Deep Dive #1 - Playoff Picture (Part 1)
#1

With the regular season’s final week rapidly approaching, I thought I’d look at the current playoff picture, starting in the west, summarizing each series and how I think each team will do.

Western Conference

Seed #1: Ottawa  Highlanders vs. Seed #8: St. Louis  Scarecrows

The Ottawa Highlanders have been on a roll this season, posting a 30-15-3 record through 48 games. Their top scorer, Hotdog Lunch, is in his 4th and final year with the club and has a whopping 30 goals and 36 assists for 66 points this year. Their goalie, Jeff Kirkstone III, is also in his 4th and final year and is having a great season, supporting a 21-11-1 record, a 2.85 GAA and a .911 save%. St.Louis on the other hand is having a rough season with a 15-29-3 record through 47 games. Their top performer, Boogan McGillicuddy, is in his 3rd season with the club and has 24 goals and 34 assists for 58 points in 47 games. This series shouldn’t be close, Ottawa wins 4-0.

Seed #2: Maine  Timber vs. Seed #7: Nevada  Battleborn

Maine has had a great season so far this season, with a 31-17-0 record through 48 games. Their top player, Darby Reznor, is in his 4th and final year with the Timber and has 20 goals and 42 assists for 62 points in 48 games. Nevada has struggled so far this year, supporting a 17-28-3 record through 48 games. Their top scorer, Aurora Borealis, is in his 3rd year with the club and has 23 goals and 35 assists for 58 points in 48 games. This series should see Maine take control and end Nevada’s year. Maine wins 4-1.

Seed #3: Carolina  Kraken vs. Seed#6: Detroit  Falcons

Carolina is 52 games into their year, with an impressive record of 30-20-2, especially since they have a brutal rookie named Erkki Kaila. Their top scorer, Walbilly Koala, is in his last year in the SMJHL and has 21 goals and 41 assists for 62 points in 52 games. Detroit has been up and down all year, coming into these predictions with a 18-28-1 record through 47 games. Their top player, Matt Smith, is a rookie in the SMJHL and is playing very well with 18 goals and 23 assists for 41 points through 47 games. This series should be a good one but should see Carolina come out on top. Carolina wins 4-2.

Seed#4: San Diego  Tidal vs. Seed#5: Colorado  Raptors

San Diego has had a very mediocre year so far, with a record of 25-23-2 in 50 games. Their top scorer, Josie Cass, is in their final year with the Tidal and has a whopping 31 goals and 43 assists in 74 games. The Tidal's second place scorer, Ethan Cross, in his 3rd year with the team and has had a noteworthy season so far, posting 27 goals and 44 assists for 71 points in 74 games. Colorado has also had a very up and down year, supporting a 21-24-3 record through 48 games. Their top player Rocky Gislason, has one year left with the Raptors and is having a great year so far with 18 goals and 36 assists for 54 points in 48 games. This should be the closest matchup of the Western series and will be a hard-fought battle for both teams. San Diego should use home ice to their advantage to win this one. The Tidal take this one 4-3.

Although these matchups could change over the next week, these predictions are meant as a summary of where these teams are at up to this point.

May the best teams win!

“The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth comes again. ... There are neither beginnings nor endings to the Wheel of Time. But it was a beginning.”
