 games, 16 goals, 15 assists. He;s not really there to defend, but he will get into the dirty areas, and lay people out atleast 2 times a game already whacking skaters 74 seperate times. not really the best in the dot at right about 35%, which im sure my grandmother could do better if she learned how to stand on skates, but thats truly the only gap in his game right now, very strong offensive forward, destined for great things, will only get better with time as all these rooks. and on top of everything, EVERY SINGLE POINT has come at even strength, he will be a huge asset for kelowna over the next 3 and a half seasons, and a huge asset to whoever drafts him to the show come s84
Player Grade: A-
Pick Grade: A

Lancer Frappé, Defense:
imma go easy on the kid, and imma be nice to seany on this one, i think seany made a good pick here, to have a defender put up 11 points with the whalers half way through the season is a pretty good feat, this ones hard to rank because i feel like the whalers have a whole puzzle, they have all the pieces they could ever want, and somethings just not clicking, something needs to change, whether its lines or tactics or something, this whalers team is alot better than the stats show, they just gotta find their groove. Coffee Bean himself here, Mr Morning Milkshake, has struggled hard, -18 on the +/-, 21 takeaways with only 5 giveaways. theres the makings of a good DFD, i just dont think this is the type of situation to succeed as a rookie. even his DGR shows that most of the time hes doing what the team needs him to do, this team is just such a mess at this moment that i cant reallyput too much faith into the stat tracker here, i think if he was on a team like Carolina or Anchorage, hed be succeeding with flying colors
Player Grade: A
Pick Grade: B+

And that will wrap up the first 2 round of SMJHLs most previous draft, im curious to hear if anyone has any differing opinions, i expect my DMs and PMs to be flooded by lovers of the Soderberg Treblays, frankly, fight me, u arent gonna win, because none of yall have even posted a fight so clearly, youre scared. Im hoping that my schedule will allow me to atleast get through another 2 rounds of the draft by the end of this upcoming week but we will have to see

THANK YOU for reading or skimming, i greatly appreciate it. Thank you to everyone who runs this server, its been a blast so far!

for grader: just over 4900 words, not extensive stats or anything but every player does have stats i took into consideration, and for most i had checked their card to make judgements on builds and what direction i personally believe they are trying to head in for their build

Great article! I'm with you on Optimus. He's on a line with two stud forwards that do all the scoring though. Only up for the robot offensively from here!

Really fun read to see some general thoughts on the others in the rookie class. I agree with you on Honda being a ROTY contender in regards to goaltending, though being on a team with playoff ambitions does help. Your vendetta with the triplets also is funny and I expect a six person tag team match during the All-Star game intermission.

I'm a bit surprised at getting double A ratings. We always are our own toughest critic and I guess when Claude is on a team who is in the "Growth" stage of their rebuild (Improve your players, then find whatever holes to plug, placing is near secondary). Generally the team's playstyle seems to be more offensively minded as well with D being our biggest area of improvement needed (Two defensively minded defense in Kiwi and Hip, rest are more offensively focused) so it isn't the easiest team to goaltend. That and we lost a high rated forward who was okay at D for obvious reasons which I think is better for EVERYONE in the long term. I'm hopeful Jack in our tandem can bounce back. Dude had an excellent pre-season and start to the season, but I'm just improving Claude as best as I can right now.

Absolute great media. It was very fun to read, gives me new perspectives on my fellow rookies and competition.

I am exited for you to talk about the undrafted rookies (including myself) and learn not only about myself from a new point of view, but even more about the others as well.
