Off-Season Pass

8. The Seattle Argonauts were extremely fortunate to have not just one, not just two, but three players with All-Star calibre seasons! With two defenders and one forward from Seattle being nominated, all three have not even hit regression yet which makes the future bright for this Argonauts squad. Shadow Fenix will be participating in yet another All-Star game, with this being his third in just his fourth season. Leading the Argonauts in scoring year over year, this is a worthy selection by the committee. Kal Akar Kekkonen and Simo Jaaskelainen both make the All-Star Expo this season after phenomenal defensive performances throughout the season. Kekkonen put up 21 goals and 54 points as a defender which is amazing, and Simo put up an astounding 324 blocked shots sitting at second in the league as well as 31 points and 28 takeaways. A great group of users that definitely deserve their spot amongst the All-Stars not just for their on-ice performance but also for being great people to have in the locker room here in Seattle. Tell me about your teammate who made the all star expo! Who are they, why were they an obvious choice to make the All Star roster, and what do you expect from them this ASE? (If more than one of your teammates made the game, pick one of those players other than yourself. If you are the only player on your team selected for the all star game so far, write who else should had been picked from your team.)

Rolling into the All-Star Expo on the back of a team-leading 97 point season is my longtime centerman, Ubba Lodbrok. I expect huge numbers from Ubba in the new round robin. I feel like people don’t realize how good this guy is, having played with wingers like Woody and I the past four seasons. His selection is justified and he’s going to prove it to any doubters when the games start, take it to the bank. After finishing a +40 against all types of competition and standing at 6’6”, he may not look the part of the typical silky-handed all-star, but he’s going to be perfect for this new format.

Write a letter to someone your player cares deeply about from the perspective of your player about their offseason plans.

Dear Mom,

I know you always appreciate the written word and receiving mail, so I wanted to tell you a little bit about my offseason plans in this letter! We can discuss more, as always, at some point over the phone. As you know this has been quite the season. It marks my 8th total season here in North America since crossing between the 3 I played in juniors for Detroit and now the 5 I’ve played with Philadelphia. In a lot of ways, I feel like the move forced me to grow up fast and I think I’ve been ahead of the maturity curve for a while. But now, I’m starting to feel – I don’t know – old? And yet, there’s still so much left to do and I feel I’m just starting to enter my prime as a player.

As you know, Avery and I have been seeing each other for most of the last two seasons. She’s great for me – keeping even keeled and there for me when times are tough at the rink. She’s met up with us on some of our trips and is always smiling when we come back to Philly from the longer road swings. As much as I’ve said I feel at home in Philadelphia over the years, with Avery its starting to feel like it IS home. Like this is my home now. So, you shouldn’t be surprised to hear that I’m spending the offseason here for training but on my customary week off that I usually spend back home, I’m going somewhere tropical with Avery and I think I’m going to propose. Its time for the next step.

By the time you receive this it should be just about the time I’m doing it – please act surprised when we call – and clear your plans for next offseason so that we can share that mother/son dance.

I think that the new format is a good idea but kind of interesting. I wish there was more info on how the historical players were selected. Like what was the criteria or was it strictly just voted on. But overall I think its cool to see some historical players lace up the skates again and play in the All-Star game with todays great players. -65 words

4. +1 TPE
I mean a line with Ron Mexico, Jason Visser, and really anyone else from the Central is crazy line. Elizabeth Doyle and Rebecca Montagne is great goalie tandem, definitely the best out of all the 4 teams. As for a Defensive pair. Alonzo Garbanzo was such a great defender back in the day and to pair him with Ho Lee-Smokes would be unstoppable. -63 words

5.  +1 TPE
Unexpected players thats a rough one as I dont want to call out anyone. Mabye all of Atlanta players..... its not like they had a great season or anything. But honestly, I think all of these players are deserving to be here. Some play on teams that are in a hard rebuild so the stats do not show what that player does for their team. Still got to honor those players. -71 words

6. +2 TPE
Captains of each team should be a player that has the skillset to change the game and someone that all players look up to. Obviously some of the historical players will undoubtedly be the answer here.
For the Atlantic I think the Captain is Bojo Biscuit. A stud defenseman that definitely has that presence and game changing skills
For the Central, this is a tough one. Obviously between Ron Mexico and Jason Visser. Ultimately i think it has to be Ron Mexico, who our MVP award is named after.
For the North, I hate to say it because there are probably someone who deserves it more but Aaron Wilson.
And for the Pacific, the workhouse, Esa Anrikkanen, who played in 1458 games. -122 words

Starting lineup for the Southern Conference in the SMJHL would be
Left Wing - Valtteri Pulkkinen - 3rd in the league in goals scored
Center -  Kim Chaewon - a Faceoff master and is able to distribute the puck well
Right Wing- Kral King - a very offesnive weapon and lead a very young squad
Left Defense -  Kenneth Lind - had the most goals scored amongs defenders in the South
Right Defense - Ty Justice - most assists in the league among defenders
Goalie - Honza Havran - 4th in league in wins, 1st in GAA, 2nd in GSAA.

Instead of a game between two teams we get a short tournament of 4 teams. Write your predictions for the 6 game round robin and the playoffs. Do you see it as anyone's game or is there a clear favorite among the teams? How much impact do you expect from the added Hall of Fame players?

I think the round robin games will end up mostly even with Atlantic and Pacific coming out on top. Those two teams are also my predictions to make the finals for the playoffs. I think both the Central and North rosters can take a game or two from the other teams, but Im not sure they have the firepower to win it all. Ill admit that the hall of fame players are a true wild card here. My knowledge of these players isn’t great, so unless they have an award named after them Im not sure what to make of them really.
Looking over the rosters, here are my thoughts
Atlantic – this season’s division was absolutely stacked with Tampa and Atlanta taking the top spots in the Eastern conference. But beyond that, Philly and Baltimore have made the finals recently featuring players on this roster. This team feels strong in all aspects of the game.
Pacific – Similar to the Atlantic, this team features players that have been key parts of cup runs for the Pride and Panthers. There is quite a bit of young guns from Calgary, Seattle, and the rebuilding Blizzard.
Central  - Some very recognizable names from some strong teams the last few seasons. While Texas and New Orleans were never able to punch through and get that cup victory, can they combine forces for a win in the Expo? This team feels like it will be strong defensively, but may lack some firepower.
North – Toronto made a great push this season in the playoffs, and New England has had enough success they could probably fill an all star team on their own. But this roster features many pieces from rebuilding Hamilton and Montreal.
I predict the Atlantic will take the tournament just like they overpowered the league this season.

2. Do you like the new format? Why or why not?
I love the new format. The Hall of Fame is an important part of the league that can feel pretty inaccessible to newer users like myself. Am I a newer user still? Unless I recognize the user behind the player, or they had an award named after them it can be hard to understand how dominant a hall of famer was. This is a great way to find out about the greats from the past.

I also think the switch to a tournament is huge for the event. Making the all star game was always the biggest part of it to me. I frequently tuned out after rosters were announced, as one stream without much on the line didn’t really do anything for me. Im hoping the additional games doesn’t put any stress on the stream team, since it is more work after all.

2. Do I like the new format
I'm a BIG fan of the new format. It allows for more players from each team to make an impact, and it also allows for more comradery between players in a division. It also opens up for some crazy media posts about different rivalries turned into teammates. Of course, I haven't written any media about this, nor do I have plans, but it is the opportunity that matters when creating new content for a league like the Simulation Hockey League. I will say, however, that there is the potential that one division might just stomp the other divisions, which would make it less fun, but we'll have to see how it plays out.

4. Which of the teams can field the best first line, first pair or goalie tandem? What makes them the best?

It has to be Seattle, right? For too long they've been overlooked over and over again for the All Star Game. The only player who has been getting in has been my player, Shadow Fenix, and he's a bit of a bum. Now, however, he's joined by Kal Akar Kekkonen and Simo Jaaskelainen. And sure, you might ask "How would a center and two defenseman be able to create a single top line?" I would respond by telling you that I don't have all the answers; I'm not a simulated professional hockey coach. I do know, however, that these players are all dynamic in their own way. So if Fenix has to come back and play a 3-player-line defense, or if the two defenseman have to play as forwards, I'm confident that they'll be able to do it. This dynamic ability is what makes me so confident that it is Seattle who has the best players and can field the best first line.

I am so glad to see that our goalie in Texas, Anthony Dionne, has been selected to the all star game. Season 80 was Dionne's 14th season as an SHL goalie in Texas, and the fact that he is still making all star games is truly a testament to how good of a goalie he is. Dionne is one of the main reasons Texas has been in cup contention and having playoff runs almost every season during the 70's. He is the true backbone to the Renegades, and is relied upon every single night to perform against the league's best. As the starting goaltender, he is in between the pipes against teams like San Francisco, Atlanta, and other top teams. We expect a lot from him, and he always finds a way to deliver. In Season 80, Dionne had 28 wins to go along with a 3.53 goals against average and a 0.899 save percentage. Dionne also pitched 4 shutouts during the regular season. Everyone around the league knows how good of a goalie Dionne is, and it is awesome to see him selected to the big game once again in his 14th season. The reliable goaltender also isn't going anywhere, so do not be surprised to see him back in this spot for Season 81!

Dad - just completed my 9th season in the SHL. I now know what you meant all those years ago about what getting older does to your body! All joking aside, I feel like I am in the best shape of my life and I cannot wait to get to work this offseason. It was another heartbreaking finish this past season, as we could not get it done in the conference finals where we lost to the eventual cup champions. Although we did not win the cup, I am still just as proud of this team. You always stressed to me how important it is to be a leader in everything I do, and with some of our veterans getting traded away I know I will be counted on even more for our young players this next season. I hope you and mom are doing well in the cold weather, and I look forward to getting some skates in with you when I come back home soon. Love you both - Jack.

I do not really like the new format because my player was not picked for the all star game which is hugely dissapointing. I was of the league in short handed goals and I think that I should have gotten a spot on that roster. I am kidding, my player sucks ass.

3. 1 TPE
To spice things up a bit I would not let the all star game be about the best players, but about the mediocre players. This way more people get a shot at being an all star one day as most of us are mediocre at best in this league full over achievers.
