The Race For The Jeff Dar Trophy - S12 Edition
Welcome to this years edition of "The Race For The Jeff Dar Trophy" where we try to determine the league's best Two-Way-Forward ! It will be a shorter article this time around but i hope you still enjoy as we tried something different this year - the newest edition of our Ranking will consist of two parts, one written be me using a formular that I've created and one written by grim using a different formula invented by him. I hope this will make for some interesting discussion . A few words about my method... It’s pretty much the same as last season and you can find some more info on it in the last edition of our article (You can find it >Here<). Basically I have been using the following Formula: ((Hits/1.64)+(Shots Blocked/0.18*0.75)+(Goals/0.24*0.8)+(Assists/0.37*0.6))/(Minutes Played/100) Here is how it works: The Stats a player has in an individual category are taken and divided by the highest value reached in this category divided by 100. For example, the highest number of Hits anyone had was 164 (compared to 205 last year with the other engine), so the Hit-totals for all players were divided by 1,64. The player who had the 164 Hits reached a score of 164/1,64=100, so the highest score someone could get was 100. A player with 140 Hits got a score of 140/1,64= 85,37 and so on. This was done for four different categories, Hits, Shots Blocked, Goals and Assists (Takeaways couldn’t be included anymore because the new engine doesn’t count them). After that, the categories were weighted. Hits were weighted with 1, so there was no change there, Blocks were weighted with 0,75, so the results there were multiplied with 0,75, Goals were weighted with 0,8 and Assists with 0,6. All those individual scores were then added up and divided by the Minutes Played by a player/100. So for someone who had played 1050 minutes, the score was divided by 1050/100=10,5. I know that including minutes played might be somewhat controversial as one might argue that having a lot of playing time means a team trusts you and you have a player who can handle this ice-time, which is a good thing. And while I agree with that, I noticed some pretty big differences in minutes played while researching for my list, so I felt like this factor should be included so that players who play on teams who rely on their depth don’t have a disadvantage compared to players on one-line teams. By the way I noticed something during my research that i thought was pretty interesting: The sim-change hasn’t just led to lower scoring numbers, but to lower totals in all other categories as well. The highest number of Hits dropped from 205 to 165 and the highest number of Shot Blocks from 31 to 18. As a result the total scores of the players have taken a big hit as well, last year we had two players with a score over 30 and seven players with a score between 25 and 30, this season nobody even got over 25. The Winner from this season would’ve only ranked 13th last year! But enough about my method and the differences compared to last season, let’s get to the ranking.... Here it is ! Dar-Trophy Ranking S12 using TWS (100/W) 1. Reggie Williams - 24,45 2. Smirnov Light - 22,93 3. Kain Webb - 22,45 4. Jordan Nugent-Hall - 20,83 5. Christoph Klose - 20,50 6. David Winter - 20,44 7. Brendan Gibbon - 19,68 8. Brodie Witzel - 18,53 9. Jordan Hall - 18,41 10. Laraque Obama - 18,29 11. Frankie Gooseneck - 18,00 12. Thomas Duddy - 17,67 13. Benjamin Wong - 17,02 14. Elias Armia - 16,50 15. Jackson Spruill - 16,44 The following players had good numbers as well but were not included because they didn’t play on the Penalty-Kill for their team (or only a little bit), something that we consider a necessity for a supreme Two-Way Forward. I wanted to still give them a mention though so here they are, with the ranking they would’ve had and their scores in parenthesis) Charlie Chiclets (3. 22,54) Brandon Donini (5. 21,44) Nick Fisher (13. 18,18) Grigori Pajari (16. 17,47) And here is my analysis of the ranking: The clear-cut favorite for the Dar-trophy this season is Reggie Williams. He combines high numbers in almost every category with a relatively low amount of playing time compared to some of his peers. His offensive output and hit totals are among the best, only his shots blocked are just average. Following him, but already with quite a gap between them and Williams, are the other two players that I would nominate, Smirnov Light and Kain Webb. Both put up great offensive numbers with relatively weak linemates and finished 1st and 2nd in league scoring while also putting up very solid defensive numbers. Next up is a group of three guys who could get nominations as well, but are a bit behind Light and Webb in my opinion: Jordan Nugent-Hall, Christoph Klose and David Winter. Nugent-Hall has the best offensive numbers of the three while Klose was along the league leaders in shots blocked and Winter had the best all-around stats, as he was above-average in all categories but not elite in any one of them. They are followed by Brendan Gibbon who was very good in terms of Assists and Hits while the group of Brodie Witzel (good Hitting and goalscoring), Jordan Hall (one of the better Shot Blockers) and Laraque Obama (average in most categories but did so with the lowest playing time of all players mentioned so far) round out the top-ten. The rest of the ranking consists of Frankie Gooseneck (good Hitting and Shot-Blocking), Thomas Duddy (Scoring + decent Hitting), Benjamin Wong (lots of Blocked Shots), Elias Armia (Great Scoring and decent Hitting) and the only Rookie in this list, Jackson Spruill (decent Scoring and lots of Shot Blocks). That’s it for my ranking, sorry that it isn’t as detailed as in previous seasons but I was in a bit of a rush this time, I hope you still enjoyed it . Stay tuned for Part II of the article where Grim will present his Ranking, which should follow later tonight!

Great read, even I don´t like the big influence of the offensive stats like goals/assist for a defensive award. +/- would be better imo.

I'm not really a fan of including +/- though, it's just too much of a team-stat. But it wouldn't have made much of a difference anyway, as almost everyone who was high in this ranking was between +10 and +20.

Or else it owuld be just "best Defensive Forward" not "Best Two-Way Forward" - -
