Written Option 2

The SHL has always been open to implementing different ideas into the league, but the big question mark here happens to be injuries. It is very easy to say “Let’s include injuries in the sim” until someone pops up with a season ending injury, then what for that person? I like the idea of very low amounts of injuries, as it can bring an opportunity to calling up SMJHL players or having to sign an extra Free Agent or 2 to make up your entire roster (players that would likely be inactives). It is a decent idea, but honestly the SHL is as good the way it is. All the actives get this opportunity to play fully on their team and are able to root for their player over sitting around and looking pretty for potentially a long time. If it aint broke then theres no need to fix it, and thats how I would go with the idea of injuries

Players can be as aggressive as they want BECAUSE there are no injuries -- I've always assumed people didn't go aggression/fighting because there was no real morale-related benefit. The primary cause for Violet's injury, of course, would be her team's co-GM, @micool132 , edited the code and wanted an excuse to trade Violet away from Atlanta without making a huge deal about it. If she has an injury, well, she's a pariah and there's no reason to keep someone who's unreliable in a league where the entirety of the rest of the professional hockey world is reliable. Nobody knows about micool's dastardly plans, however, and the finger-pointing begins: of COURSE it was one of Tampa Bay's defenders being reckless. Maybe one of them has a weapon and just didn't get caught by security because they're a wealthy, skilled player. I mean, the defender had a spiked bat! Where in the WORLD did they hide it, both outside and on the ice? Violet got Tonya Harding'd, and of course Mia Lavoie goes to bat for her.

She becomes a spectacle and micool eventually trading her becomes a reviled, but (managerially) understood decision within the SHL. I'm in shambles, obviously.

Written Option 2: It’s well known that adding injuries to the SHL would be a very controversial addition. Controversy aside, how do you think the SHL could incorporate injuries as part of the sim? Would teams need to have extra SHL calibur players as injury reserves? Would they call up J players? Would the team have injury-only bot players that could be deployed if a player got injured? Would you be for or against player injuries for the sake of realism? Or do you prefer the fact that each player could give the NHL Iron Man record a challenge simply by existing?

I love this question. I think injury should absolutely exist in the SHL. The caveat has to be that there’s no career ending injuries or injuries that last longer than a couple Sims, which would be 10 to 15 games max on an injury. I think it just adds a sense of realism that is seriously missing from the league. And having a player dinged up for a game or two would definitely make it more realistic. As far as who would come into fill a void, I would fully endorse it being a junior player and giving that player a chance to have a taste of the pro league if only for a summer or two. Now the problem There is presented for the SMJHL. They would then need to have the bought players to be able to fill in for a player who is called up temporarily. It’s a lot easier to have a bot player who only has 350 TPE instead of a bot player who has 1000 TP filling in at the SHL level. I think this is a fantastic idea and something that definitely needs to be explored.

I doubt there is a way to implement injuries that does not piss off at least a considerable margin of people. The whole experience we usually get with a player, growing it and whatnot, can be already pretty troublesome as it is without throwing that additional wrench to things. I can understand the interest because it would certainly be a bit unique if you are thinking outside of the box and all but it kind of resembles someone having terrible luck with dice on Dungeons and Dragons, I doubt most folks would not just throw everything up and call it a day from the annoyance.

Personally, I would find it very annoying since it would be something else to take under consideration in the off-chance there even was a way to work against it (like a resistance stat that drops throughout the seasons or something) and the experience of losing a player because of that would be a bit troublesome to say the least.

I think this could be difficult to implement, as we usually sim a lot of games per day. Long-term injuries might become boring for some and could affect motivation. But let’s play the game and introduce something else. With the controversial addition of injuries in the SHL comes a second controversial idea: the creation of an SHL farm team system.

There’s a limit to expansion. To keep 800-TPE players active without putting additional pressure on the SHL and the SMJHL, we could create a farm system within the league. That way, there would be no need for bots. We could promote players from farm teams to the big leagues. Waivers could also be part of it, helping younger or rebuilding teams.

It could soften the jump for rookies, giving them a place to develop after the SMJHL while still having an impact. I know, it sounds like a terrible idea, just like the injuries, but maybe it’s one that could help solve the implementation challenge an injury system would have.

Written option 2: A lot of work would have to be done in order to add injuries to the SHL, none of it really that fun or interesting. The first problem is what to do once a team has an injured player. A standard template, like the goalie given to teams when no goalies are left in the WJC presents the most fair way to address the issue, whereas increasing the player money cap thing GMs have to work with would allow them to roster backup players. But no one wants to be told that they are the backup for the real players, that is just demoralizing. As for how builds would be affected, we might see an uptick in goons and enforcers, after all taking out opposing teams players would become a much more legitimate strategy. With all this being said I think it would be a terrible idea to implement injuries, it is realistic sure, but realistic is not always fun, and we are supposed to be having fun here.

The clock ticked down with seconds left in the third. The Vancouver Whalers lead by a goal and were locked in a gritty battle against the Nevada Battleborn. The crowd was electric. Joe Primeau, always the calm playmaker under pressure, corralled the puck in his own zone after a failed Nevada dump-and-chase. He spun off a forechecker with a slick pivot, having shot the puck at the empty abandoned by Claude L'Castor in profit of a sixth forward. There was no icing, he went for the puck with speed. His eyes on the prize.

Then—

Just as he crossed behind the net, getting the puck trying a wrap around, Drew McIntyre, known more for brute force than clean technique, came barreling in from the blind side. No attempt at the puck. No slowing down. Just pure shoulder-to-head contact, colliding with Joe like a freight train. The arena fell silent. Joe didn’t get up. Before the refs could even raise their arms, Cole Slaw was already flying off the bench. The hit had come a few strides too late, and Cole—known as one of the most feared checkers in the league—had seen enough. He dropped his gloves mid-stride and leveled the Nevada forward with a punishing takedown. A small melee broke out, with other Whalers jumping in to back up their fallen teammate.

But it wasn’t about the fight anymore. All eyes turned back to Joe… still motionless.

(And now, for a bit of fantasy.)

The SHL had prided itself on its revolutionary nanofiber impact suits—state-of-the-art tech that redistributed force and prevented serious injuries, a marvel that made career-ending incidents a thing of the past. But Joe’s suit… had failed. After months of quiet complaints about discomfort and fit, Joe’s gear had been flagged for replacement—but the upgrade had been delayed due to a supply chain issue. A critical failure in the suit’s neural shock absorber meant that when the hit came in, the kinetic force wasn’t diffused. It was absorbed. Completely. The impact fractured his orbital bone, gave him a concussion, and—most disturbingly—triggered a neurological shock. It was the first time since the league’s founding that a player had to be stretchered off the ice.

Streaking into the zone on the rush. Linesperson calls it just onside. Puck gets dumped around the boards by my teammate. It slows up in the corner and trickles behind the net. I shift to the right of the goal and extend my stick to bat the puck out. Then suddenly there is a shoulder into my chest and I am knocked backward onto the ice. It all goes black for a second. Everything is muffled and the overhead lights are blinding as I come to. I see vague shapes of brown and white and hear the tapping of the crowd against the glass. Whistles are blowing all around. I'm drug away by someone as a clear scuffle is happening around me. It might have been a dirty hit. I'm not a hundred percent sure what happened. The trainer comes out and starts asking me questions before being slowly sat up in the corner. I see now that it basically turned into a line brawl with players from both sides grappling each other. Finally feeling stable, I am helped off the ice and down the tunnel with the home crowd cheering. (191)

2.

I think injuries should definitely be added. We're starting over on a new game engine, it's the perfect time to change up the rules and the meta game. Down with everyone using the same dumb strats, you add injuries in the game? You better watch out for your star players because my team's goons are going for them. You're going against your rival? Swap a line into goons to injure their top players for the rest of the season. There is so much possibility. You just have to be careful because this could definitely unravel into a goon league where every team wants to hurt everyone else. I think calling up SMJHL players up to the SHL in case of injuries is a good idea, especially for your opponents in the playoffs. Going up against a 450 TPE capped player on the dot would be pretty satisfying for sure. Just don't lose the faceoff or your teammates will ridicule you forever.

Bringing injuries into the SHL would add a touch of realism, but could also lead to some worries. Teams might need to set up injury reserves, bring in J-Players, or even use special bot players just for injuries to temporarily cover for missing players. This would mean teams must build a deeper roster and tweak their game plans, making team management more complicated. Plus, players could undergo training to lower their chances of getting hurt or to recover faster.

On the flip side, there are some drawbacks. Injuries can throw a wrench in the long-term growth of players, particularly for those aiming for Iron Man records. The fact that players usually stay healthy makes the SHL so appealing. Introducing injuries might lead to severe frustration, especially if essential players get benched at crucial times, which could unfairly benefit teams with more depth.

I'd rather keep the SHL free from injuries, but maybe having an optional injury system could be a decent middle ground. This way, players can pick how realistic they want their experience to be while keeping the current vibe intact.

I think the idea that you need to be able to call up players in order to complete your roster makes total sense. In my opinion, injuries are not permanent but do reduce stamina for a certain amount of games depending on the injury. This would be extremely powerful in playoffs because reducing the stamina of a high powered forward would have huge consequences for the team. This would make it just a little closer to a sense of realism where a team can't just steamroll and would give us back a little bit of sths luck. Top it off that a double injury would play into missing a game in the following sim. So do you play your injured player knowing that they have a chance to get injured again and lose them for a while game, or do you rest that player during game 3 so that you can bring them back game 4? We add just a little bit l and it could go a long way. Maybe it gives player agency. I don't want to be played while injured. Or maybe a team forces a player to play and that caused them to get injured causing a riff between player and team. We need more controversy.

This season, Viktor has quite literally spent more time in the penalty box than anyone else in the league, so it's not terribly surprising that that might catch up to him sooner rather than later. While Vik appears to be working through the grief of losing half of his teammates by smacking his opponents around like hockey pucks, his victims have been waiting patiently for their chance to strike back. And strike back they do, if it ends up resulting in the SHL's first ever injury. In this scenario, Hargreeves is likely busying himself with carrying the puck all the way from the defensive zone to the opposing goalie, as he is wont to do these days. Seeing that he's all alone, the opposition would be insane not take the opportunity to smear him across the boards as he's boxed out and away from the net. The ensuing pile-up from players on both teams trying to either rescue Viktor or send him into early retirement is what would result in the injury itself. Whether it's broken bones or torn ligaments, all Viktor will be doing is sighing dramatically and wishing everyone would come back.
