The SMJHL season is about to start, after we all got a taste of juniors hockey with preseason. In the 7-game span of preseason, teams got a pretty good look into what to expect, and also who the key contributors are likely to be. How is your team looking ahead of this season, and who are gonna be the main pieces of your squads?
Written Option: Talk about how your team is looking ahead of the coming season. Include at least 3 players who will be key to the success of the team, plus an explanation why they will be crucial. Must include 150 words. Graphic Option: Create a magazine cover style graphic with a headline for the team, plus a render for a key player on your team's squad. Make sure to identify which player the render is supposed to be in the graphic. You will receive 3 TPE for fulfilling all the requirements for any of the options. (You only need to do one of the options to get the credit and wont get additional credit even if you do more than one). Note that the wordcounter on the site can be inaccurate, if you want to ensure you reach the required wordcount you can use for example https://wordcounter.net/. All responses are due on Sunday, April 27th at 11:59 PST. NOTE: IF YOU SUBMIT/EDIT AFTER THE DEADLINE YOU WILL RECEIVE REDUCED/NO TPE. The St. Louis Scarecrows are looking to build on their somewhat surprising Season 81 playoff run when they made the third round (despite getting swept there by the eventual champions) and reach at least the top ten this season. They will need big seasons from their supposed top line tandem of J veterans Boogan McGillicutty and Zac Peters. Also important will be getting quality production from the second line featuring Toivo Jokinen and Swiffer Sweeper. Dakota Glover and Chinweike H.I. Valentine will try to keep up with their senior linemates on the right wing. On the blue line, Jean Bon and Wal Rus will be expected to shut down the opposing scorers while Chungledown Bim and Paul Missthenet look to provide more offensive input. Eric Sosa and Rondellus-Ringo Raamat will try to be responsible two-way defensemen. While the Scarecrows appear to have a whopping five goalies on their roster, the games will likely be split between Teemu järvinen and Andrew Drewski.

The preseason did not go according to plan in Carolina. Coming off a SMJHL championship there is talk in the clubhouse about going on a run to repeat as champs. The preseason showed that is going to be more difficult then perhaps we all thought. The second line as a whole including myself (Five Hole Goes West), @Zinny (Erkki Kaila), and @RLG91 (Ryan Dino-Nugget Hopkins) will need to improve our +/- as we combined for a -19 in the 7 games. In addition our goaltending as a whole will need to be better as the save percentage for both Kraken goalies was .871 and .870 respectively. On the positive side @JamesT (Kim Chaewon) knocked in 6 goals in 7 games and should be a force on line one, @Hetaksh (Hetaksh) and @ocho (Greyson Willis) also chipped in offensively as the top forward line produced 12 goals and 11 assists between them. While we certainly have things to work on, I do believe the Kraken will improve as the season progresses and should get into the playoffs. And once we're in.... look out!

Out here in Great Falls, fans are anxious to see the team find their grit again. After a dead-last finish, the rebuild is here and the offense is looking up. The first line for Great Falls is the tip of the spear, loaded for bear with Ishii, Breakaway and Deboonies. They should be more than capable of drawing their share of blood, it's the second line and beyond that must keep pace in order for the Grizzlies to ascend from the bottom half of the conference. The second line does have one forward with experience, Kelly McMahon at right wing is poised for a strong year if his line-mates can step up. At left wing, Troy Martone shows promise with a balanced attack and Chef Gagne the non-drafted waiver pickup slots in at center. While plainly green and rough around the edges, he has shown in the preseason to be a poised, heady player with a knack for distributing the puck. With a little experience and a lot of grit, this unit has a chance to make waves this season.

The Anchorage Armada will likely finish in the bottom third of the league. We have a very young team at the moment but we are building towards being a contender. I fully expect to see us grow as the season progresses and be prepared to come into next season as more of a threat. The goaltending position is solidified for the foreseeable future with Jonny leading the way and Osgood right behind him. I am expecting to see a big season from players like Patrick Rail or Aloysius Hoglor… both players are by far our most experienced. They could very well finish among the leagues best. Their role though should encouraging the development of our younger players who will be stepping up in a season or two to take over as the top dogs. These players include Luka Lilja, Ricki Kirby or anyone from the S83 draft class. The future looks bright in Anchorage but it won’t be without its hurdles.

Quebec City figured to come into S82 with mid expectations, having to run with a lot of rookies after seeing nine players called up to the SHL after S81. While we hoped that strong earning would put us on an upward trajectory over the season, building momentum for the playoffs, the preseason results have shown us that we may be better off than assumed. While always taking preseason results with a giant grain of salt, as all teams figure to shift lines and tactics, there were some really encouraging signs:
Shiny Rainbow - Our first line center, at capped 425, had their best preseason ever. It was their first preseason with more goals than assists, signalling a potential shift to scoring threat rather than setup man. Uwe Bindewald - Another capped 425, they'll hold down the first D pairing. Another massive TA/GA ratio of 10/3 combined with 10 blocks and 17 hits shows his ability as a shutdown defender. Lurtz Makoare - The rookie netminder made preseason Top 5 for wins, GAA, GSAA, and SV%. While never able to hold a shutout, his only loss came in the one game the Citadelles conceded more than 40 shots. If the D continues to hold opponents around 30 shots, Makoare looks able to keep them to 3 or fewer goals, which should be enough for QCC's offense to get the job done. ![]() Player Progression Director Posting Freak
Going into this next season, I think it will be important for Yukon to lean on some of their veteran players to lead the way. As one of the worst teams in the juniors last season, Yukon had to bring in an influx of youth which they did with their high draft spot, but it will take time for those players to develop and become assets for the team. As such Yukon will have to look at players like Océane Söderberg-Tremblay who led the team in blocks and takeaways last season. Like Hamilton Steelhawk who is the highest points scorer left on the roster and was top 5 in almost every other stat that matters on the team Like Peyton McLazy who was an incredible defensive forward, putting up crazy hits and blocks numbers for his role. These players can't just repeat their performances, they'll need to improve on them if they want to help these rookies go far in the season.

Quebec City looks quite positively ahead of the season start, only having lost one of the pre-season games. Based on that it should definitely be a possiblity that Quebec is able to finish towards the top four of the league. While there weren’t any big solo overperformers, the team overall seems to work just fine together. Although a few standout statistics were to be seen in pre-season. As such I would say that three players that are most likely going to make the biggest difference for the Citadelles this season are: Uwe Bindewald, who has already proven in pre-season to be a positive influence on the ice having been the #1 Plus Minus player, sitting at +15 from seven played games. Another big influence would most likely be Lewis Holl, having been a top 3 defender in terms of points scored. They will be a main strength in that defense line of the QCC, while up front the goals are split quite evenly across Shiny Rainbow, Sethastierikko Goslavechnaaliemiooketkov and Greg Evil who have scored seven, six and six goals respectively. Those three will try to be the driving force of Quebec’s goal scoring attempts and if it continues like in pre-season, at least two of them will most likely end up in the top 10 over the course of the whole season.

I think that the pre-season doesn't exactly give you a ton of great info because many teams are just doing wonky shit so the wins and losses are all sorts of chaotic. Generally I think the first couple sims of the regular season are much more informative, everyone is getting serious and locking in. With that said, I think for the Timber every season the goal is to lift the cup. We'll get there, I hope.
Some players to look out for: Lucas Lindberg: Lucas is entering his first 425 season, and graduating into one of the top spots on the team. Evolving from a somewhat one dimensional offense-first forward, Lucas has built towards a much more well-rounded, two way type of build. Hopefully this lets him pick up even more minutes, and be a leader on both the PP and PK. Apollo Seaborne: Essentially the same thing I just said for Lucas, but in reverse. Apollo has added some physical traits and worked on his offensive game this off season, and hopefully that serves him well as he'll now (likely) be starring on the PP in that quarterback slot. Scott Fortune: Scott is expected to be our top center, and that's an ever-important role. Hopefully he can pick up right where he left off last season and keep winning important battles in the dot to keep our offense humming.

The St. Louis Scarecrows are looking to build off their run to the conference finals last season. Drafting promising rookies and looking to get improved play from the players they've brought back. @Ferwx is expected to be a huge factor on defense for the Scarecrows. The best defenseman on the team is going to need to bring it every night in order for the Scarecrows to be successful. Offensively, the Scarecrows are looking for big seasons out of @PandaMan and @Jimbo1990. This pair of wingers is looking to do big things and their contribution is going to be welcomed. Second year player @Toaster is also looking to up their game. St. Louis was a team with seven rookies last season and @Toaster is just one looking to take the next step in their development. If these players take the next step in their SMJHL development the Scarecrows will be in position to make a deep playoff run again this year.

Detroits future is looking positive. Our preseason went overall decent. We came out starting fast with our offense, scoring 21 goals in our first 3 games. We finished the pre-season at 4-3 but things look good and we have a great roster of players/people. Key players to our team success overall, to name a few ;
Matt Smith- They're our #1 Center and will be a driving force for our offense. Had a very strong pre-season with 7 goals and 8 assists for 15 points in the 7 games. With a rating of +7 so no doubt, will be a key player in driving plays and creating opportunities. They led our team for shots in the preseason, with 33 and a shooting % of 24.2%. He will be a great player for the rookies to watch. At 350 but will only improve and go up and become more of a problem for other teams to deal with. Quazon Brosonchi- One of our best, entering with 424 this season. A very high skill forward who will be a great mentor/player for the rookies to learn from. They had a strong pre-season, 6 goals and 8 assists for 14 points in 7 games. +8 rating, so another key player who drives offense while giving the opponent minimal chances. A 24% shooting, with 25 shots, good for 3rd on the team. With 30 hits they are a physical presence. Thurston Bull- Similar to Matt Smith, at 349 they are entering their 2nd season with Detroit. Pre-season was good, totaling 10 points, 2 goals and 8 assists. Should be a great season for them. Things are positive and trending upward and will only get better. They will be another driving force for our team this year. As a whole, Detroit, i believe will surprise some people this year. After getting to know my team, along with the other rookies who were drafted along with me, we are all very excited and active, and eager to show everyone what we, and Detroit got!
