S80 PT #5: How Did It Come To This Due: Sunday, January 19th @ 11:59 PM PST
#1

Please pick ONE prompt to write about. Do not mix and match prompts. Identify the prompt you are using in your submission - Copying and pasting the prompt will deduct from your word count so if you do this make sure YOUR submission is 150+ words excluding the prompt.

Written Option 1: It is the home game day during the first round of playoffs and the whole team eats lunch together, yet your player runs late and misses the appetizer. Which happens to turn into your favor as the rest of the team gets symptoms of food poisoning half way through the third period. While the rest of the team is locked into the locker room; the refs give you, the only one still standing, an hour to find enough replacement players to finish the game. How does your player handle the situation? Is it time to call the closest beer league team and hope they can make it in time? Maybe run quick trial to find most capable fans? Or do you give spotlight to the staff, surely the Zamboni driver and equipment manager can do it? What kind of team your player manages to get together and can they hold onto the 6-3 lead for 10 minutes?

Graphic Option 1: Create an image that shows your player playing with people who clearly don’t know how to play hockey.

Written Option 2: Write an analysis about a team that has seen significant change to their performance from last season to this (for example Manhattan, Atlanta, Toronto or Los Angeles). What changed? Was it expected? How do these seasons compare to their performance even earlier? What do you expect from the next season for the team?

Graphic Option 2: Create an image that compares any team's performance from S79 to S80, must include at least 1 stats that is not related to their record for the said seasons (so something other than wins-losses-points)

You will receive 3 TPE for fulfilling all requirements.

All responses are due on Sunday, January 19th at 11:59 PST. NOTE: IF YOU SUBMIT/EDIT AFTER THE DEADLINE YOU WILL RECEIVE REDUCED/NO TPE.

Graphics need to be viewable when PT is graded or you will not receive TPE. Discord only hosts images for very limited time.

Affiliate claims from either PBE or ISFL or WSLB or SSL are accepted; link directly to your post and note if your username is different there.

If you have any questions/concerns, please PM me. Tasks with malicious intent will not be graded. The graders reserve the right to determine malicious intent, after discussion with me. You will not be warned.

This task is for SHL players and send downs only. If your player is S81 or S82 this is not for you.

Option 2

The Seattle Argonauts saw a significant jump in their performance from S79 to S80, leaping from 13th in the league with 59 points to 5th in the league with 85 points. This was unexpected to me because one of my casino bets for S80 was SEA under since I didn't think they had made significant improvements and the pacific remained a tough division. The most obvious contributor to their rise in the standings this season was the improvement of goaltending and overall team luck. In both seasons the team faced a similar 38.33 and 38.29 shots against per game, but their goals against fell from 290 to 253. They got a big upgrade in the backup goaltender position with Shotty McStopper (448 TPE, 0.891 sv%) being replaced by  Bishop Van Apeldoorn (762 TPE, 0.907 sv%) and their starter Henri Losanov improved from a 0.888 sv% to 0.900. In terms of overall luck, S79 saw 11/15 Argonaut skaters at or below 100 PDO. This greatly improved in S80 where not a single player had a PDO of 100 or below. For next season I expect the Argonauts to fall slightly back down the standings again since the goaltending and luck probably can't reach similar levels to this season, but they're a growing team who should expect to see gradual improvement from where they were in S79.

Written Option 2

The Seattle Argonauts surprised everyone, possibly including themselves, by improving from 4th place to 2nd place in the Pacific Division. The biggest change for them was improving their goal differential from a -66 to a +31. They massively improved their goal scoring, from 3rd worst in the league to 5th best. This was not entirely unexpected as they are a young team who had been improving steadily over the last few seasons, coming in a lot stronger than previous seasons as their rebuild continued. The addition of Prince Marius was a big move as well, adding a high TPE player gave them a legitimate top 6 for the first time in a while. The team has a lot of depth and got contributions from up and down the lineup. So while seeing an improvement was expected, you can see the difference that just a few extra wins can make. I had predicted them to win 34 games or so on the season, so to hit 39 is only 5 games, but if they are the right wins against teams in your division, it can really make that big a difference in the standings. Given that the team is still young and have almost nobody in regression, I would predict that they will continue to get better and keep challenging for top spot in the division for seasons to come.

Written Option 2: Seattle is a popular subject for this, but I'm going to look at a different team entirely. Buffalo finished 11th in the league last year, right in the middle, a bang average team. This season, they've risen all the way to fourth in the league. How have they done it? The first thing to call out is Jarrod Lakemore's season, with 102 points, over 84 last season. This is really mostly a return to form for Lakemore, but Buffalo needed it. He led the team last season with only 84 points, after all. In fact, Daniel Grutham had 90 points himself, meaning two players this season had more points individually than Buffalo's top scorer last season. Buffalo's four players at or above a PPG pace show that their offense has seen significant fine tuning from last season, and with their defense performing arguably similarly, this is the most likely reason for their sudden swell up the standings.

Task 2:

Seattle Argonauts are very familiar organisation to the mr. William Salming so he would like to say couple of words about that team's rise to one of the top teams in the league. Keep grinding and good things happen is one of Salming's mottoes and Seattle has done that. They rebuilded the team during the past eight seasons and are now ready to compete. They have solid depth in all positions currently. 85 standing points and second place in its division was a massive achievement even though most important games are still ahead. Henri Losanov took forward major steps in the net by winning 25 games. In the defence Karl Akar Kekkonen took a role of number one defenceman with 54 points. Every successful team needs a proper number one D. In the attack, Sykyt and Fenix are great 1-2 duo in the middle lane thanks to their two-way capabilities. Both of them also had over 50 assists which was impressive. If your center position is fine, then you can get good results even though you would have little bit weaker situatition in the wings.

Task #1:

Darby was in a serious pickle, as he alone had to find replacement players in an hour after his teammates got food sickness. Remembering something he saw before, he called up the retired Sir Devoir for any kind of help who suggested grabbing some Pokemon from the forest and suggesting that they could help finish the game. Darby just barely manages to get the Pokemon on the ice after promising them a ton of poke snacks, and they were allowed to continue the game. However, it turns out that none of the Pokemon knew how to play hockey like Devoir did, and it was a comedy of errors as Darby tried his best to keep up with his opponents as the Pokemon gave up the puck again and again.

However, as it turns out, this did not matter. Darby did have a plan with all this to keep the game as a victory for his team, because there is no skater that can get a puck past a sleeping Snorlax laying in front of the goal.

In my experience, one doesnt have to venture far beyond the innards of the stadium to find fully capable individuals who love hockey and play it to take to the ice. Few people are going to be involved with hockey if they dont have a passion for it, and chances are pretty good that the ice crew that helps out on the ice, the zamboni driver or equipment manager as mentioned above can do the deed. I would first start internally w/ individuals who work for the organization in some capacity and have the coaches decide who makes up what line. With the remaining spots left on the last lines, we would broadcast an open call in the arena and divy up people into lines where a coach would make a call if they progress. Gut check call but time doesnt allow for more stringent criteria. Whoever is left standing, joins the team on the lines.

Is it a guaranteed recipe for success? Maybe not one that results in a W, but in terms of entertainment and the stuff of legends, this game goes down in history!
