2. Do you like the new format? Why or why not?

William Salming does not like the new All Star format. Why? There is a clear reason for that. All Star event should be an event where only best of the best play. Now when there are 20 players from each division, it is just way too much. The correct amount of players per division should be a maximum of eight. I would like to see maybe even lower number, about six best players from each division. And then you would play an exhibition game between East and West. 12 players per team and two goalies. That way the value of the All Star nomination would be extremely high. This season All Star nomination unfortunately has lost its value and it is tough to see when average guys get invites too to play alongside elite players who have earned their invitation more. So, I would put this current format to the trash bin as quickly as possible and then return towards a format where only best players of the league will be invited to the All Star event. That would be much better.

8. Written, 50 to 200+ words. The Teammate One
Tell me about your teammate who made the all star expo! Who are they, why were they an obvious choice to make the All Star roster, and what do you expect from them this ASE? (If more than one of your teammates made the game, pick one of those players other than yourself. If you are the only player on your team selected for the all star game so far, write who else should had been picked from your team.)

There are even five players from Hamilton Steelhawks who got nominated to the All-Star game of the season 80. They are of course Trevor Lahey, Jani Mänty, Activity Check, Robo Sven and Will Nuck. I would like to talk about the latest one, Will Nuck. He won the scoring title of all defenders and was that's why a clear candidate to play in the All Star event. He was the only player who had a point per game. Nuck's point total was exactly 66 points. It was four more than Georg N'Zola who represents Atlanta. Then there were a three-way tie for a 3rd spot. But back to Nuck. He was a fantastic PP1 QB and scored amazingly 21 goals in 66 matches. It was also most among defencemen. Job well done. His wrist shot especially was very accurate from the blue line and between faceoff dots. I also liked his passing skills. Brekaout passes were hard and he rarely made mistakes.

11. Dear Mom

I am writing to let you know that I am just about to start my off season training and I was thinking about you and all the times you pushed me to be the best me I can be. This off season will be much like most, I will be concentrating on some physical stats like acceleration as well as spending time with the coaches to improve my shot blocking abilty and timing. I Also have set aside some much needed time on my positioning and puck handling. I think the biggest benefit to my game will be the wind sprints and beep tests to hone my acceleration. I feel like my speed and athletic prowess has been my single greatest asset sense joining the SHL. Secondly I have had some great sessions improving my on ice positioning and mostly my defensive zone positioning. All the coaches and training staff have been top tier people and have helped me grow in leaps and bounds. The jump from junior to the pro's has been a demanding jump and the off season training has been a vital necessity for me to just stay relevant. I wish you and dad all the best and I look forward to seeing you soon.

12. I know that I am in the league All Star selection discussion this season for my work on the blueline. I would really like to make it know that I am honored to just be in the conversation and that people feel like I may have a shot at the prestigious award. I hope I get a fair chance and I wish everyone goodluck!

I do like the new format. It not only offers more opportunity for currently active players to be involved in the All-Star game, but I really enjoy the idea of bringing back superstars of old. I'm bummed that I didn't make the all-star game this year, because I would have loved the opportunity to play with Winnipeg greats Jason Visser and Ron Mexico. And with Alonzo Garbanzo? Man, that would be fun. It is also a great idea of tying together the old and the young so new users can hear about the old users. It would be nice if you cycle through the old All-Stars so we see a wide variety over the next few years.

11. Offseason Plans (+3 TPE)

Dear Mikko Rashford,

Thank you for coming back to Winnipeg. The world is now in balance because you are back where you belong. Don't pay attention to the fact that you are now old and decrepit like me, Marcel Beck. Yes, we are in the final waning hours of our time in the limelight, but oh what a glorious time we had together. We had more cup runs than is fair, but the universe canceled us out and only gave us our one. One is better than none, and I enjoyed nearly every minute of it. You are one of the best wingers in SHL history, and it's crazy that I got to play with a legend for that long. This offseason, as you look forward to donning the Aurora teal again, I hope we can have fun on the ice together and connect for some more goals. Who knows, now that the dominating Rashford is back on the ice, we may just see another Cup Finals yet.

Your teammate forever,
Marcel Beck

1. Milestones +3

2. I do like the new format. Even as someone that’s been on the J all star committee for years now, there is a little bit of the all star game that has felt a bit stale. This is the first big change I’ve seen to the format in the 4 years I’ve been on the site and I think there’s a lot of positives to it. I love the idea of bringing back old players, and I do think splitting it between the divisions will allow more players who may not have made the game in the old format to make it in this one, which is always a benefit. +2

7. For the Northern Conference, my starting forwards would be Cristoforo Roccamontepiano, Randolph Thompson-Smythe, and Jason Bourne. Roccamontepiano led the league in points by almost 20 and was the only player to achieve at least 70 assists, and ended the season with a positive giveaway/takeaway ratio. Jason Bourne led the league in goals with 56, and while he doesn’t do much defensively, he’ll be set up to score goals. Thompson-Smythe finished at just under 100 points and can play right wing. At defense, I would do the combo of Peter and Big Sweg. And in goal I would start Katharina Rosenthal, who led the league in save percentage with a .915. +2

8. Anastasia Soderstrom was a no brainer for the Pacific. She was the best goalie in the league last season, leading all starting goalies in save percentage with a .908. Her GAA was a little high at a 3.4, but based on the 5 goalies in the Pacific she was the runaway best option for the Pacific. +1

Still relatively new to the league but this new format seems to be a great addition. Adding legends of old is a nice touch as well. Even though I'm a few years away from participating in one it even gives players on the sidelines something to keep an eye on.

Jason Bourne may have been the most deserving of all Newfoundland Berserkers. The clear leader of this offense, the connection he established with Jett Labryinth was a thing of beauty.

He led the league in goals scored with 56 and topped the 100 point mark for the 1st time in his career which I'm sure will be filled with numerous seasons like this. As impressive as the 56 number is he also led the power play about as efficiently as one could with 17 tallies with the man advantage.

He was also 3rd on the team in assists while having a very respectable plus minus. He also protected the puck trying to limit turnovers as much as possible and was always the one the team looked to whenever a comeback was needed generally being the first over the boards when the game was on the line.

For this all star game it would be hard to imagine him not being top line LW. The coach would also be smart to pair him with his center Jett Labryinth. I would expect multiple goals from Bourne in this game while also being on top Power play or at very least leading the second unit. While this isn't his first all star appearance it is nice to see him begin to get the accolades he deserves and would be shocked if he isn't in this game next year as he looks to cap off an impressive SMJHL career.

2. Do you like the new format? Why or why not?
I think the expansion of the all star game is both a good and bad thing. Bad because now it doubles? The amount of nominations to the game and makes that honour start to dwindle a bit when it comes to hall of fame bids with now awards being so scarce almost in comparison. The good though is it drives more recognition overall which I think out weighs the negatives as more engagement and celebration of users is always a plus for the league as a whole. With so many users and teams sometimes you can go an entire career without having a shot to earn any sort of push from the league which makes it hard to want to recreate because if you earn 2000 TPE and get no highs from it then what is the point? Overall a good change I feel - just need to give some of the lesser teams more of a nod as well. (155 words)

3. What would you do to spice up the new All-star format even further?

1) Hold a graphics contest to design jerseys for the event with a nice but not over the top payout each all star week for those chasing some media $$$
2) Hold a vote for where the game can take place for that season which the winner being defaulted from future votes for at least 5 seasons
3) Indicate beside the players how many all star appearances this is for them
4) Offer some recipes for local food from the region where the game is being played and have people take pictures and pay out a 1 time bonus for pictures of their delicious food and their rating out of 10 on how much they liked it. (106 words)

2. Do you like the new format? Why or why not?

I am probably going to show how clueless I am here but I am guessing that this pertains to the new format of awarding more TPE the more words you write for each prompt? If so then I think that is definitely a good change. Sometimes you can really get a lot of words out of a topic if you have some sort of passion for what is involved, so I would rather do a really long answer for more TPE with some depth instead of just a bunch of short prompts (usually at least). It allows our users to go into more detail in their writings and maybe we'll get some pretty thoughtful answers out of it instead of people abruptly stopping around 200 words or so. Ironic that this isn't going to be a long answer for me but that is to be expected! I will say that I'm not a huge fan of splitting up CW and All Star Week tasks like this if that was the intention with this question. I feel like I lose motivation to do All Star tasks because I just did a "larger" PT the week before so it seems like a lot to do again instead of getting it out of the way in one sitting. But in the end it isn't a huge deal, at least I will do all my tasks unlike last season.

6. Who do you think should be captain of each team? Why?

I am going to go full homer and say that Tony Soprano should be the captain of the ATL All Star team. For one, he is on my team the Forge and two he has been very good the last handful of seasons and I feel like he has definitely earned the honor. For CTL I will give it to Alonzo Garbanzo because I actually remember the user and that player was supposed to be legendary. NTH will be Elizabeth Doyle because we need some goalie love with the captains. PCF will be Tony Pepperoni because he has a fun name.

Make a case for a player or user of your choice to win an award or multiple awards. Is it a clear case or do you think it would be a pretty close vote for the awards committee. Or is your case more out of left field and you hope that the awards team will see this in time to read the stats as they should be?
No surprise here, but I think Jae-ik Barron is in for a busy awards ceremony. The Atlanta Inferno center absolutely steam rolled the competition this season leading the lead in goals and points. His 64 goals ties Adam Prpich during his MVP caliber season in S75, but what's more impressive is the next closest goal scorer this season only had 45 goals, almost 20 less! His 121 points was also a runaway leader this season, 10 points more than the next player. More importantly, he led his Atlanta Inferno to an incredible 54-10-2 record that secured the President's Trophy for the team. He's already secured the McDonald and Karpotsov awards, and he's the clear front runner for the Mexico and Khan awards this season. I wouldn't be shocked if he won all 4. In fact I'd be more shocked if he didn't. I'm excited to see what he and the Atlanta Inferno can do next season. They'll have a chip on their shoulder after a short playoff run. [168 words - 3 TPE]

13. Written, 50 to 200+ words. Hall of Representatives
This season's All-Star tournament features three hall of fame players from each division. If this is to return for next season which players you would like to see making it to the All-Star EXPO81 from each division. What criteria would you use? Would you try to pick out the best players or leave something for years to come? Make sure as many teams get represented as possible? Make up to 12 picks and explain your reasoning for them.
Seeing as this was the first one the names that made the teams aren't a huge surprise. Many of them are from waaay back and have an award named after them so it's no surprise to see them in the expo. With some of the heavy hitters out of the way I'd be excited to see who they bring in next time. As someone who was involved in the selection process there is no shortage of names available. One area in particular is the goaltender. I don't believe any hall of fame goaltenders made the shortlist, but there are a number who would really shine. The obvious choice is John McBride. The award for best goalie is named after him and for good reason too as he won it a lot. Another is Mike Honcho. Also has a goaltender award named after him. Some more recent names that are heavily decorated are Tommy Tuck and Artom Zhumbayev. One that is incredibly recent but no less worthy is Mat Smith who retired with the most wins all time.
