S80 PT #5: How Did It Come To This Due: Sunday, January 19th @ 11:59 PM PST

Ooh what a good prompt. I would want to cast a wide net and pull players from many different areas. Team staff would be really important, and probably the highest skill level possible. Id want to be sure I got as many defenders from the staff, plus a solid center. With Dunkler already on defense, a few more solid defenders to spread amongst the lineup would help stabilize things. Plus you are going to need to win some faceoffs if possible.
Next is the beer leagues. A solid beer league goalie is probably most important here, as they just need to survive. We’ve all seen EBUG’s do plenty against SHL talent, so this doesn’t seem like a stretch. Then we just need bodies to fill things out. Id rather go for beer leaguers that have good conditioning than actual skill. We just need to be able to hustle and stay with the other team’s forwards. Not looking to score any more goals.
Can I find a high schooler? Or someone who rollerblades the boardwalk everyday? I think we can do this.

Written option 1:
Holding onto the 6-3 lead means only one thing: Capable bodies. I just need people who can skate good enough to not let the opponents shoot freely at an open net. All we need is sacrifice and throwing the puck away. So Niclas Sundqvist needs to find a bunch of lunatics. And who are better lunatics than the local goalies? These people are used at throwing themselves in front of the pucks and can bring a hell of a sacrifice if they must. Not only that, but having a chance to play as a skater in an important game is truly to be a unique experience for them so the chances of having them go all in is much higher. Of course, we need more bodies. And who better than the staff who always give all to the team but never had the chance to skate for the team?

In the end, we scrape through barely, by pure will. Win: 6-5

So I've been hugely impressed by Toronto in this playoff so far. The fact that they are a sub .500 win team and have been able to make it to the Eastern Conference Finals by knocking off two really strong teams in New England and Philadelphia is incredible. I don't know that they get past Tampa (albeit I would have said the same in the two rounds before this), but the fact that they've gotten this far is an accomplishment in itself. I know that at least for the last three seasons Toronto was technically a better team due to their record in the regular season, but the success that they have had this year tells me that this team, even though it is likely a case of a goalie catching fire and players making the right plays at the right times, I think that this team has reset some expectations about how things should look for that organization going forward.

There were many teams that improved significantly over the course of the past 2 seasons, but no team made the leap quite like the Atlanta Inferno this season. They went from tenth in league in S79 to first in S80 with a 36 point jump up. Their offense was a major reason for this as they led the league with 355 goals for, a 68 goal increase from last season. In the season predictions point task, most users had them placing around 3rd or 4th in their division, while only one user out of 318 had them finishing first in the entire league. So while they under-performed a bit last season, this jump was certainly not expected. They have a team with a nice mixture of veterans, players at their peak, and younger guys who will peak in a few seasons so I think this level of success is sustainable even if they don’t come first again.

Hockey is known for the emergency back up goalie. Every once and a while, the nation rallies around a guy coming out from the actual stands and strapping on pads when something unheard of happens. But the last thing that any player wants is for all 16 of their teammates to go down in a sudden fit with food poisoning. And so while the referees have given me an hour to try and field the rest of our roster, I'm not exactly sure the best way to do it. Usually, hockey teams can use the first few minutes between periods for entertainment of the fans that are in attendance. Instead, I will use that time to hold a quick set of try-out like activities with folks in the stands who think they have what it takes to play for Chicago in the rest of the contest. I'll take the top 15 players and get the equipment staff to get them suited up for our next period. And we don't even need to hold any open tryouts for the fill-in goalie. As I mentioned, we've already got an EBUG in the arena. There's no way we are holding onto this lead, but you bet its gonna be an experience that those folks will never forget!

Thanks Jove for my sig

Greyson Willis has seen this one before. Don't ask why, or how, but this is not the only time he has been the last man standing and had to hold a lead. All he needs is enough guys on the ice to help. He goes to the broadcast booth and grabs the PA system microphone. "Attention fans, anyone who is currently wearing a Carolina Kraken jersey and can fit into a size large chest pad, please come down to the penalty box." This would give the team more than enough people to put on the ice, and even if they aren't very good at hockey, they don't need to be to play for 10 minutes. Plus, gathering that many people that quickly also gives them some time to warm up, so Willis can teach them zone defense and tell them to make sure the other team doesn't get any shots on net. Let's be real, we won't be playing any offense for the rest of the game, but all that matters is getting that extra tally in the win category. They don't ask how, they ask how many.

This is a tough one, as Solaire does not really know how to judge how great some people can be on skate, and what intangibles they could have that would replace what his team already has. Damn you food poisoning!! But in all honesty, with only an hour to go, Solaire would hold open tryouts from members of the crowd to see if they could compare to what he does know his teammates could do and see if that would fit in on the ice and build some quick team chemistry. This quick chemistry building lesson would also see how well they are on their skates and hopefully be able to make a game out of the rest of the third period, because in all honesty if we lose it’s because we had a bunch of crowd members on the ice, but if we win? We had a bunch of members of the crowd on the ice to help lead us to victory! It’s a win win situation no matter how you spin it.

I think that seeing Toronto make the conference finals really confused and interested a lot of people. Toronto was 7th in the league last season and was headed towards being one of the top teams in the league after constant rebuilds and failed pushes for a long time. Then when they were hit with the cap overage penalty they took a nose-dive this season to 14th. I think a lot of people would have expected Toronto to be deflated after this and consider it just another one of those failed pushes. As someone that played in Toronto for a season I can tell you that while times have been tough for the North Stars, that team is resilient as ever and always working towards that Challenge Cup. I don't know how this playoff push will end for them, but I know that Toronto will be back next season and win or lose they will be tough to break.

I will take my former two time Team Los Angeles Panthers. The Panthers was my 2nd ever game as SHL User. Chris McZehrl was traded from the West Kendall Platoon to the Los Angeles Panthers lead by Checkmate. GOD McZehrl, my third player was then also a part of the Los Angeles Kings lead by Wasty. GOD McZehrl started as Defender but as member of Minnesota Chiefs there was a move to Forward. So last seasons the Los Angeles Panthers were very competive and one of the top teams of the SHL. Season 78 as Cup Champs to last season first round loses against the Calgary Dragons in a bad way. This season they fought against the New Orleans Spectres after 7 games. New Orleans then lost against the Texas Renegades in 6 games. So we can see that the Los Angeles Panthers lately lost their power. Regression is one of the main reasons. I also see some more teams in the next 1-4 seasons with that problem. So it is important to have more good enough prospects in the pipeline to step up. So those teams can stay for a longer time at the top. Of Course Trades and Free Agents can help there but trading away the future isnt the best scenario mostly. Also not having spots for the Prospects they need to be called up instead to lose via waiver. So the question is always how to handle things for right now and the future. Cant wait to see the way of the Los Angeles Panthers in the future.

So with the entire team down except me, we are in more trouble than usual. But we find ourselves with a three goal lead so we can do this. So I run out onto the street and start sizing people up, I find the two biggest and meanest looking guys I can find. They are ready to fight. They'll be on defense. I start throwing random trash at people and whoever manages to catch the trash rather than dodge it will be in goal. Since I'm a forward I only need two more. So I just find two big slow guys and tell them to stand in front of the opposing goal and screen as much as they can. The strategy works for the first five minutes but the defensemen are running out of steam. They have allowed two goals but we still have a lead. I manage to deflect the puck off one of my big burly forwards and score another goal. Game over. Then I wake up because I realize we're not in the playoffs.

Option 1:

This is never the situation you want to see in any hockey game. Halfway through the 3rd period and the team is barely holding on to the 1 goal lead. Suddenly half the team goes down with food poisoning and you’re finding extra buckets for them to do their business in and now you’re relying on one of the only healthy players to find people to fill the roster.

Luckily, Jussi Mutou has a solution. You see, last summer he helped a bunch of Samoans who had a flat tire. Those same Samoans took an interest in what Jussi did for a living and got him to teach them how to skate. Jussi is now coming back to collect that favour.

The plan: clog up the defensive zone with as many Samoans as legally allowed in the sport of hockey. And clog it up they did. Mutou, backed by 4 massive Samoans, blocked every shot sent towards the Patriotes net until the final buzzer went to end the game and grant the Patriotes the victory.
