S82 PT #4: Hero Hockey League Due: Sunday, May 18th @ 11:59 PM PST

Alexandros Mograine is the number one hero for the Chicago Syndicate. I mean, he is legitimately a hero of whatever lore filled World of Warcraft universe that he’s from. And he’s a hero in Chicago in every single way. He’s been our leader on the ice for the last 10 seasons. He’s been the leader of our management office, he’s a leader in our locker room. And I’m sure that he’s even a hero in his local community. How can he not be a hero when every night he trades in his large, scary, sharp sword for a small little hockey stick and somehow turns into a quick and agile little goal scorer. Mograine has always put the team and the league before himself and that makes him a hero to me. He belongs in Chicago and will carry his heroism for the rest of his simulation hockey career. A hero in everyone’s eyes, no doubt about it.

In an alternate world, Grindle becomes The Grindex, a hockey-themed superhero who skates where others fear to stand. Armed with a morphing Stick of Justice and the ability to unleash slapshot shockwaves that shatter walls, he defends the SHL from chaos. His Power Play Mode makes him untouchable for two minutes, while his Chirp Sense detects fear and deception with every razor-sharp insult. But no hero’s story is complete without a rival. Enter Penalty Phantom, a ghostlike enforcer from the rival Hamilton Steelhawks (gross), who turns invisible during 5-on-4s and wields a cursed stick that causes opponents to trip over their own skates. In Game 7 of the Finals, Phantom strikes mid-breakaway, but Grindex senses him. “No cheap calls today, ghost boy,” he growls. Power Play Mode activates. He rockets past defenders, lands a slapshot that shatters Phantom’s invisibility, and buries the puck. The fans erupt. Villain vanquished. Justice? Scored.

My super hero name would be the wrister! I have an old school Easton metal stick, so it won’t break, and I shit pucks and shoot them at evil doers in my neighborhood. I would probably stick to my street because I am lazy. But no one would be snatching purses on my block. Unless they wanted to get hit between the eyes with a shitty wrister! My main enemies would be pompous dog walkers that don’t pick up their dog poop and litter bugs. And meter maids would hate me because I’d put change in people’s meters. Hero of the people I tell yah. A champ of the streets kind of guy. My neighbors would love me. My enemies would find me a mild annoyance . And I would probably still hate myself in the morning. Wouldn’t need the neighborhood watch anymore. With crime on the rise in this crazy world we live in, who is going to help the little guys on this one particular street? The wrister. That’s who.

Written 1:

Jett Labyrinth’s superhero name would be Fighter Jett, he’ll embody some of the characteristics of a fighter jet, such as ability to fly (on the ice), and the ability to shoot pucks from built-in cannons in his equipment. When he’s in peak fighter mode he also has the ability of super strength and can take on any opponent in an on-ice fight, as his name would suggest. His main supervillain archrival is The Mighty Spectre of New Orleans. The Spectre has ghost-like abilities like being able to turn invisible on the ice and being able to scare opponents on the other team. With the division on the line, The Fighter Jett and The Mighty Spectre had a chance to go head to head and LAY IT ON THE LINE. Fighter Jett began by flying all over the ice around The Spectre, but eventually The Spectre turned invisible and popped up right in front of Jett as he was about to fire it into the net, scaring him. In anger, Jett turned into peak fighter mode and challenged The Spectre to a fight, but The Spectre turned invisible again and a fighting major was called only for Jett. This penalty eventually led to a game-winning powerplay goal scored by The Might Spectre.

There's only one person in the Montreal Patriotes organization who could be called a hero and that's the coach. And that's not me saying that at gunpoint. He's the most important person on the bench at all times, he's there for us and wants us to succeed. He pushes us to give it 110% and it shows on the ice. Well it didn't really show in the beginning of the season, and in some way that's a double edged sword because he tried to implement new strategies but it failed miserably. We then fell back to our trusted strategies that every single other team employ and you could tell the difference, now we're a team fighting for the Challenge Cup and it's all because of him. We're all better because we've got him and I hope he sticks around for years to come. If I could just remember his name though...

Written option 1: I feel like a hockey themed superhero would have a hard time standing out aside from their little gimmick, as long as they were a forward or defenseman, that is. A goalie on the other hand would be an interesting take, they even have the mask to protect their secret identity. As for what power they could have, the power to stop any projectile completely comes to mind, no caveats, just brings the projectile to a complete stop with no harm to themselves. Bullets? No problem. Energy blasts or lasers? Easy peezy. Goku's spirit bomb? Hey it is a projectile, and that counts. No projectile can get past "The Goalie". Funnily enough, having a goalie superhero kind of works with how we "rate" goalies to begin with, their save percentage, except instead of goals it is people now. The power also fits what a superhero is supposed to be, someone who protects the innocent.

I don't know why there needs to be a alternate reality, because Victor Bjork-Pejlikka is already a superhero! His nickname off-ice is "THE SHOWSTOPPER." his superpowers are enhanced flexibility; he is able to make those impossible saves, whether its stopping a breakaway, or dodging bullets, he can do them all, with the entertainment element. all spectators fall over each other in awe of his amazingness Smile He also possesses inhuman awareness, kind of like a spidy-sense, although he calls it the saving-sense. He can do it all from reading opponents shots or knowing when danger is about to strike! his final and arguably most deadly ability he dubs "the hidden puck." on ice, he hides pucks in his equipment to baffle the refs and make sure a questionable goal really isn't a goal at all! where is the puck? victor knows its under his pad, which is in the net, but nobody else does! suddenly, there is a puck in his glove! he saved it all along! off ice, the pucks appear from nowhere, and he uses them to stun his rivals. THE SHOWSTOPPER doesn't have any arch-nemeses' because they all cower with fear when facing him.

If Ongo Gablogian was a super hero, his super hero name would be something like “Obese Man” or something along those lines. Something about being fat. His super power would be making food disappear, particularly Taco Bell, since they sponsor him and require they be mentioned in every point task. Maybe he would be “The Taco Bell™ Devourer Supreme Brought To You By The New Chicken Cantina Menu”. His biggest rival hero or villain I guess you could say would be playing actual good hockey. As he finishes at the bottom of the scoring sheet on his team for yet another season, it literally is already his villain, he is just nowhere close to being an actual real super hero. Basically the villain (being good at hockey), would show up and he would cower in the corner. Or he would show up in his super hero outfit and he would trip and fall through a table and his spandex suit would split down the ass crack.

Off the ice, being a hero takes on a very different meaning than being a hero on the ice. It's not about who's the most skilled, or who has the most experience, or even who is the most clutch player. What it comes down to is who is there for their teammates. Who can be trusted, who can be leaned on, not just when it comes to the game, but when it comes to everything, "real life" things. Captains are often chosen by their teammates, not by management, and it is for good reason. Captains are meant to be trusted leaders, example setters, tone setters. While Journey Man tries his best to be a role model for the locker rooms he's in, he never expects to get a captain's letter, because he knows he won't be around to provide that support. He holds a lot of respect for the captain's of each team he plays for, and relies on them for a lot of the off-ice management that goes along with being in a new city.

The textbook definition of "hero" is "a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities." Using this definition, a hero on the ice can be just about anyone. An on-ice hero is someone who fearlessly plays the game, putting their team's goals above their own, and that often can lead a player to achieving more of their own goals than they might think. A hero off the ice is much harder to find, as private lives are, by definition, private and away from prying eyes. To me, for a player to be a hero off the ice, they must be courageous or noble. Think of players volunteering their time, visiting sick children or participating in an event to raise awareness about a certain topic or group. Being able to stick up for a teammate or help them in a time of crisis is another quality that helps to make a player a real hero.

I think Silver qualifies as an on-ice hero for Thunder Bay, notching goals and creating assists for his teammates, but I don't think he is at an appropriate level to be called an off-ice hero. There's still things he has to do off the ice to reach said level, and those opportunities will present themselves as his career progresses. I do think there are off-ice heroes in Thunder Bay, names like Kristaps Skalbergs or Pasta the Turtle II come to mind.

Option 1
Kristian Seppanen, the star right defenceman and alternate captain of the Atlanta Inferno ice hockey team of the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference of the Simulation Hockey League, otherwise sometimes referred to as the SHL, has many super powers. There are infinite universes, so in any of the various alternative universes Kristian Seppanen can do anything - from x-ray vision to seeing the future to being a shot blocking magnet. Ultimately, being shot blocking magnet is the dream super power for Kristian Seppanen, as he likes to block shots and demonstrate his defensive prowess, which he believes leads to his offensive skills too. Kristian Seppanen would also enjoy the skills of super speed, flying, or predicting the future but at the end of the day those seem a little less practical as Seppanen’s team mates at every position, including goalie, defence men, and forwards, would need to adapt to those skills specifically for Seppanen - from passing faster or further ahead to getting the puck in the air for Seppanen to make use of the flying.

Written Option 2

Being a hero is something that Lyle Odelein IV knows a little about. Not necessarily because anyone considers him a hero, it is due to him growing up around his father, Lyle Odelein III while living in New Orleans. The elder Odelein helped the Specters win their one and only Challenge Cup and went on to captain the Specters for several seasons. He was a hero to many in New Orleans and still is today. The younger Lyle is doing everything he can to help provide the same impact on and off the ice as his father but he is not his only role model. The previous NOLA Caspian, Luca Pane has the same qualities as the former captain as does Scar Bradley, the recently named Specters captain. Both of these players embody everything that makes a hero, a hero. With teammates and mentors like these, maybe Lyle Odelein IV will get to the hero level one day, but only time will tell.

In my sincere opinion, there are many different types of heros that can appear within a team. There are the heroes that just do the biggest heavy lifting around, putting the team in their back by sheer means of effort and will. There are the heroes that will always turn up in the clutch. They may not be the biggest point getter, but when its the last minute and youe team needs one to either tie or win, call this guy's number and he'll always pull magic out of the hat.

Then there is the leader hero. The captain of the ship, willing yoi and the teammates through hell and high water. Its as if by instinct that you are compelled to follow him into battle, to fight for him, to champion his very actions. And you'll do it witb conviction due to how much of a hero he is to everyone within the locker room.

That leader to me is Toivo Jokinen.
St Louis Captain, our very own hero.
