Tell me about your teammate who made the all star expo! Who are they, why were they an obvious choice to make the All Star roster, and what do you expect from them this ASE? (If more than one of your teammates made the game, pick one of those players other than yourself. If you are the only player on your team selected for the all star game so far, write who else should had been picked from your team.)

There was more than one player selected from the Winnipeg Aurora this season (three in fact), but I only get to write about one of them so I'll choose Langston Hardison-Laurent a.k.a. LHL. So why did they pick him? Probably because he was leading the team in points with 81 which, compared to the rest of the league, might not be that impressive (not even top 10 worthy sadly), but given the strength of our team last season it's quite impressive. LHL also made the league's top 5 in goals so that was quite impressive, despite being tied with a few other players and still 20 goals behind the leader. What do I expect from LHL at the event? Well, hopefully a lot of goals and points in the end, but this will depend a little on the linemates he gets. We do have two of our defenders in the mix as well, so they could pair them together and hope for the best, but I wasn't allowed to write about more than one player, so I'll stop here. Regardless, I'm happy for my teammates that were selected here and I hope they'll enjoy being part of the event this year.

Make a case for a player or user of your choice to win an award or multiple awards. Is it a clear case or do you think it would be a pretty close vote for the awards committee. Or is your case more out of left field and you hope that the awards team will see this in time to read the stats as they should be?

Awards are a super difficult topic every season and everyone has their own opinions about them and in the end there will always be some people who aren't happy about the results. We just have to live with it. So many factors go into choosing nominees and then picking the winners. It's much easier for me to look at things since my own player sucks so badly, I don't need to consider him at all. However, I will look at goalies, because that's what I know best. Who should win the McBride? Let's start with that question. I do not consider wins a goalie stat that should be looked at here, that's a team stat, so I will mostly focus on SV%, a little on GAA (not primarily), shutouts and perhaps even GSAA. Looking at all that I would consider Anastasia Söderström (CGY) who might not lead in wins or GAA, but has a very good SV% (over 900), 2 shutouts and an impressive 29.41 GSAA. You could make an argument for Justin Time (SFP) as well with 6 shutouts, a slightly worse SV% (not much) and of course leading in GAA and a still quite decent GSAA With 16.82 but also playing on a much stronger team who of course won the cup and you can't simply make it easy and pick the goalie on the best team and give them the best goalie award. Calgary "only" finished 10th in the standings.

11. 240 Words - 4 TPE

The off-season is one of change for Peter Tingle. His current team the Baltimore Platoon have changed their General Manager which has triggered change in Baltimore. Players have been shipped off to new teams in order for Baltimore to tear it down and start over. Tingle is the most recent casualty of this tear down as he has been shipped off to New England. This has come at a good time because Tingle has been pondering retiring after this next season. He’s very late into his career and is getting tired but the trade to New England has breathed some life into him. The plan is to play two seasons with New England and then it’s time to retire. So for the remainder of the off-season Tingle needs to familiarize himself with his new organization. He will need to move all his stuff to his new apartment, get acquainted with management and coaching staff. Meeting all the players will be exiting too. A lot of training is going into this offseason to be the best he can be for this next season as well as learning the new systems he is going to be playing. The biggest change for Tingle is that he’s moving from a center to a defensemen for his last two seasons. This is a massive change for Tingle but he’s always naturally been a defensive minded player and feels the transition will be a smooth one.

Quote:6. Who do you think should be captain of each team? Why?

It’s tempting to say that the captains should be the HOF members, as there’s a tendency for members of a team’s leadership to be the players with the most seniority and experience in the league. However, I think doing so would draw a little too much focus away from the all-stars that are currently lacing up their skates in the SHL.

Speaking as someone (maybe the only one this season?) with a player in both the current SHLer and HOFer category for this tournament, as good as the HOF presence is as a new thing, making the SHL All-Star Game is not an easy thing to do for most players. Therefore, when they do make it, the spotlight should be on them, not on players whose legacies are already established.

With all this in mind, I’d set the following players as leadership for their teams:

ATL C: Johnny Wagner-Svenson
ATL A’s: Tony Soprano, Cale Salad

CTL C: Chris Valtentine
CTL A’s: Jack St. Clair, Lester Oiduser

NTH C: Daniel Grumathan
NTH A’s: Pork Tenderloin, Jarrod Lakemore

PCF C: Domink Winters
PCF A’s: Oskar Scholz, Elena Maximova

I tried to select a mix of forwards and defenders, with a preference for players that have been playing ASGs for longer than the newcomers. This I think makes sense for determining which players have seniority and therefore are best suited to leadership positions.

I know this is a homer pick, but I’m going to go ahead with it anyway because there are not enough kind things to say about these people.

I think hotdog and micool, GMs of the Atlanta Inferno, are deserving of taking home the awards for best GMs and best coaches.

For GMs, they have created a fantastic environment in which to participate in the SHL. The locker room is always busy, and therefore there’s no shortage of talent to make use of on the ice.

As for coaching, Atlanta was not the highest-TPE team in the SHL this season but had the best record of any team, and at least for the regular season (upon which the awards are determined) were a step ahead of their rivals, some of whom were brimming with TPE and high-talent players.

4. Which of the teams can field the best first line, first pair or goalie tandem? What makes them the best? (80 Words, +1 TPE)

In terms of a 1-2 tandem, I think that the Central division has the best overall pair. While Dionne/Lodge likely hold the highest average TPE among all the duo’s, I think that just in general both are incredible goalies who any team would be lucky to have. Lodge is hitting their peak as perhaps the strongest shot stopper in the league, and to have a commanding veteran like Dionne there to help, you really can’t go wrong with this partnership!

6. Who do you think should be captain of each team? Why? (220 Words, +4 TPE)

Due to personal preferences, I would say that in almost all cases I think any all-star captain should come from the team that won the division they are in.  Given that, starting in the Pacific I would look at conferences/division/league champions SFP as the obvious choice. From that team I think the clear choices would be Rowan O’Bernie, and then Justin Time. Given they likely have some leadership structure already, this makes an easy combo of veterans to assign a C and A to. In the Central I would go with New Orleans (despite Texas having a good shout) based on the same logic. From those selected, my personal vote would go towards Lester Oiduser, who has been a force in defense for the Specters for some time. The Atlantic conferences gives us Atlanta as their top seed, and plenty of good options from their group of all-stars. While Billy Herrington or Georg N’Zola are perfectly great choices, I think based on the season that Jae-ik Barron just had, that it would be a great nod to let them captain for the team. Finally, the North East champion Buffalo has many, perhaps too many great choices. In the end I think I would go with Jarrod Lakemore, although considering some of the other options, its hard to go wrong here!

8. The Teammate One (126 Words, +2 TPE)

The lone representative (and teammate) for Montreal is Xavier Beausoleil. Despite the Patriotes finishing bottom of the East, Xavier is entirely worth of being on the all-star roster. From a TPE perspective, they are the best player on the team, and the obvious choice for a representative for the team. However, the in-sim performance was also there to match, as they carried a team-leading 74 points. No attacking player logged more average ice time then Xavier for the Patriotes, and overall has continued to be a leader for the attacking unit. If all-star teams had anything like an SHL style locker room, Takk would obviously make a great addition there as well, just an all around great representative for Montreal to have for the upcoming games.  Patriotes

2. Do you like the new format? Why or why not?

I do like the new format. I know it's basically the same amount of work split up into two, but it doesn't feel like it. Before, champ week felt like a huge mental block I really had to sit down and be ready to work on, to do 16 TPE worth of work all at once cause I know I wouldn't want to come back to it later to finish it up. Now it seems like there's a lot more to do in bite size chunks, which means I can just come into it and knock off a bit whenever I feel like I have nothing else going on. It's a lot easier to do 8 TPE worth of tasks at a time than 16. Now if only we could make milestones a bit easier to reach for forwards, I could type even less. Instead you just get this last bit where I'm totally not padding for 150 words. (163 words, 3 TPE)

3. What would you do to spice up the new All-star format even further?

If you wanted to spice up the all star game even more, you've got to give it some weight, like baseball. I don't know how much I want the all star game to matter when it comes to the regular season, but allowing the all star game to do something like shape conference structures or something could be interesting. I mean, given the current format we have, we could do some base conferences on tournament results, so no one would really know who they're going against often in the regular season until the conclusion of the all star game. Would it be hell on the file makers and potentially simmers? Definitely. Would it foster season long rivalries? Probably not. Would it lead to increased engagement from the users and increased excitement for the all star game? Also probably not. So uhh...maybe we don't do that. But it's a cool idea to think about at least! 2. I think it’s a fun new format. All-star games can become an afterthought for most players. Adding several more games and more teams will necessitate that even more players need to play, which will draw even more attention to the All-star games. The addition of former legends will only make it an even bigger spectacle. (56 words, 4/8 TPE)

3. I saw someone mention the NBA’s live draft by the captains. I think that is a great idea that could be looked at. There doesn’t need to be “A format” for the All-Star week. Nothing is stopping the league from changing format now and then making the all-star event more dynamic. One could make the captains be chosen by popular vote, the committee’s vote or, even just random from a pool of nominees.(73 Words 5/8 TPE)

7. I’m going with the Southern Conferenc. If I did north it would just be tonnes of Quebec players (QCC represent) which while well-earned is a bit boring. We have the standard 6 to solve, LW, C, RW, LD, RD, and G.

LW: Valteri Pulkkinen. Leading scorer from the South, He’ll get you goals and assists, a true master of offense in the SMJHL.
C: Kim Chaewon. Just their 2nd season but they are 2nd in assists in the conference and 4th in total points. 13th in FO% also gives the team a good shot at winning the puck. Hard to believe they are only in their 2nd season looking at what they have accomplished this season.
RW: Scott Fortune. Ultimately forwards, especially wings, are there to score. Fortune has managed to do that while averaging less time than any of the top-scoring RWs in the same area. Hetaksh has to get an honorable mention though, what a rookie season.
LD: Pavel Mintyukov. 2nd most ATOI of any skater in the league. Mintyukov has engorged themselves with minutes and managed to hit 50 points at a reasonable efficiency. Leading scoring for LDs out of the south, worthy nominee.
RD: Ty Justice. I didn’t want a 3rd Maine player on here but the gap from Justice to even 2nd is to big to reasonably motivate going for anyone else. Leading all defensemen in points, what more do you want?
G: Trent Mackenzie. What Mackenzie lacks in shutouts, GSAA, and any other stat compared to Havran is made up with one simple fact. They played the most games out of any goaltender. Being able to put up as good analytics as they did with 22 more games played easily makes up for the slightly lower values. A true workhorse goalie!
